Would not come back
The food was either unseasoned or inedible. My friend and I lived off bread and fruit for several days and got food outside of an all inclusive resort we paid for. Disappointed.

Decent budget hotel
If you are looking for a budget hotel this is the place for you. The food is not great. There is only one main bar. Entertainment is lacking. We would not have stayed here except for the fact that the couple we were with had never been to Mexico and this is what they could afford. The only saving grace was the view from our balcony. The staff is absolutely wonderful.

Amazing beach, great stuff. You pay $20 a day for umbrella on the beach. Check in process very long
Overall, my stay at Occidental Tucancún was average, with some very strong positives and a few frustrating issues that really need improvement. The biggest downside was the check-in process. It was extremely slow and disorganized. First, you wait in one long line just to check in, and then you’re sent to another long line to get your room assigned. Both waits combined were almost an hour, even though we arrived after the 3:00 pm check-in time. This system really needs to be changed, as it creates a very poor first impression. On the positive side, the beach was absolutely amazing, and the pool area was also excellent—definitely the highlights of the resort. The staff and crew were outstanding, some of the best service I’ve experienced. Bar service and restaurants were very good, and the seafood restaurant in particular was excellent, with very tasty food. The drinks were average, nothing special. The buffet had a good selection, but it was mostly the same food every day, which gets repetitive after a few days. A major disappointment was the extra charge for beach umbrellas. Having to pay $20 per day for an umbrella at an all-inclusive resort is unacceptable. I ended up spending about $100 extra, and this is something that should absolutely be included. I’ve never experienced this at any other all-inclusive resort. In summary, the resort has a fantastic location, great beach, and excellent staff, but the slow check-in process and extra charges take away from the overall experience. With some improvements, this place could be much better.

January escape to paradise
The resort is indeed a bit dated but the price was right. After spending a few days watching the ocean from the pool we decided we will return despite not being the level of luxury we are accustomed to. Our priorities are pool, ocean and staff so we were more than happy in the end. Food was average for a resort but it was plentiful and having the snack areas in the premium lounge and bar was very handy.
