The experience was average, what made it great was the staff, very kind and accommodating. The rest especially the food was not to my taste since I am vegetarian and not many options were available for me.

Never again.
Where do I begin… The room was barely cleaned prior to checking in. AC did not work for 2 days. Technician came out 3 times. Eventually got it to work. Toilet would not flush unless you flushed 4 times. Shower would fill up with water and soap/dirt scum would accumulate. Cleaning ladies barely cleaned the tub. The food was EXACTLY the same for breakfast, lunch and dinner for an entire week. Thank goodness for their pizza place. It was edible if you were willing to wait the 45 minutes While some staff were helpful and pleasant…the majority were not. Constantly giving the stink eye or talking about you - not knowing I spoke Spanish. Some staff would go out of their way to help…and for those I tipped well, despite being all inclusive. But wait, there’s more… We had no dead bolt on our door. The knob was there, but no actual bolt. Which brings me to the most disturbing part of this hotel experience…my family and I were woken up at 4am by two men entering our room. They had a card key. I jolted out of bed, grabbed one and threw him out the door into the other guy who was in the doorway. I screamed and raised my fist in preparation to fight. Screaming the entire time to get out and go! They ran. My wife and son were freaked out. Called security. They took 10 minutes to show up. We went to the lobby where the night manager blew us off while helping people check out. During that time, the two boys came into the lobby with another male and female friend. Security was nearby. The boys were terrified and explained that they were looking for a friend who went out to the beach and had not returned. They asked the front desk for his room key - but got the room numbers mixed up. The night manager gave them a key - to OUR room - without asking for any ID or escort to the room. While we’re were happy to know it was a mistake on the boys end, we’re were scared and angry at the hotels lack of accountability. Given all the crap we endured…and then this…I asked for a full refund. They offered a $50 credit to their market for the inconvenience. The daytime manger was apologetic but said this is all he could do. There is NO WAY I would recommend this resort to anyone. I will be calling AMEX to file a complaint and ask for a refund. Ps. We were with 12 families for a soccer cup. They ALL had similar room issues and experiences with staff, cleanliness and food.

Avoid Occidental Caribe
This was my fourth visit to DR; second visit to Punta Cana, first time at this resort chain. This is my review in no particular order as I’m just typing off the top of my memory. I have been home for 2 days now. Pros: Immaculate grounds, pools and beach. Comfortable lounge chairs; always able to find a lounge chair at the beach or pool. Room 3427 had an amazing ocean view with a balcony and was a bit updated. The bed and pillows were comfortable. We had an amazing dinner at the Tokyo. Marenostrum was just okay; we sat facing the party pool, there were teenagers making out and smoking marijuana the whole duration of our meal. The poolside snack bar was really good as long as the items were stocked. We never tried the fried chicken b/c every time that we went, there were just crusty bones in the dish. We really enjoyed Pizzeria Don Simon and the view is great. We loved and took photos (on our phone) with Paco the monkey. She said it would be $10, but ended up charging us $50 cash. They were cute photos so we didn’t mind. Cons: Check In: We checked in at 11am 6/13 with no problem. We came back to reception at 3pm to obtain our room keys. Waited in “line” for 45 minutes, the line was a mess, people cut in line, there were only two receptionist working and they could not tell who was next. This was a complete and utter mess. At this time of day, a staff member should be directing people. We received the room keys for room 3407 (we paid for an ocean view), we received a dirty (it appeared that there were bloodstains on the ceiling and bedside lampshade), I was speechless when I saw the moldy bathroom, outdated room over looking trees and the party pool. It was so unbelievably LOUD we requested a quieter room with the paid for ocean view and received an acceptable room-3427. At check in we also noticed people receiving a welcome drink, we never received one. While in new room 3427: Balcony door was tough to open and close…needed WD40 The shower head water had no pressure no matter what time of day that we showered. No vent or fan in the bathroom; the bathroom fogs up really quickly. The pool towels are stain, thinned out and shabby. If you want a dry towel after 2pm, forget it. The worker will laugh and say, “all out” then continue chatting with another coworker. The morning of 6/14 (morning after our arrival) I went down at 6:45am to make reservations -if you’re not down there early (Guest Services opens at 7am), be ready to wait in a line that goes all the way out to the pool area. I made 3 dinner reservations as we were staying 6 nights. Unfortunately I got an upset stomach one afternoon and had to cancel that night’s reservation. I went down the next morning at 7am to rebook a dinner reservation-I was not picky as to what restaurant or what time; the guest service staff member said no and that we forfeited a reservation by cancelling due to me being ill. Our last night 6/18 around 8pm I wanted to treat myself to a mudslide drink (I’m not much of a drinker and didn’t try any desserts); I saw many people drinking mudslides and I wanted to give it a try. The female bartender at the lobby bar said no b/c she just made a strawberry daiquiri and did not want to clean the blender. We ended up going upstairs and to bed and thankfully, we left the next morning 6/19. I believe in tipping for staff who go above and beyond. No one stood out at this resort. Compared to other resorts, the staff members at Occidental Caribe seem extremely miserable, irritated when approached, and they love to say, “no ingles” and then laugh afterwards. Other guests on the resort noticed this as well. It’s very disheartening. Therefore, we only ended up tipping the bellhop, Amstar drivers, housekeeper and Elvis for helping us when the Amstar representative was a no show on our first morning-Hector the Amstar rep was supposed to meet us at 9:30am (I still have the written instructions that we received at the airport). Elvis called Amstar from his cell phone so we could set up our departure details. I always go through Amstar and their service this time was very disappointing and coordinating over the phone was difficult due to the language barrier. The buffet was absolutely awful-this resort should focus on quality, not quantity. There were no description signs next to any of the dishes or dressings-I think this is a huge problem for people with food allergies. I have a tree nut allergy so I know enough to stay away from particularly the breads and desserts. The hot dishes were never warm. No cream cheese for the bagels that they offered at the buffet. The sauces at the pasta stations were thin/watered down and again, no description signs. The omelet station had the same toppings every morning. This resort only offers 4-5 toppings. I’ve been to resorts that easily offer 10-15 toppings every morning. Bacon was not offered as a meat for breakfast; only 2-3 types of differently prepared sausage. We stayed at the “quiet” pool for our stay, but inconsiderate guests bring their own speakers so there was always noise and the music was basically fighting over one another. The website advertises hammocks, there weren’t any. The website also advertises a quiet/adult pool, but there were kids EVERYWHERE. Staff members did not enforce anything. The website makes the resort sound better than what it is and that’s a shame. I understand that this is a family resort, but the kids here were rarely with adults just running around. this was unlike any family friendly resort that I’ve stayed at. Lastly, they try to get you to go to Occidental Punta Cana for breakfast. It’s a timeshare scam. They will ask for your id and credit card information; I knew enough to say, no thank you. They offered it 3-4 times so we just started to avoid the gentleman who kept bothering us. He waits in the lobby in front of the elevators. My bf and I acted like it was a mission to avoid him during our stay lol.

The Dominican Republic imposes various restrictions each year for Easter. The restrictions usually begin the Thursday prior to Good Friday, and run a few days past Easter Sunday. The following regulations may be enforced:
*Motorized watersports may be banned
*Non-motorized water sports may be limited, or banned
*Alcohol consumption may be restricted (most resorts obtain a special permit which enables them to serve alcohol to nonnative persons during the ban)
*Music may be limited or silencedThese guidelines are currently vague because actual enforcement by the local government does vary greatly from one year to the next. Each year the actual policies are not published by the local authorities until just prior to Easter. These rules are designed for the safety of everyone, as beaches get extremely busy during this period.
