10 tips for your stay, don't repeat our mistakes...
My family and I recently stayed at the Melia Cabre Beach resort. Some thoughts from our stay that I hope you can use for yours: (1) Waiting until arrival to make restaurant reservations: we made reservations through a pre-arrival email address after reading a Facebook post from other travelers. It is absolutely true, the restaurants will be fully booked the day you arrive and it will be impossible to get a reservation anywhere. Unless you were eating at The Level’s restaurant. In order just to change our reservation at the steakhouse, I had to speak with the concierge and the manager of the hotel and even then it was a fight. (2) The menus may not be accurate: at the stake restaurant, I ordered a mixed platter of barbecue the menu and was served three roast sausages for example. Leads to my next point… (3) For some reason, no one really knows anything at the hotel. Let me give you some examples. We wanted to attend a sushi rolling class, we found the same class listed at two locations and the resort - and some members who attended the class were told to go to the Japanese restaurant. Another example are the coconuts to drink out of. The concierge, the main olive bar in the lobby, The Level bar and our ‘butler’ had no idea. Multiple employees said that the hotel did not offer it or had no idea where to get it. Meanwhile, you can buy one for five dollars or two for eight dollars in front of the Roomba restaurant at a hotel operated snack shack on the beach. There seems to be a lot of examples of this utter lack of communication anywhere. (4) I received The Level upgrade for free, I don’t think I would pay for it. Don’t get me wrong, the level restaurant was nice. Even there however, especially at dinner, the service was terrible. We saw diners get up and leave mid meal. My family and I could not find anyone for drinks, coffee, or just basic attentiveness. The biggest fail, however, was our Butler. This individual provided his WhatsApp number to be in contact for questions of the hotel activities and reservations. Every question I ask when ignored and it became a channel to promote events that cost money or upsell us to activities. It was merely a sales tactic. What’s even more laughable, is my ‘butler’ was making reservations for my family after we had already checked out and got on our plane, sharing the sheer lack of any connectivity at all. (5) Second Dinner: well I’m sure there are great restaurants at the hotel, but of the meals that we ate at the Riviera and the steakhouse, either the proportions were not large enough or there is something flawed with the dinner. This led on three occasions for my family to have the ‘second dinner’ or ‘second breakfast’ at the buffet. The buffet turned out to be a great place with a lot of selection, however, I could not imagine eating every meal there and having no other reservations. (6) Get your towels early and make sure you have towels before 3pm. The towel service at the hotel stopped multiply at 5pm, and if you did not have a towels, there is no way of getting another one. We had to order extra room towels order to make up the difference. Get towels early and hold them all day. (7) The waterpark is a great place for families and kids. The waterslides are sufficient for nine and under, anyone older will have a difficult time getting down. The hotel had just refurbished and cleaned the waterpark before we arrive. Even then, the two giant bucket splash dumps, or somehow not working while we were there. Not sure how you can close a waterpark for maintenance and still have two of the largest activities broken. (8) Misadvertised room types. One of the primary reasons why we chose this hotel was the five person suite for my family. However, on arrival, the room had beds for only four people. When we asked for a five sleeper, the response was a downgrade to our room to a worse location. The only solution to keep our room, was to add a mattress on the floor, which meant we were shoved into our room like a dorm. The kids and I laughed about it as an adventure, but really it was terrible. I asked the concierge and the hotel receptionist if they would compensate our family with a meal or an event given the type living quarters and the bad experience. Hotel management said no. (9) Be prepared to walk. Well, my family and I like to walk, the 15 minutes or so it took to be between the beach, our room, and the main lobby wore us down. The hotel does offer free shuttles, but I’d recommend especially if you get little kids to choose an area close the splash pad, the main pool or the VIP pool. The constant walking was exhausting and the tram schedule is unpredictable. (10) Lastly, we would told just days before our trip that the main pool was closed. No warning. This means everyone was crammed inside of the VIP Level pool.

YHI Spa is the best
At Meliá Caribe Beach in YHI Spa Caribe Kissardis assisted us at the front desk and Idalina and Miguelina were our massage therapists. As always, the spa did not disappoint . We come to this one even when we are staying at one of the other Meliá resorts in Punta Cana! (Bonus: it’s cheaper!)
