The “mirage” is everything looks good from afar
I had high hopes for this vacation based on the number of gleaming reviews. I soon learned that the people who had posted negative experiences were not being “picky”. I want to prevent someone else from wasting the nearly $8000 we spent. Go somewhere else. The number of issues that we encountered included 2 cases of food poisoning, a cut foot in the pool from tiles in disrepair, choosing between air con that kept the room at 60° or no air con and living in humidity, food that all seemed like it came from a commissary and spotty service. Check in took way longer than it should have, particularly since I had done part of it before we arrived. There was food and beverages in the reception area. The food looked tired and worse than what one would find in mediocre airport lounges. It was so unappealing that though I was hungry, I opted to pass. We got to our room. It was frigid though the thermostat read 82°. Things in the room were tired and rusty. Filthy and worn out outlets and switches, spackled walls left unpainted, rusted trash cans and mirrors. Maintenance came to check the air con and told us that it was cold because it was cold outside. (Not how it works). We asked them to bring in a thermo checking tool and it read high 50s. We moved rooms the following day because it was either freeze or sit in humidity. The second room was marginally better temperature wise but still too cold. Once again, the thermostat could be set to 82° yet it was clearly much lower. The bigger concerns are cleanliness and hygiene in the restaurants. This is where the management should be fully ashamed of themselves. Tongs were often missing at breakfast and lunch buffets. Many guests would graze like farm animals. I saw the executive chef look around to see the buffet area. There was literally one tong on the entire breakfast bread and pastry area (about 12 feet). I assumed he would bring it to someone’s attention. Instead, he grabbed a bagel with his hands, toasted it and then made himself comfortable in the dining room. Look at the photos of how he keeps his kitchen. (The Marketplace) Disgusting. Two of the four of us got food poisoning and spent a day each with vomiting and diarrhea. The floors in that restaurant are also always slippery from humidity. I don’t know how more people don’t fall. Older people or those with mobility issues should be very cautious. The pools have tiles popping off like crazy. Our youngest daughter cut her foot on these broken shards. When we asked for a bandage at the bar, we were told that we could buy some at the pharmacy. The only à la carte restaurant that was quality service and food was the French restaurant. The Italian restaurant that people raved about was freezing. Food even made table side was cold. And the overall taste was worse than an Olive Garden. Anyone raving about the food there clearly has not eaten good Italian food. Room service would take 90 minutes on average. The Japanese tepenyaki restaurant was good but very likely where one of the food poisoning occurrences came from. The food handling was suspect both how things were transported and held. On the plus side, drinks were good except for the included wines which were horrible. The martini bar is fabulous and the Aperol carts around the resort were a nice touch. There is also a coffee cart in the mornings that makes great lattes and espressos. Avoid the drip coffee in the restaurants because it is awful. The nightly entertainment was a fun addition and the troupe works hard to make a fun night. Daytime activities were also fun. The schedules were often not properly updated so you have to double-check things. The spa was the gem of the resort. It is the only location that you can find a heated hot tub. And only one at that. Still, it’s an enjoyable experience even at prices that are high even for US prices. Our butler was kind and helpful but would often turn up in our room at unexpected times. They meant well. But it was too much. I don’t want to name them here because it wasn’t done with malice. I just don’t want someone in my room with regularity when I am trying to relax. I absolutely would not go back. And I would suggest to anyone to look elsewhere. We had a lovely time as a family but the resort was total crap and a huge disappointment.

Enjoyable Stay
The resort is a nicely kept up resort with various options to eat at. The rooms are well maintained and extremely spacious. The steak house was extremely delicious. Francisco, my assigned butler, was very attentive and kind. He supports you in any way possible and goes beyond and above to make you feel at home. Ana Maria and John were phenomenal at the Seaside morning buffet. By the end of my trip, they knew what I wanted before I request it.
