Worst Resort Experience We’ve Ever Had – Do Not Recommend

My husband and I visited Iberostar Selection Cancún in November 11, and our experience was so distressing and disappointing that we left after only one night—paying extra to return to Toronto early. This is the first time we’ve ever had to cut a vacation short, and we have stayed at many all-inclusive resorts before without any issues. Unfortunately, what we experienced at this property was completely unacceptable. We arrived on a Tuesday night and immediately encountered issues. The buffet, which is typically a highlight at all-inclusive resorts, offered very limited options, and the food quality was extremely poor. The meat was hard and chewy, the tacos tasted old, and the overall selection was so unappealing that we couldn’t eat. We hoped our room would redeem the experience, but we were told no room was available and had to wait two hours before one opened up. When we finally received a room, the situation actually worsened. The room had been recently painted, and the paint smell was overwhelming. The odor was so strong that it caused headaches, dizziness, and difficulty breathing for both me and my husband. Sleeping was impossible. Since we couldn’t eat at the buffet, we ordered room service. After waiting almost an hour, they brought us a poor-quality pizza and chicken quesadillas that had a bad smell and were inedible. We contacted concierge again, and they moved us to another room located in the back of the main building where renovations were actively taking place. Although this room didn’t smell like paint, it was extremely cold, and we woke up shivering. We contacted staff to adjust the temperature, but they told us there was no way to change it. When we asked for an extra blanket, they brought us only a thin bedsheet. We also requested someone to come fix the temperature; the staff member said something in Spanish, left, and never returned. As if the night wasn’t difficult enough, the next morning we were awakened early by the sound of loud construction. Dozens of workers began drilling, hammering, and repairing parts of the property, making it impossible to rest or recover from the previous night’s ordeal. When we reported this to concierge and the Air Transat representative, they casually explained that this time of year is renovation season for property maintenance—as if this justified the total lack of warning or consideration. They did not care, nor did they make any effort to change our room or accommodate us in any meaningful way. By morning, I became very sick, vomiting and experiencing low blood pressure, likely due to the cold room, lack of sleep, and inability to eat properly. We were forced to book an early flight home. Since our original flight was scheduled for days later, we had to pay extra to return to Toronto on Wednesday night—less than 24 hours after arriving. To make matters worse, the weather was cold and nobody could use the beach or pools, yet the resort still failed to provide heated rooms or adequate blankets to keep guests comfortable. Overall, this was a terrible experience and completely unlike any all-inclusive resort we’ve visited before. Between the unsafe room conditions, overwhelming paint fumes, freezing temperatures, poor food quality, nonstop construction noise, and the staff’s lack of interest in helping, we felt abandoned and forced to leave early for our own health and safety. We were extremely disappointed and hope the resort takes these issues seriously. Based on our experience, we cannot recommend Iberostar Selection Cancún.

    Great trip

This was my second visit and I actually liked it better this time. Went w/ a friend and stayed 3 nights in an ocean view double. Checkin was smooth. Ocean was rough but seaweed free. Drink service on the beach was great. We checked in on a saturday and was able to get hibachi reservations for monday at 530. Each night we dined at 530 w no issue. but there were waits after that. We ate: hibachi, american bistro and italian. All 3 were amazing.. surf and turf at american was great and free! lunch we mostly just had tacos at the taco "stand" which was great. Breakfast buffet had a nice variety. In room shampoo wasnt great but got the job done. Room was dated for sure but clean. Fav in the lobby was Aldo.. great at making drinks.. at the swim up bar we loved Raymundo, Edwin, Alejandra and Santiago. Nightly entertainment was lacking in my opinion. They also didnt list everything on the schedule. So there would be stuff outside at night we didnt know about. The theater production was very ummm amateur but we still had fun.

    Very few food options

The only restaurant that is open for breakfast is the same old buffet food everyday. The only restaurant that is open for lunch is the same old buffet food everyday. They only have about 3 other small restaurants that are only open for dinner so these are full within a couple of hours. Room service is available if you want to wait an hour for a piece of pizza in your room. However, there is no shortage of concierges (timeshare salesmen). You are immediately harassed as soon as you walk in the door. The pool and beach is beautiful and the staff work hard and are very friendly.
