🌊 “From Skeptical to Sold: Our Family of 6 at Hard Rock Riviera Maya”

🌊 “From Skeptical to Sold: Our Family of 6 at Hard Rock Riviera Maya” We are a family of six from northern Alberta, Canada (kids 13, 12, 9, and 6), and this was our first big all-inclusive trip to Mexico as a family. Before kids, my husband and I had stayed at several resorts over the years — in Costa Rica, Mexico, Jamaica, Antigua, and the Dominican. So while those trips were a long time ago, we definitely knew what we liked… and what we didn’t. When planning this trip, we originally booked a smaller resort because I thought that would feel safer and easier with four kids. We love the ocean way more than pools, and especially love calm water where you can snorkel right at the resort. That was a highlight for us in Costa Rica and Jamaica. We also had one previous experience in Mexico where the seaweed situation was absolutely awful — the smell, the murky water — and I knew we did NOT want a repeat of that. Long story short, our flights were cancelled, I cancelled the whole package (lesson learned about booking through Expedia), and we rebooked at Hard Rock Riviera Maya through Sunwing about six weeks before departure. It was a great price, but I was nervous. I had also stayed at a massive resort years ago and hated the endless walking, golf carts, multiple lobbies, and chaos. Turns out? I worried for nothing. ⸻ The Size – Perfectly Walkable This resort is big — but not overwhelming. Completely walkable. We had zero issues getting around as a family of six. I actually loved that different areas had different vibes. If you’re worried about it being “too big,” don’t be. ⸻ Airport Transfer Tip The Nexus transfer from Cancun was long. We waited an hour for luggage, 45 minutes to leave the airport, and about 1.5 hours on the bus. The kids were exhausted and starving by the time we arrived. Next time, I would 100% book private round-trip transportation. ⸻ The Upgrade – Best Decision Ever We originally booked a Grand Sky Terrace Deluxe Family Room. It likely would’ve been fine, but we wanted to be closer to the action instead of at the back by the jungle. We upgraded to an Oceanfront Presidential Suite… and WOW. It was stunning. Spacious. The view was absolutely breathtaking. We skipped excursions and honestly, it was worth it just for that view alone. My husband insisted we sleep with the patio doors open so we could hear the waves all night. Waking up to sunrise with coffee on the deck was unforgettable. The boys had cots instead of the pullout couch, the girls had the king suite — everyone was comfortable. Housekeeping was fantastic. When we mentioned the floors needed a proper mop after our late upgrade, it was handled immediately. Endless towels and water. No complaints at all. ⸻ Grounds & Cleanliness – 10/10 The landscaping is some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. The walkways, flowers, rock walls, lighting at night — the Azul fountain area is stunning. The resort felt incredibly clean. Pool bathrooms were never gross (which is rare at resorts). Every night staff cleaned and sprayed chairs and tables. Everyone worked hard and always said, “It’s my pleasure.” It really showed. ⸻ Azul vs Rojo – We Found Our Spot We stayed near Hacienda Azul by Isla buffet and loved that side. It was calmer and more relaxed. We visited Rojo for one beach morning and one pool day — and that was enough for us. It was louder, busier, and felt more chaotic. Pro tip: Instead of waiting in long outdoor food lines at Rojo, we’d go into Isla at Azul, grab a to-go tray, and pick whatever we wanted from the buffet. No lines. So much easier. ⸻ The Food – We Ate Everywhere We managed to eat at every family-friendly à la carte restaurant by going early or late. Around 6:30pm there were long waits, so timing matters. Favorites: • Toro Steakhouse • Zen (hibachi was a hit) • Ciao (we went twice!) • Los Gallos • Frida’s (our personal favorite) The Market buffet was surprisingly excellent one night, and room service was fast and good. Special tip: ASK FOR THE SPECIALTY DRINK MENU at every restaurant. I didn’t even see it until halfway through the week, and those were the best drinks I had. We were honestly nervous about getting sick because friends had bad experiences elsewhere in Mexico recently. None of us got sick. Food quality was excellent. ⸻ Entertainment – Honest Take Live music was good. The fire show was fun. Beatles tribute was enjoyable. However, some of the dancers during shows and pool entertainment felt too inappropriate for our kids. It didn’t add to the experience for us and made me uncomfortable. So we simply chose what to attend — and spent more time at the beach instead. Easy solution. ⸻ The Beach – We Completely Disagree with Negative Reviews We had read reviews saying “the beach sucks.” We wholeheartedly disagree. The beach was one of the biggest highlights of our entire trip. Crystal clear water. Calm. Warm. No seaweed. No smell. No grossness. My husband snorkeled daily and saw lionfish, eels, tons of fish, sea urchins — my daughter swears she saw a seahorse. My youngest spent hours collecting hermit crabs and building “hermit crab hotels.” It was magical for our family. We would come back just for this beach. ⸻ Activities – So Much to Do Rockaway Bay water park was a huge hit. All four kids loved it. We also did: • Laser tag (super fun) • Rock wall climbing (great workout!) • Trampoline park • Indoor playground • Bowling at Vibe City (surprisingly great drinks there too!) My older son said Vibe City was his highlight — he wanted to go every day “for all the good vibes.” 😎 ⸻ Final Thoughts I am so glad our original plans fell through and we ended up here. Hard Rock Riviera Maya turned out to be the perfect mix of relaxation, fun, beautiful scenery, great food, and family activities. For a family of six with kids of very different ages, that’s saying something. We would absolutely return.

Our second trip, even better than our first!

This was our second trip to HRRM in a year, and this place continues to meet all of our expectations and then some. We went for 10 days, and we had a fantastic experience. We went as a group of 4 families (8 adults 7 kids) and all of us had been to Mexico in the past. We are also Legendary Members and had the ability to get a butler for our group. This was the first time we did this, but it made the trip so much easier with a large group. It was so easy to get seating at the pools, dinner, and shows daily. We had Moises and Paola as our butlers. We clearly hit the jackpot with them!!! They were responsive, fast and always made our lives easy. We never had a no any question we had , and always looked for an option to take care of us. Moises has many great skills that come out as he does his job. If he has the ability to move up in the chain, he should be promoted. He is genuine and kind to everyone and it showed in his work. It was always nice to see them around the property and they are truly an asset to the organization and well represented the hotel. Most of our friends have never been to a hard rock and they were blown away by their staff. The property is clean, always being well maintained and kept up. There was always staff working and keeping all aspects of the property clean. The pools were nice and clear, and I felt good about getting in without feeling gross. It was a little cold but once you were in it was fine. The swim up bars were actually very empty, but the bartenders did a great job getting drinks out. We didn’t have any detailed drinks, but all were good and the servers always came around to make sure we were attended to. Our rooms were the sky terraces and they are great for a family of 4. Our kids got good sleep and the beds were very comfortable. Our kids did kids club and LOVED IT. Even our oldest really didn’t want to go, but after she went she wanted to stay longer than we expected. They do a great job with kids and keeping them entertained. Night shows were awesome! I loved every show and our friends mentioned how much better they are than other resorts they have been to. The only negative review I have is that food service is slow. We had reservations for the 8:30 shows and went were seated at 6:30 for dinner.. we almost missed the shows due to waiting for our meals. Also kids were given their full meal before adults were given a main course. It made it hard for us to entertain kids and eat at the same time. The only exception was for Zen when we had hibachi. For the most part, this place is awesome. And great for families. We will be coming back again in the future.
