False Advertising
Not impressed with the hotel at all. We got skunked with our hotel room. Checkin took forever, they were not organized at all. I get it, we are in another country, but it was ridiculous. People standing behind the counter doing nothing and 2 ladies checking everyone in. The room we stayed in was not updated/renovated. I referred to it as the ghetto. The tub held water when we showered (just below my knees), tiles in the floor were cracked, mirrors had rust spots on them, room had a smell the whole time we were there. Food was average, nothing to brag about. SNORKELING was AMAZING. That was the best part of the trip. Made up for the rest. Please don’t think I’m a travel snob because I am not. Just sad when we were under the impression that the hotel was remodeled. Part of it was and unfortunately we were in the area that was not remodeled. If I had to rate the hotel, I’d give it a 4/10.

Expected Paradise received Purgatory
The worst resort experience we have ever had. After the two hour ride from Cancun we were taken to our room #4331.It was in a very run down looking building and on the third floor with no elevator. The room was very bare looking with no decoration just dirty looking white plaster walls. The bathroom had stained walls and the toilet handle had to be jiggled about to stop it running. The ceiling fan looked like it had never been cleaned, the coffee maker was also uncleaned with pods that were going mouldy, the cheap balcony curtains were hanging off the rails and the balcony was filthy and overlooked another filthy balcony with broken roof tiles everywhere. Housekeeping was very inconsistent. We were told to be sure and meet with the Sunwing rep for orientation but there was no rep so we had to stumble around to find things. When booking we were not told that certain restaurants were off limits to us as we were third rate guests. Of the eight restaurants advertised three were off limits and the others were not open every night. The bed was comfortable.

Image shown is NOT hotel you have access to
The photo shown in the adverts is not the hotel. To sit there you will be told it’s £60 per person per day or for the beach £80, or you can sit in a back pool and stare at a wall. They will also treat you like a criminal if you try to get in that pool and told you should have booked at the Sian Kian, a completely different hotel that that pool belongs to! You can see the beach pool from our room, but it’s not for us the paupers (of which everyone at Grand Oasis is considered despite the £2k each to get here)

Moderate to average
The Grand Oasis deserves it's 3.5 star rating. There are so many things that are good and so many things that could be better. First the location, it's fairly isolated, Tulum is the nearest town of size and is 23 km away. Its not much of a town but lots of trinket shops, bars etc. Getting there by taxi is expensive but the Collectivo bus system works great. Excellent value for 3.00usd but you have a 10 minute walk to the highway, then cross (carefully) and flag down a bus when it comes along, usually within 10 minutes. it can be crowded, especially coming back. The hotel is pretty cool, nice pools, lots of mature vegetation, palms, ferns etc, lots of shady areas. However it can be confusing to get around in, lots of sharp rights and lefts just to get to the room units. The unit we were in is 3 story, one set of stairs in the middle, no elevator. There are plenty of complaints about this, from older people especially. If you're on the 3 floor, as we were, those stairs are a bear. I'd like to say the service for the rooms was great, but it was not. We had to complain at the desk to get our room made up after not done for two days. Our room itself was excellent, very good AC, a spacious, well shaded balcony, everything worked as it should and the one issue we had with the sliding doors was quickly addressed. Staff in general were friendly and helpful however, while Mexico is a Spanish speaking country in a resort setting like this good communication in English is expected and unfortunately was not always present. Food provisions were alright for the most part but the restaurants tended to have wait times of .5 hour or more at common meal times. Restaurants were closed on rotating bases night to night. Waits were shorter at the buffet but quality there, while acceptable, left a little to be desired, time to time. All in all I think 3.5 stars is about right.

Awesome resort!
We had a fantastic time at this resort! From the minute we arrived until we left, we were treated with much regard, kindness and helpfulness by all the staff there. Shout out to Evelyn (I’m bad with names, but I’m pretty sure that’s her name) at the reception desk - so helpful and pleasant, as we’re all of the reception staff! Loved being served every day by Juan at the beach bar - check out the mango margarita - delicious! The restaurants were fantastic! My only complaint was I didn’t discover the Japanese restaurant until the last night - amazing! All of the wait staff were attentive, polite and hard working. Shout out to Victor and Rose at the restaurant reception desk. No reservations required for these restaurants and very little to no wait times to get in the a la carte. The buffet was also very good morning, noon and night. Don’t forget to tip these amazing hard working people. The beach was beautiful every day - the last 2 days lots of seaweed came in - it was too overwhelming for the maintenance staff to deal with. The public washrooms were always clean - which I am sure is quite the fear given the amount of people in and out of them all day!We loved our room - so spacious and roomy! The swim up pool at the end of our patio was the icing on the cake! We plan on returning next year.
