Older property in an amazing location

First, the great - the Grand Decameron (formerly Royal Decameron) is located in the absolute best beach area of San Jose del Cabo. It's right next door to the Hyatt Ziva, which typically sells for 4 times as much per night. This is the absolute best location in San Jose del Cabo, right in the heart of the resort district, and conveniently located. We also really appreciated the front desk staff fixing our reservation and moving us into a king room from the two twins originally assigned (this wasn't the hotel's fault, it was an error caused by the reservation platform we used). The good - We really enjoyed the thought and care that the entertainment director put into creating fun activities which included people from all over the world speaking both Spanish and English. Even though the clientele of this property is primarily Spanish speaking, we never felt excluded or unable to participate in any activities. We also really enjoyed meeting the friendly orange and white cat at the Luna restaurant. Give her pets but not food, please! We hope she is well cared for by the resort. The OK - Service in the restaurants is professional but brusque. The food was just OK, but for the price paid we were expecting "buffet, not boutique." This did meet our expectations, but did not exceed them. The experience could be elevated without much additional cost by offering a fresh omelette station for breakfast, a patio barbecue option (think hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken) for lunch, and making the "Luna" restaurant reservation system less onerous (reservations are so complicated to make that the restaurant was not full during our stay). Also, TVs in the rooms are small and are only a regular TV; they don't have modern smart TV features like YouTube access. This encouraged us to get out and enjoy the resort activities, though (which we enjoyed), so it wasn't necessarily a bad thing. The Harvest Strategy - You know the drill - a corporation is continuing to operate their asset, and the maintenance staff is doing what they can to keep things patched up and holding together, but the business is not investing in the property. It's difficult to ignore that almost everything else in the neighborhood is a lot fancier and more expensive. Eventually this property will be demolished (like the Holiday Inn down the street was) and replaced with a fancy new $1,000 per night mega-resort. So, set your expectations accordingly based on the price you're paying. This isn't the Four Seasons, but it's perfectly nice anyway. The two maintenance issues we reported in our room (both resulting from the age of the property) were promptly and courteously addressed. The Bad - The WiFi was absolutely terrible in our room. I had to find the one corner where it sort of worked and set up my Pixel phone as a WiFi repeater to use it at all. If you're planning on a working vacation, you'll need to figure out some other way to get online than the hotel Internet, or you'll need to plan to work from the lobby (the WiFi works fine in the lobby).

    Great vacation without hassle!!!

The room was clean and service was impeccable. Staff from the check in time to our last day at the restaurant good not be better. They made sure to attend to all your needs. We didn't need to ask , just look. The staff works 6 days per week and if you stay long enough, they get to know you and what you like it. I can't remember all their names and still would like to take them all for the great service. Here are some names to remember ...Bianca, Juan, Javier, Martin, Soledad, and many others at the restaurant whose faces are not forgotten. You should expect to eat Mexican style good food. The hotel has some specific dinner different night menus such as Asian and so on. Luna's menu changes everyday and reservations are required. You should be able to make reservations at early morning and then back to sleep. 😀 The facility location is perfect. There are restaurants and a supermarket at a walking distance . The supermarked has pharmacy, bakery, coffee shop , bistro, and you can find anything you can think about including a wash machine and motorcycle. Many different shops at walking distance and downtown is few minutes away by car. We paid Uber between 75 to 85 pesos depending on the time of the day. If you are looking for luxury try Casa Azul, beautiful hotel with a tag. I would totally stay here again. We really enjoyed our time.

    Kind staff and great time!

Great staff! Kind people. Angela and Fortino were so so amazing. Loved the burger and ceviche tostadas at the snack bar. The pool was fantastic, perfect temperature and clean. Met some really fun other families and had a relaxing fun time.

    Great experience

Grand Decameron was awesome. It was our 2nd time there. The beach is right there, however waters are too rough to swim. It was still nice to relax there. There is a beach about a 25 min bus ride away, Medano beach where you can swim. The hotel is a bit dated but nothing major. Great food, although I would have liked a few more American items. Staff is great, especially Fatima, one if the servers in the buffet restaurant. She was very attentive. We enjoyed the pool and entertainment. Price is great for what you get. We will stay again.

    A little gem!

Upon arrival I was concerned, but ended up loving this resort. It is a very small hotel so even though it was 90 percent occupancy during our stay- it feels empty! Likely bc people are divided bettwrn the 3 pools, beach, and off-site. Alot of Mexican tourists which makes the vibe really fun! Food was not my favourite but come on….you can always find something you like! Ended up loving the turkey hot dog and veggie burger at the poolside snack house. Breakfast buffet always solid! Drinks….alot of syrup but again, one finds something one likes (prosecco oh yes!). I found the entertainment around the pool too loud (calling out bingo numbers at blaring volume!). Best part was the people- staff are all lovely, and because it is small you see the same guests again and again and you end up chatting. This is not the Hyatt next door but you paid alot less too- just manage your expectations and you will have a great time in paradise. Thank you Decameron for a great holiday!
