Stay here and you become Family!!
Fantastic resort by all means! Having been to several all inclusive's, this resort tops them. First off, the staff make this resort. When I arrived and talked to guests, several of them said it was their 8th or 10th time visiting. The staff is wonderful, always smiling, and happy to help guests. Please don't forget to tip the workers- they work super hard and aren't paid well. The animation team is high energy, always engaging the guests. The food is super fresh and very organized. The buffet has tons of options. Healthy salad bar, lots of authentic food to try, fresh fruits, pasta and pizza station. This resort really kicks up the food! Ahh don't forget the desserts, the flan is out of this world. The beach is fantastic, zero garbage or seaweed. Plenty of lounge chairs and the vendors approach you- politely say no thank you. They are trying to make a living. I can't wait to come back and visit everyone. When you stay here, you become family. *Please note, due to the CORONA Virus the resort is temporarily closed*
This was our 1st time here. A friend recommended it. We have made about 40 trips so I think I can give an honest review. We arrived on a Friday from Toronto and our first impression was good. Very easy ck in, taken to our room quickly and quickly went out to check things out. The staff are very good. The grounds are always being maintained. The beach is fantastic and you can walk forever and the ocean is very warm and clean. We were very impressed with the quality, quantity and variation of the foods. There is no reason to go to the Ala carts, they are good but the buffet is also very good. So don't sweat it if you don't have a reservation. Management should consider real cream at the coffee bar by the pool and in the rooms. I could go on but the bottom line is that YES we would recommend the Gran Ventana to anyone including our friends and will be back .
Wonderful people and great food
We visited at the end of February 2020 and when all is said and done I would give it 4 stars for the resort but had one thing not changed it would be a lower rating. We originally were put in building 3 facing the road. There were trucks and cars all night long and the patio door is not remotely sound proof so it was so loud I couldn't sleep. The room also looked pretty dingy, stains on the lampshade, wire hanging out of the wall behind the desk. We saw into another room in this building that looked nicer so this may have been a bad room. We told the front desk and our wonderful West Jet rep that we needed to be moved. The other issue with building 3 is it is a hike to the main area, where the buffet, beach, and lobby is. Some may actually prefer this if you want a quiet area the pool at building three is lovely and quiet with it's own bar. If your room were facing this and not the road I think it would be very nice for low key people. They were very accommodating and moved us as soon as they could, had to spend one more night in that room then moved to building 2. Now we are talking 4 stars. Beautiful view, close to the action, and best of all the only loud noises was the birds chirping! I would come back to this resort and stay in that room again for sure. The next thing is the food was awesome. I am a vegetarian and my boyfriend is not. We were both very happy with the buffet. You need to book the restaurants early as they fill up quick. Honestly, the buffet was so good I didn't care that we didnt try all three restaurants. One day the chef made me plantain for breakfast just because we asked if they had any, so nice! They make amazing pasta and pizza fresh to order. I could just keep going on but we are foodies and I'm telling you the food was great. I wish they left the snack bar open all day though if just for nachos and cheese! The staff are incredibly nice and personable. There are a lot of people from Canada visiting that are regulars and keep coming back and they are so close with the staff, I loved seeing it. The staff really seem happy. The resort is very clean, they work hard at keeping it well maintained. Even when it was monsoon raining they were out there raking! Entertainment was amusing, honestly never been my thing to watch the entertainment but they did some nice shows and karaoke was hilarious. They do a great water aerobics every day and I saw a yoga area on a gazebo. The main entertainment guy works really hard and speaks French and English, hold on to him! We were there during Independence Day for DR and they had a parade with the school kids and a Carnival parade the next day! Wonderful timing for us! They even had fireworks! We rented the bikes one day and they are in desperate need of a tune up put even still they were a lot of fun. The main pool was quite busy and people put their towels down on the best chairs early. The beach always had chairs and lots of great spots. The beach was so much better than I expected. Safe to swim, well kept, good for snorkeling especially during low tide around 5pm. No one bothered us selling items they just walk by. In fact no one tried to sell us anything here and I so greatly appreciate that!!! No timeshares people is a blessing! We did one excursion and if you have never done it well I highly suggest! It was the city tour for 49.00. We booked through our West Jet rep Super Julio. They took us up the cable car for stunning views, and to see the replica of the Rio Christ the Redemer statue. Then to the rum, amber and cigar factory (three stops), to the city square (old church, souvenir shop), see the very old fort also with gorgeous views and lastly to the grocery store where you can get liquor and snacks very cheap. They have a plaza on the compound where you can buy gifts, snacks, liquor, pharmacy stuff and it has a movie theater. It is much cheaper going to the grocery store for those things though. I felt very safe and well taken care of the whole time. We met some great people and it was a really good vacation. I really love the landscape of Puerto Plata, the mountains are stunning and would prefer that over just a white sand beach any day.
Not as good as the first time
We visited this resort in 2012 with 2 or our adult children and had a great time. What really helps is when the entertainment team gets involved with the guests. In 2012 in was great! In 2020 not so much. The food quality is excellent, no complaints there. But, the entertainment team never came around trying to let guests know if there were games going on. Only one day during our 7 day visit did I get to participate in a poolside game: pineapple toss into the pool. Another day we got to play bingo because it was raining. It rained for 2 days straight. There weren't many things being done to keep the guests busy. The first day of rain we played bingo, but only for 2 games. My brother wins the first game and they took his card away from him. They told him he wasn't allowed to win again. They had yoga on the theater stage for an hour while the guests that were playing bingo either had to leave the area in the downpour or watch. More than 50 guests were playing bingo while 8 guests did yoga. The entertainment team would have some guests go on the dance floor at night. The male team members only asked the pretty girls/ladies to dance while the female guests would dance with any male guest. There was a karaoke night. I finished third and won a bag of coffee. I'm glad I didn't win 2nd place because the prize was a small bottle of rum that the male entertainment team member stuck in his pants and rubbed the bottle against his crotch. Most of the bartenders aren't very helpful if you don't tip them. The would serve guests that either were young and pretty or had money in their hand. Our second last night there was a male guest that was quite intoxicated. He was pushing guests around, trying to start a fight. One of the ladies in our group got pushed in her face by this guest. He threatened to kill me if I touched him. This was reported to the bartenders, but they kept feeding him more alcohol/beer. He started fighting with the security guards that are older gentlemen. My brother and I went to help the security guards. I have several decades of martial arts training, so I brought the guest to the floor for the guards so they could handcuff him. I just don't understand why the bartenders would keep supplying alcohol to someone that was harassing the other guests and threatening them. Our last day on the resort the bartenders thanked me for assisting them. I never heard anything from the management about helping their security guards. This was our 8th time to Puerto Plata, our 21st time to an all-inclusive. I have many trips under my belt to compare our experience with many others. We love the Dominican Republic and we will visit again, but we won't go back to The Gran Ventana again.
Another Perfect Visit
This was our 12th visit to the GV. We like it! This time we stayed for three weeks. The staff are amazing and that's what makes it so perfect. The rooms are clean, but need updated a little bit. For example, great smart TVs, but terrible picture. But how much time do you spend in the room?! Food is great and the quality in the restaurants has improved over time. If you like good wine, buy a bottle since the free wine is pretty awful. Beer is great!
