What We Love
- The scenery is extraordinary. It's right in the middle of Soberania National Park, a tropical rainforest home to lush plant life, animals, birds, insects and reptiles.
Things to Know
- The Gamboa Rainforest Resort has everything you could ask for with extra perks such as the location so close to nature.
The lush grounds of Gamboa Rainforest Resort are 35 minutes from Panama City and along the banks of the Chagres River and Gatun Lake. These valuable Panama Canal water sources are the backdrop to serenity and adventure, though the pool is a safer bet for swimming unless you like alligators! Paddle up to Cascadas swim-up bar for a mojito while soaking up the sun, and when hunger strikes take your pick of the three dining options. Corotu Restaurant's international theme dinners – from Italian to Panamanian – offer guests a taste tour, and Chagres River View Restaurant offers exquisite fine dining. After dinner, guests can groove to live music or relax to the nighttime sounds of the rainforest on the terrace at the Monkey Lobby Bar.
In order for guests to take full advantage of the area's unique eco-system, the resort has educational exhibits along pathways and trails. Let wonder guide you through the freshwater fish aquarium, reptile exhibit and historical and cultural displays. The resort's tours are a popular way to explore the surrounding environment totally worry-free, and the Arial Tram Tour gives you a bird's-eye view of breathtaking flora and fauna. The Monkey Island Tour brings guests face to face with capuchin and howler monkeys!
Adventuring can be tiring; luckily the resort's Sensory Spa by Clarins has the secret to winding down after a long day with natural herbs and minerals. We loved the quiet herbal wrap. When it's time to call it a day, the Standard Room's comfortable furnishings are just the thing. Looking for a bit of history? Choose one of the 48 renovated 1930s One Bedroom Historic Apartments.

Still a legend
The Gamboa may be old, somewhat outdated, and crowded with typical tourists, but nevertheless its charm is still unbeatable. Sitting high up on a room balcony and observing the beautiful landscape the jungle around the meandering river, this is a one-million-dollar view. Always a pleasure to return here. Still my recommendation for any first-time visitors to Panama.
We stayed at this resort for four nights in February, 2020 and enjoyed the stay very much. It's a wonderful location for fabulous birding trips. It's even a great place to see a variety of birds on the property. You don't have to go far - they are right there. The property is large and spread out and, as has been mentioned before, in a beautiful location. The resort itself is also lovely. The public areas are very nicely decorated and the landscaping is beautiful. They offer a variety of nature excursions and other guests have included that in their reviews. We were with independent guides and we did not take advantage of what the resort offered. Our room looked out over the lake and had a beautiful view. It was large and had a sitting area in the room and on the balcony. There was also a desk, a fridge and a coffee pot. It was nicely decorated and the all ceramic bathroom was also quite large with a very generous shower. (bring your own hand lotion,) The staff was, for the most part, cordial and there was at least one person in each area who spoke fluent English so communicating was not a problem. We only ate in two of the restaurants and found them better than average. The buffet offered a large variety of choices so anyone should be able to find something they liked, The nachos in the bar were especially good! All in all, we had a wonderful time at this resort and we enjoyed the beauty (and the birds) of the area.
We stayed here two nights on our Caravan tour. The setting is idyllic. The view from every room includes river and rain forest. The outside pool area is beautiful. The balcony has a hammock to relax. The lobby has a three level window on the entire back wall. The buffet food was delicious and the staff were all friendly and helpful. Sloths and interesting birds were on the grounds. Cool hiking trails close by.
Great basecamp for Gamboa area.
The GRR is a beautiful place. Great view of the Chagres River from the hotel, dining room, and rooms. The pool is large and fun to use the water based basket ball hoop. The grounds are spacious, plenty of nice walks. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The front desk and tour desk are multilingual. The dining staff typically only speak Spanish. They run many tours in the nearby rainforest, including a monkey tour on the Panama Canal. Downtown PC or the Amador Causeway is not far away if you have a car. They need to freshen the paint in a few places, which they are doing to some extent. Warning, it is a bit of a walk from the rooms to the lobby & dining area. But there is lots of wildlife to enjoy from the walkways. The famed Pipeline trail is nearby, if you are a birder or like wildlife walks. We were there just before the world-wide travel shutdown. Hopefully when travel returns people will experience this place.
Beautiful resort with a great night tour of the animal life!
We stayed here 2 nights as part of our Caravan tour and it is beautiful! There is a large pool with plenty of seating and with a basketball hoop in the pool as well as a bar. The lobby is grand and open air. They have beautiful metal hanging birds as artwork in the staircase leaving the lobby. The lobby has a large bar with plenty of seating. And downstairs, the restaurant is buffet style but excellent service, hot food and a large assortment of food items. And the desserts at night are enough to make you gain weight just looking at them! Rooms are huge, some with hammocks on the balconies. The bathroom is large enough for at least 10 people! Large shower, plenty of counter space and lots of fresh linens. Again very quiet. There are plenty of walking trails around the resort as well as a tour desk to help you with any excursions you may want to take. They do offer a complimentary night tour of the grounds in an open canopy jeep. They offer tours at 7:30 pm & 8 pm but sign up early at the excursion desk as they fill up fast. Bring bug spray as a precaution. We spotted 3 sloths, alligator and a few other animals. The main lobby has plenty of couches to relax and I noticed large conference rooms on the premises. Highly recommend this resort.
