A wonderful hotel with a superb staff

It’s difficult to decide where to start. This is a wonderful resort and a place where small kids to grandparents in our family all had a super vacation. The resort is beautiful, set in the jungle but with easy access to all activities. More on this later. I want to begin with the people. Each of the people seemed to be a perfect fit for his/her job. We met many people serving guests whether at the pool. restaurants, activities, front desk, at the front door, as boat captains, as golf cart drivers. We met area managers and people who cleaned the cabana floors. The common theme was that they couldn’t do enough for the guests and they ALL seemed to love their jobs. Whoever is responsible for hiring and training does a phenomenal job. I met the GM of the resort and it’s obvious he too loves his job and understands both the needs of the guests and the most effective way to maintain a very satisfied staff. Their staff turnover is particularly low due to high job satisfaction. The staff remains at the Fairmont because they love it there, not because the work is easy. On the contrary, everyone works hard but their joy of being there shines through. Given how important the guest experience is to the success of the hotel, let me start at the top. I met the GM on my second day at the property. I was heading to the beach area at about 7am and he stopped by driving a golf cart (the means of transportation at the property) and asked me if I wanted a lift. Each day during our week long vacation he found me (and often others in my family) somewhere and chatted about the day’s activities. He was interested in what we were doing and how we were spending our time and like the other employees in different positions that we ran into, he always asked if there was something he could do for us. On occasion we took him up on his offer and he always came through (ie, getting tough to get dinner reservations, etc.) He had his pulse on the hotel and it was obvious he was always thinking about how to improve the guest experience. There were many other wonderful employees with whom we interacted. Let me just mention a few. Daniel, our Butler was amazing. He couldn’t do enough for us. I always heard from him early in the morning by text or in person. He was so helpful. For example we hadn’t brought goggles for a 4 year old and couldn’t find any on property. He went off property and came back with a perfect snorkel set for him. When we needed some medication for an infant, he found it.He helped us in so many ways, it was hard to believe. And he always had a smile on his face. It was obvious that he LOVED his job. There were people by the pool and our cabanas that were also amazingly helpful, whether it was Angel, Federico, Ezekiel, or Marcos. They all were so helpful - always asking if there was something they could do for us. That was obviously the mantra of the hotel staff. At other hotels people would often on occasion act similarly, but here the staff seemed to really mean it and were delighted to help us. Paula, at breakfast was great creating order out of chaos, with many people often arriving at the Bassano at the same time. And all of the breakfast servers were quick, efficient and often smiling. The people at the front desk, for example Ana, would take care of you making you feel like you were the only guest checking in or out that day. The golf cart drivers were great drivers and very polite. The people overseeing the kids club were excellent, but the club, while suggesting that kids through 10 or so could use it had some issues. Our kids were frustrated because they could swim and they were limited at the kid’s club to a kiddie pool. They tried it a second day, but it had the same limitation. Then they spent the rest of the time with us rather than the kiddie pool. The counselors there also served as babysitters and in that role, they were terrific! Since our family is generally hooked on wifi, the fitness center wifi was pretty weak and the wifi by the pool with the cabanas was generally ok, but sporadically was weak as well and could use an upgrade. The one thing that could be made easier would be getting dinner reservation at the Fairmont’s restaurants and the restaurants at the other hotels as well. Sometimes it would be hard to get in to a restaurant and it would be relatively empty when we arrived (eg Tauro and Gaia) It just happened too often to be reasonable. One strange dinner event occurred at Gaia when the waiter at the end of dinner came around with a QR code to give a review. He said it was a review of Gaia, but it was really a review of the entire hotel. He just lingered there as we were filling it out. I felt so strange with him nearby, I filled it out quickly, but erased the review as we walked out of the restaurant. It felt like a car repair shop experience, totally demeaning the value of the reviews that were completed. The housekeepers, by the way did a super job. The only thing they sometimes couldn’t help with was turning off the big orange light near the bed. It was not obvious how to turn the light off. And at night it would have been nice to have it off, which sometimes we couldn’t arrange to have done. Overall, the hotel was wonderful. The facility was terrific and staff was phenomenal. And thank you again Daniel! You were beyond exceptional.

Balam butler service is the star of this property

We stayied during the post Xmas into NY period in a Beach Front Suite. Overall an excellent experience but that was mainly due to the Balam Butler service. Marlon and Jhovany were beyond exceptional curating every element of our stay and solving issues in moments. Spa was excellent, restaurants were hit and miss.

Amazing Family Friendly, Nature Inspired Vacation at the Fairmont Mayacoba

We spent 5 days at the Fairmont Mayacoba during Christmas week and had an amazing vacation. The resort is very clean, well staffed and everyone is extremely friendly. The resort is very big set amongst a nature preserve, but they provide quick transportation to and from the beach, your room, restaurants, golf, etc. by way of golf carts. In addition, all the Mayacoba hotels are connected via fresh water canals that creates an amazing, tranquil vibe and the complimentary boat rides to and from the different hotels and restaurants is very fun and a great experience. But, I'd have to say the best part of the trip was our private butlers, Fernanda Salgado and Javier Alcaron. They were so nice, pleasant and always quick to make themselves available whenever we needed anything. And, it felt like they were always one step ahead of us. I couldn't imagine spending another vacation there without them by our side. We were all kind of sad when we left to go home, because it felt like we were leaving family. But, we will definitely be back and will absolutely request their services next time. I'd say the only negative feedback is that the restaurants are very expensive, and very good, but not great for what your paying. Overall there are many restaurants to choose from amongst the 4 hotels connected, so I'd say just ask around for recommendations for the better ones. Overall, I couldn't recommend Fairmont Mayacoba more.

Not the 5 star experience we had hoped for, especially for the price….

The is a beautiful hotel but there were a few things we were disappointed in therefore we cannot give a 5 stars… When booking I was told the price wouldn’t change if I booked all inclusive up front or upon check in. Thankfully I had that email because that was not the case upon check in. The front desk ended up honoring the rate I was provided at an earlier date though which was great. Food was impeccable the first day. Not sure exactly what happened New Year’s Day, but rumor was there was a strike which left for total chaos New Year’s Day with a lack of service, or should I say nearly none - restaurants being closed, buffets only. Not what you expect when paying top dollar at a 5 star resort. There were so many kids, so if you’re there on your honeymoon like we were, you may want to think twice, especially in our situation where the adults only pool was closed. Lastly upon check out - of course resort fees that added up. Over all a very different, less appealing experience than our first hotel Secrets Moxche which was half the price, amazing all inclusive and overall just better for an adults vacation and honeymoon. Why I’m keeping this at 4 stars is, the hotel redeemed themselves within a day having the staff back at work, serviced for the most part resumed.
