Horrific Stay — Avoid Dreams Tulum by Hyatt

I stayed at Dreams Tulum by Hyatt this past weekend for my cousin’s wedding and it was one of the worst hotel experiences I’ve ever had. I only stayed because of the wedding — otherwise I would have run in the opposite direction. The property is a filthy time capsule that should be shut down for renovations. The grounds and public areas are unkempt, tired, and look like they haven’t been maintained since the early 1990s. My “ocean view” room was one of the only ones that looked somewhat updated — the rest are plainly neglected. The bed was as hard as a slab of concrete. There were bizarre sensor lights under the bed that switched on in the middle of the night and woke my daughter — completely unacceptable. Housekeeping was an embarrassment. Some days they never showed up unless I chased them down. When they finally bothered to clean, they left out basic items (no hand towels or washcloths), didn’t clean the floors or mirrors, and treated the room like an afterthought. The food across the resort was revolting. Everything tasted like slop and looked even worse. Several of us had upset stomachs for the entire stay. We live in Arizona and regularly eat authentic Mexican food — this was not even close. The so‑called Mexican restaurant served chips with ranch and chipotle mayo. In Mexico. Seriously. The hotel operates like a wedding factory — they cram multiple weddings in every day and host ceremonies and receptions right outside the guest rooms. Expect nonstop blasting wedding music and partying at all hours while you’re trying to sleep. It felt impossible to get any rest with ceremonies going on next door. This place is the bargain‑basement, carnival‑cruise‑line version of an all‑inclusive resort — loud, sloppy, and cheap. I’ve stayed at far better properties in Tulum. I would not return for any price and strongly advise anyone considering this hotel to save their money and stay somewhere that actually cares about cleanliness, food, noise control, and basic service.

    Great experience

Amazing resort - went for a wedding! Beautiful pool, beach, lovely staff, delicious food at world cafe (amazing fresh omelettes for breakfast), great gym with dumbbells up to 50kg, and other machines.

    A week in the sun

A lovely resort that was the perfect size. Excellent food, good variety of restaurants and kind, helpful staff. Lots of access to loungers. The best part was that we didn’t need to make reservations for the restaurants, first come, first served. I would be happy to return!

    Rated 3

We ordered a room for handicap and they gave us a room for handicap, first night I took a shower and found the drain was higher then the floor so the whole bathroom filled with water about an inch and wouldn’t go down the drain because the drain was too high so couldn’t use bathroom with handicap accessible had to use the main bathroom and in a wheelchair it was extremely difficult, the next day water still there and housekeeping never showed, water still there for another day got ahold of maintenance and knew there was nothing they could do with the drain but tried, they said they would be there at nine In the morning and again no show water still there next day housekeeping still no show, asked again about house keeping and still nothing, day 3 still using small bathroom extremely difficult to use and shower, house keeping showed up didn’t touch the handicap bathroom and kinda cleaned and made beds and still sand all over the floor from 3 days! 4th day no show from housekeeping and most of the water had evaporated by now and was able to use a few towels and dry the floor so I could at least use the toilet in there, day 5 housekeeping showed and had done a good job and cleaned everything and then that night they turned down our bed for first time! Day 6 no house keeping but could Use handicap bathroom toilet still showered in main bathroom In a cramped space very difficult! Now the good side was the wedding we went for was very nice and staff was very professional, all the meals were ok for me but I don’t like Mexican food so my menu was limited but the rest was very well made, all the wait staff at the restaurants were exceptional, the beaches and pools were very nice but the whole resort as a whole needs renovated! Seen som cats and some Iguanas and birds and for the most part was an ok trip except room! Not sure I would go back but did enjoy my time for the most part!

    Baffled and confused

20 years ago I’m sure this place was top of the line. It’s 2025 and this place is mediocre at best. The rooms are very dated. Several friends of mine had mold in their rooms, ac not working, loose toilet seats, and every single door was kicked in. The latch that is supposed to keep you safe was screwed in with drywall screws. A joke for safety! This place is a straight up WEDDING MILL! There’s 3 weddings a day!!!!! The area where they put the brides is in the main area above the loudest bar on the resort. She said it was so loud until 2am. How is that relaxing? My bride had a mouse in her room on her wedding day! After she finished her ceremony there was a line of another party waiting for their ceremony! The coordinator was MIA until 10 minutes before walking down the aisle. And she was setting up during cocktail hour when all the guests were there by herself! Guests were missing from the seating chart. It’s their job and duty to double check everything before it goes out! I am genuinely confused how this place is $500 a night!!!! 30 minutes down the road you have WAY better options. The food was terrible, the drinks were terrible. The meat was gray, the chicken was gray, nothing had any flavor. It was truly a shame. The workers there are very helpful and I want to personally shoutout Alfonso, as he went above and beyond for us. I am truly not sure how there are this many great reviews. If you have any standards - please steer clear of this hotel and go somewhere else. They make their money through weddings because people have no choice but to stay there for the couple. $2k for 4 nights when right next door was $900 and beyond gorgeous and we could’ve eaten out on the town. (Which we did anyway!!!!) That being said, my friends wedding was beautiful and regardless of my opinions, we were they only to support her and her husband! That’s love! Future brides — please visit and understand what you’re getting yourselves and friends/family into before you consider!!!!!!
