Extremely Happy With Post COVID-19 Travel

My wife and I brought our 4 kids (14 years to 21 years old) the last week of August to this resort and were pleasantly surprised with the care every employee took with wearing face masks and sanitizing. We felt extremely safe and felt this area of Mexico was taking the virus much more serious than the United States. The resort itself is very nice and well maintained. Not all the restaurants were open every day but we managed to eat at all of them (some more than once) with a little planning. Service was excellent everywhere we went. The buffet wasn't open at all but breakfast at World Cafe and room service were very good. The resort is maybe 1/3 full so we didn't feel over crowded at the pools or beach. Sea weed at the beach is present but was cleaned daily all day long. If you need a vacation don't hesitate to go to Dreams Tulum.

    Great location having trouble re-launching

We went on the trip already familiar with the AM Resorts brand but giving a measure of grace considering the relaunch of tourism, new safety protocols and reduction of hotel staff due to lowered occupancy during the Covid pandemic. This is our second trip to this resort in 5 years and among many in the AM Resorts brand. Arrival - Transfer via Amstar was smooth and prompt. Check-in was punctual and friendly as usual with a welcome drink offered. We arrived just after noon so lunch was at Sea Side and the rooms were ready earlier than usual check-in. We were also upgraded to Ocean Front. This was the first ever upgrade we have had with UVC in three plus years. Rooms - This was really a mixed bag. The upgraded rooms were nice and the view from the second floor was good but even better on the third floor. The problem was these rooms are directly over the activity pool and pool side grill so the noise was continuous until after 10 pm. This is especially true with the poolside live bands in the evenings or activities they moved from the main large square to the smaller outdoor venue near Coco Cafe. We asked for one of the rooms to be moved due to the noise. That was its own adventure due to the first new room was immediately next to obnoxious drunk family/friends who were part of the noise problem at the pool. They may have had some type of genetic abnormality that reduces your hearing as your blood alcohol level goes up because they conversationally yelled at each other in the pool. The hotel was kind enough to move us to a room in the same building but farther away and this room had multiple repaired holes in the bathroom and water stains on the walls, a horribly stained toilet, and no working hot water which turned into no water after dinner. We were moved again to a functional room. That ended the room saga but we still put up with a shower which must of had its own plumbing issue as the water predictably raised and lowered 20-30 degrees consistently every 20 seconds over a 5 minute shower. Our room safe was activated prior to our arrival and not reset. Three calls and physically telling the front desk never resolved this issue. Room cleaning service was completed everyday but there was inconsistent mini bar service. The sanitary conditions were well kept but I am not sure why they don't use fitted sheets or mattress pads on the beds. Toiletries were the standard fare which is nice. Ohh, and as a bonus, our room number must have been close to dine -in room service's number as we had quite a few people call us trying to order cheesecake and other items. So tempting to have fun with that but I behaved. Food - This is what really concerns me about Amstar or at least this resort. Understandably there were limited restaurants open but there was a significant reduction in variety especially for breakfast and lunch. I think the food presentation and cooking techniques were about as expected for this level of resort. It is obvious that the parent company has decided that this is a budget item they are willing to sacrifice. The beef was of minimal quality and cuts were cheap. I had one of the most awful steaks of any resort trip and it was of no fault of the cook staff. Fruits and pastries are limited in variety as well. Bar service was readily available. Coco Cafe is as good as usual. The service at the restaurants for dinner was good and occasionally excellent. The service at breakfast and lunch was never slow but occasionally missed as drinks not refilled on some days then refilled every time you turned around on others. We tipped consistently and I am not sure it made a difference. Entertainment - This is never a highlight of any Amstar resort in the last few years. They have some talented individuals that come through but don't come here for entertainment. Think of it as a bonus. I would not expect any bigger acts until resorts get back to a higher capacity. Facilities - Well cleaned and beautiful grounds. The resort is older but has a good Mexico charm to the walkways and buildings. The staff is doing a wonderful job of sanitizing and keeping the grounds clean. The beach has seaweed bloom like every resort in that part of Mexico. For some reason they allowed the seaweed to really pile up on the first couple of days while we were there then tackled it with consistency over the next 5 days where there was very little by the time we left and the crews were able to stay head of it. Just be prepared there will be a tractor with a giant rake and several people working on the seaweed while you are on the beach. The resort could make it an exercise class and have guests shovel for 30 minutes. You may laugh but literally one of the eco activities for kids was to have them pick up trash on the beach. I think this was a good idea as it taught them how much trash has an impact on the coast. Activities - There is very little going on while at the resort which we didn't mind but some might. However, there are some things that you can do off resort but not everything is open and most tourism activities are at reduced capacity. The Amstar team (I almost never use them onsite) was actually wonderful and very helpful with rates comparable to booking on your own. It was very easy to use them. Angie was a pro. UVC - We bought a trial package a few years ago and received another update presentation this trip. We worked with Luis who was one of the nicest VIP service people we encountered and really took care of most issues we encountered. The update process even had a tempting upgrade price proposal and was actually the lowest pressured sales presentation we have ever encountered. However, my concern for the decline of the facilities and food had me too concerned to commit to a longer term membership at this time. Overall - Most deficiencies for this resort are on the management and likely the parent company. The staff is wonderful and a pleasure. The beach is one of the best in the Yucatan aside from the summer seaweed issue. I don't think I would return to this resort until I was assured that food quality and selection is improved and that upgrades to the facilities assured me that the whole resort operated at a 4 star rating.

    Wedding for my daughter

Check in was rough, no one mentioned a $60 per dog per day additional charge and a one dog per room policy. We brought an 8 and 12 lb dog from the US. They only charged us for one and allowed two dogs in our room. The wedding day was wonderful and truly memorable! Cocktail reception was awesome and we were able to play our own playlists for dancing during the reception. The “top shelf” liquor includes crown royal, absolut and don julio reposado. One bar had Belvedere. Some of the preferred services and bars we paid for were closed the whole trip. Only one restaurant was open for breakfast and service was SLOW. We paid over $15k for the wedding and our wedding party travel. Feel a little jipped. Thanks Mark

    Dreams tulum

The most beautiful part of dreams tulum was the staff. Gigi, victor, and Ricky kept us laughing the entire trip as part of the entertainment team. Epitacio kept us well hydrated at the hotel bar and taught us plenty of Spanish. Gilberto kept our room stocked and overheard me saying to my companion that I prefer pacifico to corona. For the remainder of the trip he brought Pacifico instead! Arturo was my personal favorite. He was our server several nights and he took the most excellent care of us. He learned what we liked and didn’t like and he even had a special desert made for us on our last night that said “have a nice trip”. We were here for our anniversary and both of our birthdays (couple trip) and Stephanie at the front desk had roses put on our bed that spelled LOVE. It is a shame the government shut down the ruins and pyramids, but now we just have to come back!

    Disappointing Experience

The rooms are very old, the bathrooms are in very bad condition, the faucets were not working properly, the shower floor was pitted, the water tap was not working in the tub. A total renovation of the hotel is urgent. The TV set, the safe, and the hair dryer were not working. The service at breakfast is very slow and you are reluctantly served. Very limited menu. A total disappointment.
