Terrible Experience - Not worth the price! From a seasoned traveler.

We were super excited for this trip, and unfortunately ended up cutting it short because of how terrible our experience was. This was a very disappointing stay and absolutely not a 5-star experience in any way. The resort is extremely overpriced for what it offers and feels very outdated. I'll start with a few positivies, Felix, the manager was super helpful and the staff were super responsive and service was great. They work hard and deserve a shout out for that. The entertainment was also decent. They had a Santa on the beach on Christmas giving out gifts to the kids, that was super sweet. Aside from those things, I can't say anything positive about this resort. And we travel a lot and stay at mostly 5 star hotels, so my expectations were a bit high. I will say this was our first all-inclusive so perhaps that had something to do with it. Front he onset, our reservation was incorrect which we made directly with Hyatt. I spent 6 hours on phone with them and they said I needed to get to resort to resolve it. When we got to resort, it took over five hours at the front descausing us to lose an entire day of our trip. That alone set the tone for the stay. On our initial reservation, they had my son as a 3 year old but didn't charge for him. When we got to resort we got charged for him so $800 we hadn't anticipated. Charging that for a 3 year old for 4 days is crazy to me, who barely eat, so that was a HUGE waste of money. The room was dirty upon arrival — the sheets clearly hadn’t been changed, and the bathroom/shower was dingy and poorly maintained. The room was not as pictured. We got the swim up room, NOT WORTH THE PRICE. We were facing an abandoned building and the pool was FREEZING so we never even used it. The pull out couch was disgusting, caved in mattress and dust flew out as soon as we opened it. We never used it. Overall cleanliness was well below acceptable standards. The food was also terrible, with very limited quality. They had 7 restaurants, but we didn't like many of them other than the hibachi which was fine. I guess thats typical for all-inclusive's thought? The pools were another letdown, as they were super cold and not enjoyable at all. The water parks only allowed kids over 12 years of age to ride and the little play area for the babies was super cold so he never played there. There are time banks for when parents can go there so you can't just walk in and enjoy it. They wanted me to leave him there alone with them and that was not going to happen. There was more but overall I would not recommend this resort, especially given the price point. There are far better options elsewhere for the money. We went the week of Christmas and were there from Tues - Sat and were supposed to stay until Mon but cut the trip short.

Poorly maintained hotel , but nice location.

On arrival we were taken to our room which had a very strong smell of damp and mould I was too tired to complain after the long journey. The complaint was made in the morning and the room was changed with the use of a Bali bed on the beach for 2 days as compensation but unfortunately damage is done at this stage. Our son also cut his foot in the poorly maintained water slides area on damaged tiling. The food was OK but not premium . Entertainment was quite underwhelming . The Spa too expensive but cheaper alternatives available outside of the hotel. On leaving the hotel misplaced one of our cases which was later found and sent on separately but causing stress. We also spent some time offsite with family on pick up and drop off our loved ones were treated without respect and the same tone as the taxi drivers.

    Exceeded my Expectations!

Dreams Onyx exceeded my expectations. We have been to many all-inclusive resorts, and this was one of my best experiences. The preferred club adult pool was so relaxing, and the pool staff were very attentive and nice. Also, our butler, Arismendy, was the best we have ever had. He checked in with us several times a day, made dinner reservations for us, and was extremely knowledgeable about the resort. He made our stay very pleasant. The rooms were nice and clean. The food was what I expected at an all-inclusive resort, good not great.

Very Average - NOT WHAT YOU EXPECT

We stayed at the Onyx over the Christmas period and this hotel is not what you expect - from the photos it looks very spacious and clean - this is not the case at all ( SORRY) . The photos mis represent the property in my opinion the swimming pool areas is full of chairs if you are lucky enough to get one! Re the food -- the a la carte restaurants are all a waste of time ! food quality is not up to scratch and majority of all the food you are able to find at the main buffet, which is huge and has so many options to chose from!! but all the food is very average! Breakfast is the only real highlight! ( the only a la carte restaurant worth going to is the Steak house). As no restaurant reservations are taken, you need to be downstairs to wait for a table from 6pm to be able to dine at 7-7:30pm -- making reservation would be much easier!!! Cleanliness of the rooms is something that is missing in this hotel massively ( this could be just the cleaner we got), rooms cleaned to a sub standard - unable to use the balcony and bathtub due to dirt / bird poo / old cement. The staff do try hard in this hotel but all services were just a bit sub par!! I would suggest there are better resorts in Punta Cana to visit - VERY AVERAGE RESORT

Great family resort with a few minor hick-ups.

Accommodations: The room had plenty of room and was clean. The closet in our room had a strange setup with its sliding doors, requiring you to reach around the doors to get to your things because they didn’t slide far enough. The plumbing in the shower made it difficult to capture an acceptable water temperature setting. Staff: Almost all of the staff we contacted were friendly and helpful. One of our family members did run into a rude staff member near the sand volleyball court, who felt it was ok to be rude and yell at guests because of a stray volleyball. Food: The buffet food, I would give 7 of 10. Just too much of the same thing day after day. It was somewhat difficult to find things due to the layout. There was one meal, when most every bread option was dried out and hard. Most of the restaurants had good food and good service. The exception was the Blue Dolphin Cafe. The service was slow, the spinach and artichoke dip was inedible and served with clumps of cheese in a watery mix of I don’t know what…they were sent back. It took over an hour to get our meals after placing our orders and the kitchen doesn’t come close to keeping up with the number of patrons. Activities/Shows: There’s plenty to do the resort. The kids seem to enjoy themselves, there’s plenty of pool space for everyone, and shows of some sort every night. The beach area is well kept and great for swimming and water sports.
