just a get away with friends
visited dreams back in nov.. resort was clean but defintly showed its age..i recalled being there 20 years ago when it was the royal maeva.. buffets where to repetative, same every day.. dinning rooms where neve rbusy, food quality was good. silly that men had to have shoes and pants on in the Italian, but women could sit there in bathing suits. they had top shelf liquor but you ahd to ask as it was hidden. pool seating was brutal, too many unattended chairs, wild kids, family resort, gone next weather was fabulous.. theme and nightlife was lame..golf course overrates over priced and over played.. put some water on it.. terriable sports coverage ,internet was weak. no wonder it was free. next time I would go next door.. adults only secrets.
Plenty of room to improve - Both Dreams AND Apple Vacations
Where do I start. Used Apple Vacations and booked and Apple resort.. Dreams is part of the Apple family. Had stayed at Secrets Huatulco before. After the whining I will provide some basics. Trip down was OK. Check-in went fast. Went to a Tropical View room. Had a wonderful view of the restaurant next door - and they had a wonderful view of our balcony. No sitting outside. Asked where to eat that night and was sent to a restaurant closed. Nice walk. Spent way too much time at the concierge desk and was given way too much incorrect information. They didn't have a clue. Asked to speak to a supervisor - sat there for 2 hours and they came back and stated they couldn't find one. At least I had a view and a drink. MUCH better view than from the room. So now you know the hassle - which had never had on ten other trips to Apple resorts. Also don't bother buying Preferred Perks on Apple flights - it was a nightmare at the airport in Huatulco. No preferred perks that we paid for - once the rep got you off the bus there was NOBODY at check-in with Apple. No preferred perks check-in line. It was a mess. OK - Rooms - Nice and clean. Good sized. Cleaned and fridge refilled daily. Great service from maids. The view, as stated above was anything but tropical. 2nd floor staring right into the restaurant. Balcony on the small side. Food - I've had much better. There seemed to be no consistency at any of the places to eat. Daily listing of events and what places open to eat was very consistent - it was never correct. Bars - Thank God for the bars!!!!!!! Cold beer or a mixed drink can make things much better. They did consistently ran out of top shelf brands. Drinks varied from one bar to another. Beer didn't. Beach/pools. Nice beach and swimming area. Adult pool was packed daily and their kids ran the other pool. The "pool police" did had out tickets if you left your chairs - with no consistency. The chairs next to use with towels and a book empty three hours and no "ticket". I go to the restroom and returned 10 minutes latter to a note on my chair!!!!! REALLY!!!!!!!!!! I did keep the note and now have it framed in our Hall of Shame. Would I go back? Only if they improve. Would I use Apple Vacations or Funjet which have teamed up? Not sure. Have had communications with them and again the inconsistency is mind boggling. Very unprofessional.
Consistent Service: AMAZING
This is my second review of this hotel, I had such an amazing second vacation that I really wanted to write again: Management of this hotel seems to listen very well to customers, I wrote about 2 things that could be improved and they addressed them!!! - new furniture at the lobby and preferred club -a la carte option for lunch besides the buffet thank you for listening, Adrian Borhoquez, concierge team and management. thank you for always addressing my special requests in my previous visits, I even got a room upgrade, something I had never been given, even though I am a true fan of AMResorts. It feels really great to be appreciated as repeat guests. We like Dreams Huatulco so much, we have already booked to spend New Years with you AGAIN :) The cost of Dreams Playa Mujeres, which is a newer, bigger and with a waterpark and dolphins was the same but we chose Dreams Huatulco for the following: -The staff - they are the best, I really hope they are doing well in these days of pandemic and I hope to see you all on December. - The Food, really good at all restaurants - The weather, simply the best, very hot! - The beach, great location and swimable - The bars - they even have Mezcaleria, one of my favorites I promise to write down and/or memorize the names of all employees and write about them on my third review See you soon!
Another Great Visit to Dreams Huatulco
This was our second consecutive year at Dreams and it was just enjoyable as our other visit. The location is beautiful: on Tangolunda Bay and it does not feel at all crowded because it is isolated from other nearby resorts. There is a vacation club and you will get a short sales pitch upon arrival. They do take "no" for an answer, so it isn't too oppressive-you can get through it quickly and painlessly. There are plenty of available activities: volleyball-pool and beach; water aerobics; treasure hunts, bingo, kids' club, yoga; archery. You can do as much or as little as you wish. The staff were great. There is wildlife around: iguanas are easily found; chachalacas-a loud rooster-like bird-can be seen and heard. Not to mention the possibility of seeing turtles, rays, dolphins and whales right from the beach. Also, a man comes by once a week or so with an aguililla-some sort of hawk-to chase the birds around so they don't get too comfortable around the food serving areas. As far as the meals, they were great. The buffet had so many options, you're bound to find something you like. The seafood is the best, especially the grilled fish-whatever the catch of the day is-and the ceviche and seafood cocktail. The only a la carte at which we ate was the Mexican restaurant, El Patio. As great as the food was, the staff is what really made it memorable. Julio is the boss, the maître d', at El Patio. He, along with Hugo, Isaac and Fausto turned what was already a great meal into something unforgettable. They made Spanish Coffee for us, with the flaming brandy being poured back and forth; it's really something to see. I'd also like to single out Victor, Freddy, Enerio, Ariana, Feliciana, Nataly and Lida from the Buffet restaurant. They treated us so well and did everything they could to make our meals enjoyable. Lida acknowledged and greeted my 9 year old from across the room one evening; it made her day. Dreams is unusual in that no coupons or reservations are needed for the a la carte restaurants. Just show up. Some times are more crowded than others. Big crowds can be easily avoided by going early or late. Appropriate dress is required and enforced. No children in the Italian restaurant. Tours can easily be set up in the lobby or with boat captains on the beach. Taxis can be hailed for you by the staff in the hotel lobby. This is no fault of Dreams, but we did encounter jejenes, the biting gnats this year. I think it was just because of a longer wet season this year-the mountains to the east were unusually green for late December when we flew in. Again, not the fault of the hotel. We hope to return next Winter. We had a wonderful visit.
We stayed at the resort from Match 12-21. We were flying with West-jet Vacations. Prior to going to the resort I asked if there were hand wash stations with sanitizer. I had a response that there were washrooms to wash my hands. We brought our own. Check in was quick with one issue, they couldn't put us in the same area of the hotel as my parents. We were travelling with seniors and found out at check in they would be in the adult only section. We were travelling with my 12 year old and this would not work as they require assistance with daily things. I then had to upgrade to the preferred club for $50.00 USD per day per room so we could be in the same building. I am not sure how this made any difference as the preferred lounge was far away and no-one in the lounge was even preferred club. On the beach there was an area for preferred club guests that were also not preferred club guests. Really this was a waist of money. There was no difference besides that except we were now in the same building. The day after arriving to the hotel the Canadian government requested its citizens come home and began to talk about closing their borders. I immediately went to speak with the WestJet rep. He told me no that there was nothing like this going on. He told me if West jet was wanting to find me they would get ahold of me. Even find me on the beach. There was no change to our departure. Period. I felt stupid for asking. So I guess we would be staying for two weeks then as he is the rep? The wifi was spotty so you really have to rely on CNN and Canada is only a small part on there. I began getting panicked calls from family saying get home. I went back to the West jet rep. Again he laughed and said no. I realized at this time I had to figure this out myself. The restaurants began to close so you had very limited options to eat. The Mexican was not something we could find anything to eat at and my daughter couldn't eat at the Italian as it was Adults only. So food becomes difficult to find at an all inclusive? We had to take 2 taxis to town or eat or go across the street on our own dimes. Not something I have seen at Dreams before. I might add I have stayed at Dreams 11 times prior to this in Mexico and have never had any issues. So from panic to leaving to find food. The restaurants during the day will not allow men in wearing anything but a full shirt. This again is ridiculous and I have been to many resorts that have a beach or snack bar, which is what we were eating in before they shut it down. They require you to go back to your room and change. To a full shirt. The food in at the buffets at lunch (as they closed it for dinner) was poor. Pre cooked hotdogs, and hamburgers, some other very unappetizing things and every day, the same. No pasta station, no sandwich station, a few little lettuce things. No bread. One day we did see someone come around with A dinner roll? On Tuesday the staff started serving the buffet. It then reminded me of a cafeteria with really bad food that I felt guilty asking for a bigger serving of. The shows were non existent or cancelled and some game would take place instead. The Mexican people really believed the virus didn't live in Mexico. They actually said this to me. They told me that the hand sanitized was organic. I believe it was totally water. Finally my agent from home was able to get us a flight home. I was told I would not be getting a refund for the time un-used or the lack of services offered to us while here. The hotel was sending all staff home I heard there was 40 of us there the last couple of days. The pool is a towel game. They are all full by 7 am. Even when the hotel is almost empty. Then you see there is 2 full pools completely empty but they are adults only pools? We can't use them because we have a 12 year old with us. So there is 3 people who have an entire pool to themselves and we have our towels sitting on the pool deck as there is nowhere to sit. I thought the adults only was Secrets. Dreams is a family resort? I am appalled that we paid for something upfront and they closed the services to people still there. I am also very upset with the lack of support provided by West jet. I still have never been contacted by West jet to say go home. Or how to get there. This was the most stressful week of our lives and no-one offered any support or assistance. I waited for nearly 6 hours on my phone and used my cell phone trying to get things arranged and can't imagine what my bill will look like for that. No assistance. I totally get that this must have been stressful to everyone but we are relying on our rep and resort to guide us through this. Nope not once! No support, no service and stuck in another country. Thank god we made it home. This would have to be the worst trip of I have ever been on. I don't think I ever want to visit another Dreams again after this. I do feel sad for the workers of the resort as you could see the fear and dread on their faces knowing they would be going home too. They were amazing kind people. My issue is with the Company who directs what happens at Dreams in these situations and West jet.
