  Average stay, amazing Beach

  We've been to Mexico 14 times at this resort chain and have always had a 4 1/2 to 5 star experience. With this resort we are giving an overall rating of only 3 out of 5 stars, not likely to return. Read on for detailed info. Best feature - the endless sandy beach and magnificent surf (not swimmable), pelicans and dolphins Check-in was a bit rocky. We booked a preferred room. The check-in time is 3pm but even though we arrived at 3:30 our room was not ready until 4:45. There was perhaps a mix-up with the room registration: the concierge seemed confused about which building our room was to be in, which seemed to be part of the delay. The wifi access didn't work until the next day and when we gave the room# at the restaurant our first night the name that came up was not ours. In the end the room was very nice, quiet and comfortable. Food - overall just ok but often underwhelming even though we aren't usually overly picky. We found the menu selections limited and the quality of food ranged from good to mediocre, or just not great at all. (Not the same quality or range we're used to at Secrets or Secrets/ Dreams combo resorts where usually stay.) Food frequently came out lukewarm, rarely hot and of a quality that seemed pre-prepared and re-heated rather than freshly made to order. The outdoor buffet events had some of the better meals we enjoyed. Preferred Club - one of the best features of the resort. The PC lounge was very comfortable and has a great atmosphere. Nice selections for a quick breakfast, lunch and dinner but best if you get it when its freshly set out. Fantastic bar service, Gilberto and his colleagues very friendly, cheerful and attentive. PC pool also had very good service (kudos to Hernan and Oscar) and great view of the beach/ocean. Love the pool-loungers, pool was a very comfortable temperature. Restaurants El Patio, arrived right at 5:30 opening so we're the first people seated. Unfortunately chips guac and salsa were never offered, which we found odd (and disappointing) given it is the resort's Mexican restaurant. Instead we were given dinner rolls. Food was decent and served hot. We were in & out within an hour. Sever Antonio provided good service. Oceana - lunch: overall was good, Great service and food seemed fresh. Tuna burger was very good, Fish tacos were lacking flavor and sauce, but were hot and fresh. Oceana - dinner - unfortunately a very disappointing experience. Service staff seemed disorganized and we never actually got our full order. They were slow to bring us water and to take our order. Our appetizer came incomplete. After waiting an hour for our soup which never came, we left to have dinner somewhere else. Portofino - Jose our server was excellent. The food was disappointing, it was cold or lukewarm at best, tasted like it had been served from an stale buffet and was not fresh. Meraki - oh dear! Disorganized chaos! As a party of two, we were seated at a table that would seat six while other large groups were seated at small tables and the lineup to be seated grew. The people seated before us didn't even get water or their order taken by the time we had finished our appetizers. My husband and I ordered the same appetizer, his came hot, mine was cold. My tuna filet was lukewarm and a bit tough. At one point the manager actually came out and was bussing tables. Very odd experience. Barefoot grille - After our a la carte restaurant experiences we really wanted to like this but were disappointed. The menu is confusing. Chips and salsa not on the menu board. We ordered a burger, the accompanying side of fries was dismally small so we ordered a separate plate of fries and got a small handful. They serve a burger with an onion ring but we weren't able to order a side of onion rings. The gyro was surprisingly small and no side of fries. If you love a gooey pile of molten cheese have the 4 cheese pizza. Not the best. Resort overall - well kept, clean, greenery will be lovely once it grows in more. Resort is nice looking but for being only 2 years ago it needs some TLC. Restaurant decor is very nice. Lazy river was freezing! We chose not to go in. Directional signage is not great - Washrooms were hard to find, had to ask staff for directions. Washroom upkeep hit and miss, consistently had soap dispensers or paper towel dispensers not working (small things that matter to me). Communication on resort events could have been better. We found the app to have incomplete information on what it was going on each day. A long way from the city, if you want a quiet out of the way destination this is a great location. If you want to be in Mazatlan then budget for 1200 Peso return cab fare and 40 minutes each way.

  Océana restaurant

  Great service. Food was excellent. We had the Fernando as our server and he was excellent. This place opens earlier than the main buffet and the plates are always well presented, the right size and properly seasoned.

  We were a group of 12, PedroPablo did a great job to juggle the three biggest tables in the restaurant and going above and beyond in keeping all our orders, food and drinks coming.

  The rooms were spacious and have a wonderful view, the service and professionalism of the staff was impeccable. They really went out of their way to accommodate our needs. Wonderful experience!
