TLDR: calm adults only resort with exceptional staff, great beach and tasty food
Wonderful week (Jan 24-31) with friends at Catalonia Royal Tulum. The Staff The staff were a real highlight of the resort; always friendly with a smile and a hola etc. I would recommend learning a bit of Spanish if you wish to chat more as the resort is more Spanish forward. The star standouts for me were: -Jonathan at the pool bar: in addition to top quality drinks, he was excellent at creating a fun atmosphere, telling stories, suggesting drinks, and chatting to patrons in several languages. On one colder day he even went to get coffees from the tequila bar for us. If it was a 360 bar or there were steps in so people didn’t need to fully get in the pool, this bar would be packed any time he’s working. -Quetzabel at the buffet host stand is a compete ray of sunshine and would be the best ambassador for the resort. She was always so sweet and made an effort to greet and connect with everyone. She makes what could be a perfunctory role become a highlight of each day. -On our last day, we also had José as our buffet waiter and he made a great impression by chatting with us and providing attentive service. The Food Food at buffet and à la cartes was very good overall. The buffet options were similar each day, but there were a few rotating options and always lots to choose from. As a bit of a foodie, I wasn’t wowed, but had lots of quality food. Overall, more attention to the seasoning would make a huge difference, but that’s a minor suggestion. My personal favourite restaurants were the Mexican (tuna tostada and coffee with fruit and spices) and Rauxa (tuna tartare and short rib). For Rauxa, there is a circus style show (830ish) but the music is quite loud, so I wouldn’t plan to talk much before or after. Drinks were very inconsistent and seemed to be entirely bartender -dependant. Jonathan in the pool bar was by far the best and we would often travel from other areas to get his excellent margaritas and caipirinhas. Cappuccinos were mostly great at both bars. We were travelling with a vegetarian and we were disappointed in the severe lack of plant proteins (no tofu, soy, tempeh, ‘beyond’ meat etc - only the snack bar even had a veggie burger). This was flagged to guest services but was not accommodated except at the steakhouse where they hustled after we reiterated the need to get a veggie burger. Otherwise there would have been no main available, just some veggie sides. With the issues we experienced, I wouldn’t recommend this resort to people with dietary needs and I would also worry about the labelling and knowledge for those with allergies. The Resort Small resort with a one path in and out layout making it easy to find things. The advertised juice bar no longer exists, but juices and infused waters are available at the bar. Property is very well kept and has a more organic jungle to beach vibe that we enjoyed. The Beach This is the best beach I’ve been to in the area- soft sand and clear refreshing water. There are a few large rocks/shelves further in the water, but really only an issue if jumping in waves. There were also schools of lovely silvery fish that would occasionally swim by or circle. The towels were supposed to be replaced at turn down but we rarely found this happened as they often came early (5-7pm) while we were still out or getting ready for dinner. If this was later or the pool towel station was refilled more frequently , that would be great. The towels could also be exchanged in the lobby, but that wasn’t the most convenient since it’s at the opposite end of the resort. Activities We didn’t participate in the poolside activities, but greatly enjoyed the rock show and the Rauxa acrobats. The resort is on the quiet side, so if you are looking for a party, I’d go elsewhere. The gym is well equipped. We used the spa shower facilities as we had a late flight after checkout but this was difficult to schedule despite it not being busy.

Just OK
We stayed Jan 28 - Feb 4. When we arrived in the afternoon and the power was out. Apparently, it had been out all day. Which is fine, but the rooms are very dark as the balconies are jungle view only. Luckily about an hour or so after we arrived it came back on. We had the deluxe privilege room, and it was a good, clean, basic room. There were no dresser or drawers so not a lot of space to store your stuff, but there were small shelves. We enjoy having the turn down service, which they have at this hotel and they also replace your beach towels at this time so you don't need to go to a towel hut or anything. The BLoved restaurant has a great atmosphere and view, however the menu is a bit odd, portions are small and service is extremely slow. After the first few days we tried the buffet and much preferred the food and service, and there is a great view of the beach and ocean from there as well, so we ate there for breakfast for the remainder of our trip. The a la carte snack bar was decent for lunch but we mostly ate lunch at the buffet as some days they had fresh, authentic tacos for lunch and that was our favorite thing we ate. All of the a la carte's for dinner were also good, but again the Mexican was our favorite. Definitely eat at Rauxa and watch the show if you can. They were also easy to book reservations even last minute. However, I do feel like every all-inclusive should still have a dinner buffet option which this one does not. The lobby is large and nice atmosphere for having a drink before dinner, the espresso martini there was my favorite. One thing I would say about the rest of the drinks whether at the beach, pool, etc., they don't garnish with fresh fruit - such as pineapple with a pina colada or an orange with Aperol spritz which is always a nice touch. Also, no straws which I understand but it's hard to drink those slushie drinks without one so I used the one from my Owala water bottle. Drink service at the beach and pool was prompt! My fiance enjoyed the gym every morning as well as the sauna in the spa which you do have to book but was free with a privilege room. We enjoyed walking the scenic jungle pathway every day and seeing all of the coatis. It is very uneven ground so just be aware of that if any mobility issues. The sand and water at the beach were beautiful, but it can be crowded. We had use of the privilege section but there weren't as many chairs as the regular section (there were tons there) and it isn't being monitored, so we did try to get there early to get those privilege chairs. However, you can move the chairs wherever you like. There is a section of VIP chairs that is being essentially wasted as not many people seem to be VIP and they do monitor that area. The pool is large, nice, and clean with lots of chairs. This is a smaller resort. All in all, I hate to complain about so many things about this resort but this is not the usual experience we are used to. It is a good resort, although I would not choose to return as there are many others out there to try. If you are on the fence about it, it wouldn't hurt to give it a try! I would just take note if the things I mentioned in this review are also important to you as well.

Stunning Beach , Sand and Water!
Just checked out of this resort Jan / 2026. Honest , non bias review … Beach is absolutely stunning!! 5 stars White sand , turquoise water ! Not overcrowded . Always easy to find a lounge chair! They allow you to place anywhere you want! Con: neighboring properties (if you like to walk the beach ) are pretty run down or just public beach restaurants . (Not glamorous) Pool is beautiful. Great gym , loved the spa too Staff were very nice and welcoming although service slow at times . Rooms were just ok , bit damp smelling and walls are thin. Did not appreciate hearing the happy humpers next door 24/7 :0 Like seriously 😐 Was very clean tho , views are into the jungle (no water or sun views) so rooms quite dark . If you stay in building 1 you are close to lobby but further from beach . If you stay in building 5 you are further from lobby but closer to beach and pool . Keep in mind no elevators and 3 levels so book 1st floor if you have mobility issues! Food was incredible and yes reservations required which didn’t bother us at all. I’m laughing at those who thought needing resos was an inconvenience. Go to the buffet then . Be sure when you book you have access to BLoved . Beautiful breakfast / lunch restaurant overlooking the beach! (See pic!) The biggest negative and reason I won’t be back : Too many ignorant European smokers that line the only path through the resort with disgusting smoke and cigarette butts , zero consideration for others and often smoked right on the beach and around the pools . I actually had to stop a woman from France from continually burying her cigarette butts in the sand!!! Absolutely no consideration for those around them. There are designated smoking areas but staff do not seem interested in enforcing them. For this reason I will not be back , it does not feel like a non smoking resort (smoking everywhere was disgusting!) and it makes me sad because I absolutely loved everything else!! Staff needs to do a better job enforcing the smoking rules. Period.

What a beautiful experience
I have been wanting to stay at this resort for years. My husband always wanted to go to other Adults Only resorts that were much more expensive, so we had passed on this resort. We have been going to this part of Mexico for 30 years now. We have stayed at the other 2 Catalonias in the past when we had our young son and more on a budget. We have ALWAYS had a wonderful stay. That's why I wanted to try this resort but was overruled by my husband. I finally got my husband to reluctantly try this resort, and he absolutely was blown away. The beach is the most beautiful beach in the RM. The restaurants were all wonderful, especially the steak house. We did do the Privilege room so we're were able to eat at the Beloved. The Beloved service was soooooo slow!!! That is my only complaint about the restaurants. All the staff is very friendly and happy. Some of the English spoken at this resort is not very well. Some orders were lost in translation, but easily rectified. Overall the staff is wonderful. I had a wonderful spa treatment. The price was very reasonable. 204 .00 USD for a body scrub, massage, and facial. Almost a 2 hour treatment. Definitely worth it. Now we have stayed at a few more expensive resorts that were double what we paid here and left disappointed with the food and service. The value at this resort for the food and beautiful beach experience is unmatched. If you're looking for a more luxurious room amenities is the big major difference of why this resort is probably less money. Our room was very clean, comfortable and perfectly fine for a basic hotel room. We had the Privilege Deluxe. There is no jacuzzi or hot tub like other Adults Only. I'm surprised there are no rooms with that option. We had the jacuzzi at the Catalonia Maroma and it was amazing. So we spent all our time on the beach and bars instead. The pool and beach had plenty of lounge chairs and you never had to fight for a lounge chair. I stayed at the expensive resorts and had to steak out your chairs early or you didn't get one. This was NEVER a problem at any of the Catalonia resorts. This resort is just a beautiful, relaxing, slow paced , very romantic resort. There is no butler or concierge people. But we were able to always make dinner reservations and get the time we wanted. No limits on restaurants. You can eat in any as many times as you like. The Japanese is absolutely breathtaking and romantic. Its outside by the cenote. The steak house and Italian were also wonderful. I recommend this resort highly. The Privilege package is recommended because you can get your drinks at the Beloved bar instead of the pool bar. Their drinks are better than the pool bar. We never ate at the buffet because it was pretty busy and there was always a waiting line. The Beloved was nice to be able to eat and skip the buffet. This resort does miss on some small details. Their app to make reservations does not work if you made your reservation stay on a third party website. So all dinner reservations had to be made by the front desk. We called to have our luggage picked up on departure day and they never came. Room service didn't pick up phone on the only day we tried. The front desk had to put order in and it was wrong. But none of that will stop us from returning.
