Great all inclusive resort that can be made even better

We had a great time staying here as a family of all adults. We had a duplex with a plunge pool and a sun terrace. Stayed here before a number of years ago (pre-covid) in a different room category. Giving them 5-stars, considering that it is an all-inclusive in the DR (not St Barth’s or Bermuda :), although there are some areas that can be easily improved. More on that below, but first - the “pluses”. - The resort and its facilities are absolutely gorgeous! Rooms very comfortable, quiet, amazing balconies, pools clean and well-maintained. Landscaping is outstanding - blooms, fruits, whimsical paths and sculptures - paradise! Everything is well maintained and spotless. Clearing staff does an amazing job! - The beach is to die for! Very peaceful on the adult side, beautiful clear ocean, beachside bars and restaurants. Golf carts rides to the beach was a nice touch, really helped with the elderly in our group. - Restaurants plentiful and food is generally very good. No trouble getting reservations at the places we wanted to go to, even on short notice. Wines, even house wines that require no extra pay, were very good. - Nightly entertainment was pretty good and varied - a combination of jazz, singers and, later in the night, shows. - Staff is generally genuinely friendly and happy to help. Now for the areas that could be improved. If that is done, this resort can rise to the level of Ritz, St Regis and Sandals! - Service should be more consistent. And that comes from a group that tips consistently and generously! It shouldn’t take 2h and a reminder to get extra water delivered to the room :). Wait staff in the non-buffet restaurants should not be reminded to refill water, wine, bring coffee, etc (many wait staff we had was outstanding and very attentive, others seem to be more interested in chatting among themselves in the back and setting up the tables for the morning :). Wait staff at the Peruvian restaurant Siwichi was downright unfriendly. - Food in the restaurants on the adult side should be more consistent. We had some outstanding dishes and some pathetic ones in the same restaurant on the same night :) In the Asian restaurant, broth pork soup was to die for, the best I ever had outside of Japan; tempura was great, but sushi sampler was a joke - rice ball with a spit of “something” in the middle :), Siwichi food was good and fresh, but not remarkable - I remember that restaurant being much better last time we were at Catalonia. Beloved had outstanding appetizers, but just ok main dishes. Finally, we tried the “family side” buffet restaurant, and there was a lot of choice, but a lot of overtired food that just wasn’t fresh. One person in our group immediately got an upset stomach:) Finally - it should not be difficult to get fresh towels on the beach! We had 1 beach/pool towel per room and had to log them to the beach, where we could only exchange wet towels for dry ones, but NOT get extra towels :) Resorts generally set guests up with two towels per guest and do it on the beach. If there were a system for getting extra towels, no one could explain that to us :) Overall, this is a great resort which, with a little management attention, could be made into a real star!!

Great stay at the Catalonia Royal La Romana!

Stayed at the Catalonia Royal La Romana the week of May 11 to May 18. This was my 6th visit the Dominican Republic, the first time in La Romana. I've stayed in Punta Cana 5 times but always had my eye on La Romana and decided to change it up this time, and I'm glad I did! First off the beach is incredible! So much better then Bavaro beach! Absolutely no seaweed at all and the water is clear. White sand and palm trees along the beach. There are lots of palapas and are all taken by 7:30am - so make sure you're at the beach to snag one by at least 7:00am. Surprisingly the main pool you could go there at 9:00am and there were still lots of chairs available. My guess is because the beach is so nice... The resort is gorgeous. Lush greenery and more palm trees everywhere. One of the nicest walking resorts I've been to. The resort is well maintained and the rooms are nice and clean. One thing that stood out was how friendly all the resort workers were - they all greet you enthusiastically. Usually by the 6th day on vacation at a resort I'm ready to go home, but this time I wished I had booked a longer stay as I didn't want to leave. I believe the friendliness of the staff was the reason. Food was overall very good. The breakfast place by the beach is great - having breakfast right beside the ocean is the best way to start your day! The Eggs Benedict and Rancher breakfast are very good. I tried the traditional Domican breakfast and it was amazing. I only did one a la carte at the Mediterranean restaurant and it was very good as well. I ate dinner mostly at the buffet as they had a decent variety and there was ways something I could find that I liked. Disregard the negative comments about the food from other reviews, either these people complain for the sake of complaining or they are expecting a fine dining experience - remember this is an all- inclusive resort. If you are considering this resort you won't be disappointed. Book it!

    Very spanish

We loved this hotel overall and would go back but think mainly for the beach as it's far superior to punta cana. The hotel and sister hotels very quirky and quite instagramable. The rooms are nice and pools clean. The evening entertainment was good and loved the layout with the a la carte surrounding the entertainment area so you can view whilst you watch. For us the food was lacking in comparison to PC and specifically secrets Royal beach. Also, we noted considerably less English speaking guests aswell as staf incuding entertainment team. Overall its very much more geared to Spanish guests. So if u speak Spanish...maybe 4.5stars. I would however recommend the hotel:)

    A holiday to remember

I can see why this hotel is 5 stars, its the little details, all the staff will say hello to you, yes there are a few that dont speak good English but they will always try and help, they even put their "catalonia" logo in their smoking sand every morning. The beach is about a 7 minute walk from reception area and is beautiful but people are not wrong when they say you have to get up at 6am to reserve a decent spot. We had heard of other places in the dominican having serious seaweed issues and there were zero here. We went to see the fish in the corals which was wonderful. Food at the Peruvian restaurant was incredible. Only downside is if you dont book somewhere to eat for the night you will end up just getting room service with a very limited menu. We did find a lot of things out later on in the holiday as no one explained anything except where the beach was, we weren't sure on what services we could use or which part of the beach to use etc. We got some form of bug which had us being sick for 3 days and had no idea they had medical supplies at the shop which would've really helped. The room was incredible, slight issue with water pressure but nothing big and everything was clean. We wanted to take Esther the cleaning lady home with us, she was just a vibe. So welcoming and lovely and even came to say goodbye when we left. Another staff shout out is for the woman who works on the "non adults" side at the beach bar, she was always happy to see us and exclaimed "palm beach!" (My drink of choice) every time we went up and was full of smiles. The waitress at the twist bar in reception was also dancing around during the entertainment and added a nice layer of entertainment at the same time. Overall we had an excellent time and we will definitely be back. The friendly staff counteract the rude guests and the scenery is just incredible.
