Amazing Holiday!
I would like to say that this Resort was absolutely amazing. Tasty food, very friendly staff and beautiful Beach and lots of animals around the resort. They do have 2 Monkeys mom and baby. They are very friendly and baby will climb on you too. There is bad seaweed issue in Caribbean since 2016, It was not bad at all at end of the September. This resort doing absolutely fantastic job with cleaning beach off sea weed. They start early in the morning and by around 11am beach is beautiful, ready for you to enjoy. I do recommend to pay little extra and update your stay to Privilege wrist band. You will get your room updated, access to better side of the beach and access to amazing Ala Carte beachfront restaurant with fantastic food. I must say that if you give little tip, staff will definitely show you that they appreciate it by little extras ;-) We didn't had to say anything at all and when we finished our drinks, another ones was on the way. They will bring it for you right on beach. We being looked after like that every day. Our room was absolutely spotless. I had some bad experience on my previous holidays with rooms, so I took with me some disinfectants (that's my OCD LoL...) I didn't had to use it at all. Only problem in this resort is Mosquitos. Lots of them. You need repellent. And my advice is to take with you Plug-in UVA Light Mosquito Catcher. Thank me later.. LoL. I Highly recommend this beautiful Resort. We had AMAZING holiday.

Mediocre at best
This was our fourth trip to Catalonia Playa Maroma, but it will unfortunately be our last. While the stunning beach and lush, green grounds remain the resort's strongest assets, the overall experience has deteriorated significantly since our last visit three years ago. The "refreshed" rooms are a major disappointment and have taken on the feel of a basic motel. The lack of functional storage is baffling—there isn't a single drawer or sliding door for belongings. To make matters worse, the bedding is subpar; only one thin blanket was provided for two occupants, and the pillows felt sweaty, giving the impression they are rarely, if ever, properly washed. The culinary decline is equally notable. The buffet has been stripped of previous staples like steak and salmon, leaving only very basic, repetitive offerings. Even simple requests, like a cheese quesadilla, are now impossible to fulfill. While no single issue is critical on its own, the resort is not cheap. At its current price point, the quality of the accommodations and dining simply no longer justifies the cost. It is disheartening to see a long-time favorite slip so far into mediocrity.

Beautiful resort - could use some improvement
My husband and I stayed 5 nights in November, 2025 at Catalonia Playa Maroma. We travelled from western Canada and are English speaking. We have travelled to this area of Mexico a handful of times in the past and most recently to Catalonia Grand Costa Mujeres in March 2025. I was torn between rating this resort 3 or 4 stars and would say 3.5 ⭐️. Room: we booked a superior privileged room. Initially we were in building 6 however when we arrived our room was 25.5 degrees Celsius with the air conditioning running on full blast and temp set to 21. We inquired about it and they sent the maintenance person to check it and he said it was working just fine but I didn’t feel any cold air blowing from the A/C. We went for supper and when we returned to our room later that evening the temperature had not dropped at all so we requested to move rooms which they accommodated. We were then placed in building 5. This room was also set to 21 and was still warm at 23.5, but better. For our entire 5 night stay the air conditioner ran on full blast and stayed around 23.5. The ceiling fan helped but the a/c system here definitely needs work as they do not adequately keep the rooms cool. Another complaint we had was the rain shower head in the shower had next to no water pressure. Thankfully there was a separate handheld shower head that had better pressure and was the only thing that rinsed the shampoo and conditioner from my hair. We did not have any issues with having hot water though which I’ve read complaints about in other reviews. We had a king bed that was pretty firm and not our preference comfort wise, but it also wouldn’t be a deal breaker. The decor was very basic and dated. We aren’t ones to be overly concerned about decor however so that didn’t bother us. On the positive, the room was very clean and it was quiet! Grounds: beautiful, lush and tropical. Very clean. Lots of local wildlife. The buildings themselves do show their age. Food: The breakfast options were beloved (if you are privileged) which was very good and has a beautiful view or the main buffet. We ate most of our breakfasts at beloved and for that alone I would say privileged is definitely worth it. I didn’t love the buffet for breakfast, but it wasn’t terrible either. Lunch is the biggest issue at this resort and the primary reason I maybe wouldn’t return. For us, when we are on vacation, we want to be able to have a quick bite to eat and be able to eat it outside. This resort needs more quick beach/poolside options to eat. Food trucks would have made this resort so much better. The lunch options were the buffet, which is very very far from the pool and beach and would require you to get dressed, beloved which again is a sit down only option but at least close to the pool/beach and outdoors or there is a pizzeria or bikini bites which had burgers which weren’t good, crepes which were literally just the crepe drizzled with a sauce and maybe a banana or a grilled cheese like sandwich. In comparison to Catalonia grand costa mujeres and many other places we’ve been, this place is lacking here for lunch. For supper the a la carte options were pretty good. We tried the steakville, mama Mia, beloved and Ayami for supper and they were all good, but not great. Service was overall lacking everywhere though with the exception of our waitress at mama Mia who was truly excellent and the servers at beloved. We came here very prepared to tip but didn’t find ourselves tipping as much as we would normally because the service was poor at times. The beach here is VERY beautiful with lots of chairs, white sand and plenty of shade options if you want shade. The water is that beautiful stunning blue you see in the photos. In my opinion though the beach at Catalonia grand costa mujeres is nearly just as nice (yes Maroma is slightly better and nicer, but not enough of a difference for me that I would chose Maroma over Costa Mujeres just for this reason). I’ve read some reviews that say the two beaches aren’t even comparable and I totally disagree with that, CGCM has a stunning beach as well (although less chairs and shade options). The pool here is nice and lots of chairs to choose from. It has one giant pool that is kinda broken up in three sections and there is a swim up bar. Traveling with kids? I would not suggest this resort. There are so many other better options out there. We did not bring our kids here and I’m glad we didn’t. They would have been bored out of their minds here. Catalonia grand costa mujeres is by far the better choice between the two if you have children. There was hardly any kids here at Maroma and there was lots at CGCM. Overall vibe. It’s very chill here and a place you would come to relax. It’s not a party resort by any stretch of the imagination (which we did not come here to do, so that was completely fine for us!). The scenery here is very beautiful with lush jungle surroundings. Because this resort is older the palm trees and foliage all around is very established and again very beautiful! Lots of wildlife all around as well which we enjoyed! Overall we had a good stay and a nice relaxing time, but won’t likely be back. Specifically if you are deciding between Maroma and Grand Costa Mujeres, in my opinion Costa wins, especially if food quality, food options and service are important factors for you!

Very relaxing
We spent a very relaxing vacation at the Catalonia playa Maroma. The weather our week was chilly for this time of year but that is not the resorts fault lol. The resort is beautiful and lush from the lobby all the way to the ocean. The beach is absolutely gorgeous and you can walk along way on it. The sunrises are beautiful and the moon over the water in the evening is breathtaking. The coati and raccoons can be very entertaining but can be very wanting of any food you may have outside the coffee bar. They are friendly but they are still wild animals and you need to be cautious. We booked a superior room with privilege service. This is a must at this resort as options for lunch are very limited once at the beach. There is a lot of walking on this resort. The pizzeria and the creparie restaurants are your only options and very good if you don’t want to walk all the way back to buffet for lunch (a bit of a walk) unless you have the privilege of going to the beloved restaurant which is worth the upgrade. The staff at the beloved are wonderful. The steakhouse and the Japanese (yappanani) I think that is the spelling are very good and the Italian. Book as soon as you get there is very hard to get reservations if you wait. The entertainment in the lobby is excellent but it would be better if it was every night before the theatre as it keeps you from going back to your room because you are tired from being in sun all day. The room was very clean and appeared freshly updated with amenities. The maid service was great and consistent. We would return to this resort.

Cheap, chaotic, unsafe, and not what it is advertised!
This resort is now a cheap place to stay and no longer the paradise that I used to be! It has evolved into a spring breaker, drink as much as you possibly can, party place. Do not take your family to this resort, do not think that it is a place for a honeymoon, it is not a paradise. It is complete chaos! There are safety concerns from the food, to the chaotic behavior of the guests. Several of the very popular amenities have been removed from the resort, but they still advertise that they are included in the price, and instead they have replaced them with new patio furniture.
