Real review from real people that just returned
We just got back from blue bay grand Esmeralda. I had read all negative reviews so wanted to put mine out here. We had a great stay. Food was great, staff and hotel were great and everything was clean. The issues that we had that are similar to other reviews are that the beach is not nice. A lot of seaweed and it smelled quite badly of a rotten fish smell. The other issue is chairs at the pool. We were there for 7 days and never once had a chair at the pool. It’s understandable at a large resort that there would not be enough chairs but the problem was that other patrons would put their towels on chairs the night before to save for the next day. This should be monitored by the hotel. Take their towels and make them pay to replace them as this is not fair behavior. The pool closes at 7 and doesn’t open u Tim the next morning, there shouldn’t be chair saving over night. Other than that we had a great stay with wonderful weather. We found prices at the gift shop to be better than at most shops in playa del Carmen. Bring everything you think you might like to have with you (medications sunscreen etc) because Mexico is no longer cheap. Restaurants in playa were ridiculously expensive, $6 American for water. So plan accordingly. Would go back for sure.
This place is really rising up!
If there is one review you read, let it be this one. We had our wedding here Feb 7. We booked this resort due to the lower cost for our guests. We ended up booking ourselves for a vacation in November to check it out and settle up the venue. In November this resort had just reopened and definitely didn’t have it together. The food was awful and maintenance was a problem all over the resort. We have both traveled pretty extensively and at that time it was as bad as a 3 star Cuban resort (before Covid). Even the al-la-carts were terrible. We ordered lobster one night for extra $ and as soon as it hit the table we asked them to remove it. It smelled awful. We left very worried but also unable to change the venue. So we just hoped for the best. After returning home in November the wedding planner left her position and we were introduced via video chat with a new one, Daniella. This definitely added to my nervousness about the big day. When we returned a few months later, Feb 3rd for our wedding we were so pleasantly surprised! It’s amazing what a few months can do! They worked very hard to have our guests close to us in buildings 2 & 3 which are by the pool and all the action. All the rooms we were given had no maintenance problems and were very clean and well stocked. The food was so much better too! Even at the buffet. And Daniella the wedding planner was absolutely amazing! She went above and beyond the entire week to make our time there with our friends completely amazing! The French restaurant was the best out of them all. Highly recommend the beef filet. The staff work very hard to make you happy. You often see them running and out of breath but still smiling. Ruperta at the beach buffet is such a gem. She made sure to take care of our entire crew the whole week. She runs the show at the buffet always with a smile. Both times we stayed we booked the swim up rooms and they come with 2 full bathrooms, a living area and separate bedroom. If you’re looking for a vacation on a smaller budget, give Blue Bay a try.
AVOID THIS PLACE!
Room smelled like sewage, lacking pool side lounge chairs. When walking around the premises we can smell sewage. Elevator was not working, there were some pieces from ceiling was falling on the ground. Front beach was terrible, food was not good, main buffet was not clean. No restaurant and bar were open 24 hours. Some employees working at the front lobby was relentlessly always trying to sell time share. Did not like that at all. Nope never going back to this place again. On the positive note our waiter was amazing and the lady who cleaned our room was also amazing.
Body fluids not ours
Just arrived. Booked 4 rooms. You would think at least one could be nice or have a view. Body fluids on the bed spread, no patio door handle, fifty shades of grey towels and face cloths, cracked and peeling paint. Reported to front desk. No response.
DO NOT STAY HERE
Do not book here! Update: Also there’s tons of bed bugs. There are so many issues with this resort and it is not even close to what was advertised. This is listed as a 4 to 5 star resort. It is a 2 at best. Not what we paid for. All the resort marketing and photos are completely out of date. This does not look like the website. If you can cancel you should. Unless you paid 2 star pricing. 1. The food is not good. The main buffet is all low quality food. The dining area is short staffed and the floor is broken all over with plywood boards everywhere and mats on top. The restaurants are not good. The food is very low quality and everything is additional cost. (Interesting since it is an all inclusive.) There are no food options after 10. A “snack” place opens but it has old hamburgers and hot dogs. Nothing else! They set up food at the pool side but it is again only hotdogs and hamburgers. No sides or anything. 2. The wifi was “included” but did not work at all the first 2 days of the trip and they were working on it. 3. There is no room service included at all. If you want to get food after hours the staff said it’s not an option. We did find a QR code sticker on the dresser and there were about 3 options and it was 10$ American to order. 4. The rooms are in horrible shape. They have not been maintained at all. The mirrors are old and are wearing away. The wooden furniture is damaged all over. The room is musky, damp and smells horrible. The doors are not at all secure both clearly have been broken into over the past years. There were three of us and they didn’t even give enough towels for us each to have one. The towels look grey, dingy and worn. Easily more than a few years old. In the bathroom the shower doesn’t have hot water except for like warm. The in room telephone is broken and in sad shape. 5. The beach is gross and not at all swimmable. Dark brown mud/ seaweed everywhere and it stinks horribly. Look at the Google satellite map and you can see it there. Again if you come for the beach stay away. 6. The pools are actually pretty good and the property is quite pretty. It ends there. I would not recommend and will not be back. So disgusting.
