Family vacation at the beach Barceló Montelimar
We had a good experience. The beach as always is clean and beautiful. Delicious fresh food and I loved how beautiful the garden is and warm jacuzzi for my elderly grandmother.

A great time at Barcelo Montelimar, december 2025
We had an excellent stay at the Barcelo Montelimar from December 18th to 25th, 2025. First of all, I must say that it's a paradise for nature lovers! The gardens are GORGEOUS! Very lush with lots of mature trees and palm trees, they are home to a variety of wildlife: many colorful birds and butterflies, small lizards, iguanas, geckos, etc. Transfer from Managua Airport Transfers were included in our vacation package. The journey to the hotel normally takes 2 hours, but due to massive traffic in Managua at the time we arrived, it took approximately 3 1/2 hours. The return transfer to the airport took 2 hours. Getting around the resort The resort is quite large, and complimentary shuttles (micro-bus) run throughout the day. Located on a hill, note that the Lobby is on the fourth floor of the main building, so iIf you are at pool level, you will need to take the elevator (or stairs) to the fourth floor to access the reception/ lobby/gym/bank area. The spa and beauty salon are located opposite the main pool. Room We had a bungalow in section 200 (as requested), quite close to most of the services and facilities. If you book the bungalow category, I suggest requesting (not guaranteed) a room in sections 100 to 300. Sections 400 and 500 are further away, and the shuttle isn't always nearby when you need it. The room was a bit dated, but very clean. Our housekeeper, Elizabeth, did an excellent job! Our air conditioning worked very well, but we heard a few people complain about problems with theirs and having to change rooms. We had good water pressure in the shower and plenty of hot water, except for one afternoon during our stay when the water was lukewarm. Beach It's very long and wide (especially at low tide). The golden-brown sand gets very hot, so it's advisable to wear flip-flops or shoes to reach the water's edge. The shoreline is flat and the sand is fine and compact, making walking very easy. At high tide, there may be stingrays; we didn't see any and didn't hear of anyone being stung during our stay, but we were advised to be cautious. The waves are medium to medium-strong, making it a good place to learn to surf. There were plenty of sunbeds available at ALL TIMES OF DAY, so there was no need to get up early to reserve one, which we really appreciated. The beach faces west, offering magnificent sunsets over the water! Pool There is a very large main pool, as well as three smaller pools, including one adult-only hydro-massage pool and children pools. Again, there are plenty of sun loungers available; you can find one at any time of day. Restaurants The hotel has five restaurants: the Oceano buffet (by the sea), open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; the Carey Snack Bar (by the pool), open for lunch; and three à la carte restaurants (Italian trattoria, seafood, and Japanese/Asian cuisine), open for dinner. For a seven-day stay, we had two à la carte dinners included. Reservations are required; we were given two tickets to present to the person making the reservation. Reservations for the à la carte restaurants are made at the Oceano buffet during breakfast for the same evening, we could not book in advance. The Christmas dinner was unbelievable! Entertainment/Sports/activities Entertainment and activities are offered during the day around the main pool (water aerobics, water polo, games, etc.). For evenings, you should head to "La Casona," a space located at the top of a small hill (lots of stairs) at the southern end of the complex. There you'll find the three à la carte restaurants, a bar, and the theater. If you have difficulty walking, I recommend taking the shuttle. The children's show starts around 8:30 pm. and the adult show around 10 pm. The casino was closed (permanently? I don't know), and there's no nightclub. Other activities include tennis courts, a basketball court, a kids' club, a children's playground, mini-golf, and more. Our favorite activity was strolling along the beach and through the magnificent gardens; we were constantly discovering new paths! On-site rep and excursions Nexus Tours is the team representing WestJet/Sunwing Vacations locally. They all speak French and/or English. The briefing took place the day after our arrival at 10 AM in the theater. You can book your excursions with them and pay by credit card or cash (USD or Cordobas). We took the "Granada and Las Isletas" and the "Masaya Volcano and Mercado" excursions. Here are the prices (USD, December 2025): Granada-Las Isletas: $83, Masaya Volcano & Market: $94, Cerro Negro Volcano & León: $101, Mombacho Volcano & Canopy (zipline): $126, Shopping at the Masaya Mercado: $42, Laguna de Apoyo: $80. Note that these places are about 2 hours from the Barcelo Montelimar, but Nicaragua is definitely worth visiting! Clientele Many people from other parts of Nicaragua come mainly come during the weekend for a few nights. The international clientele was mostly Canadians, like us, who had booked through WestJet/Sunwing Vacations with a direct flight from Montreal; we were on their inaugural flight to Managua. Nicaraguans can also purchase a day pass. Since Nicaragua's two-month school break is in December and January, I imagine there are more families visiting the resort at that time. It's important to know that because of the day passes, the resort is much more busy at lunchtime, which creates long lines at the buffet and snack bar. We usually avoided these by going to the buffet around 1:00 or 1:30 p.m. There's practically no line at breakfast, and not too much at dinner, except maybe on Fridays and Saturdays. For dinner, our tip was to arrive early (around 7 pm), get a table, and then have a glass (or two!) of wine while waiting for the queue to clear. If you have à-la-carte dinners included, I suggest booking them for Friday and Saturday. Money You can pay everywhere either in US dollars or the local currency Cordobas. The same applies to tips for hotel employees.

This resort is so-so
first of all, this resort isn't bad but it isnt the greatest either, but it also far from a so called "luxorious", during my stay they were so many things that needed enhancement but also many things that I liked For starters, the room I had (411) when I used the shower and turned the faucet to warm/hot water the water was still cold, another thing wrong about the rooms is that they are dusty and I had to spend an hour cleaning my room from dust since I was coughing non-stop. The most terrible thing of the entire resort is the customer service, during my last 2 days of Barcelo Monterlimar, I waited nearly 3 hours for laundry pickup and they took my clothes until the very next day. They told me that they were going to give it to me at exactly 8 AM yet I waited until 1 PM for my clothes and it was my very last day there, they had the audacity to charge me 15 dollars rather than apologize and not charge me. However from this resort, the things that I do like is the staff they are very friendly and kind, the food has much improved since the last I was there, and the beach was a true highlight of the entire visit, I do think people who gives it a one star are those who are being very dramatic. though this resort is not bad or good it just needs a lot of improvement.

Has gone downhill
Montelimar used to be a high quality all inclusive resort - it isn't now. If you are a foreigner, I would recommend somewhere else. It is not the quality you would expect for an all inclusive resort. Literally didn't have toilet paper in two different public area bathrooms during my one night stay. There were a bunch of other things that sucked, but too many to list here.

SO MANY NEGATIVES! STAY HOME? MONTREAL QUEBEC to BARCELO MONTELMAR NICARAGUA
MONTREAL QUEBEC to BARCELO MONTELMAR NICARAGUA The Inaugral flight from Montreal Quebec is just a week away. I'd like all Sunwing travellers to this resort to confirm if all the negatives are still true. Should we all just stay home and avoid this resort? LOCATION: It's a 1 and a half, to 2 hour transfer from the Airport over bumpy pot holed roads. RECEPTION: You better be able to speak Spanish as that's about all you get! ROOMS: Old, musty, and tired rooms, with large flying cockroach, and Ants sneaking under your door and in your bathroom sink. FOOD: NO A LA CARTE RESTAURANTS ANYMORE! THER IS ONE BUFFET RESTAUANT ONLY! Unbelievable that for Lunch and Dinner you actually have to line up outside iin the heat like cattle with over 100 fellow guess!!! Then you wait between 45 minutes to an hour and a half just to get your food, and then hope that you get a table with utensils!!! FOOD SERVICE MUST BE FIXED!!! The food itself is shredded unidentifiable dishes. Hardly any Protein at all. By the time you get to it, it's a messy mush tray, or gone. DRINKS: Bottom shelf alcohol, Proper drink mixes for Pinas, and Daqs unavailable. Enjoy your Orange Fantas all week. DO NOT DRINK THE WATER!!! So with The Inaugral flight from Montreal Quebec now just a week away, and Barcelo teaming up with a major new partner in Sunwing, has BARCELO cleaned up their game at all??? I'd like all Sunwing travellers to this resort to confirm if all the negatives are still true. I think travellers should stay home or find an alternative place to stay! Should we all just stay home and avoid this resort? POOLS: Okay, look clean but many many unsupervised local Weekend Day Pass Spanish children seem to appear on the weekends, and are loud and obnoxious! Pool Bathrooms lack toilet paper...no kidding....so people use them, and then later handle communal tongs, in the Buffet...enjoy your food poisoning! BEACH: Looks beautiful, but dangerous rip tides and undertow if you venture out in the surf. As others have mentioned, there is a safer quieter gentler spot at the ends BUT it is full of debris, rope, garbage...yuck!
