Wonderful Trip!
Incredible pools! Best we’ve ever seen—spacious, clean, and options for everyone! Lots of seaweed but in one day we got to snorkel right off beach and saw a turtle, a barracuda, and several colorful fish. We found the food very good and service excellent. Special thanks to Margarita and Daisy at the adult pool bar. Margarita makes the best drinks on property and was helping my husband learn Spanish. We will return.

We went to Carey and our bartenders were Jorge Ruiz and Perla. They were a great team and made us feel very welcome. We really enjoyed our time there.

Long Review: Amazing 8 days in Barcelo Maya Palace
Airport Arrival: Travelled from Aug 1 to Aug 9. Paid our tourist tax called Visitax prior to departure. Our Toronto flight arrived at 11 am in Cancun airport and it was not busy at that time. Customs took 5 mins and baggage claim took 1 hour. To exit the building, we kept walking until we passed through timeshare and taxi stands and exited all the way to the bus section. We located our transport, loaded our bags, waited 30 mins and our bus took off. Hotel Transfer: Traffic was absolutely terrible! From the airport, traffic, accident on the road, other hotel drop offs to Barcelo Palace, it took 2 and half hours!!!!!! We will definitely prebook our own private transfer next time. Check in: Front desk staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Check in took 10 mins. It was quick, however we were asked to pay the environmental resort tax which is collected at check in. Got our bracelets and went to grab a late lunch at Coral Grill. There are no room cards in the Palace. Your bracelet is your room access. Lobby: Employees work extremely hard to maintain and take care of everything. The entrance was grand and spotless. We were offered a welcome beverage and our luggage was brought up to our room. Room: Our junior suite was on the 3rd floor in the second Michoacan building with a king bed and 2 sofa beds. The balcony faced the beautiful lush garden. Our room was clean, spacious and bright and the mini fridge and pantry was fully stocked with snacks, water, juice and pop. 2 bath robes in the closet. Separate bath tub and shower. Toilet is separate as well. Beach and Pool: Beach was clear and gorgeous in front of the Palace and Tropical, no seaweed for the first 5 days and the sand was so soft. We brought water shoes but didn’t need to use them. On the 5th day the storm brought in gentle waves and seaweed but within 2 days, it was all cleaned up by the wonderful hardworking staff. Pool is enormous! Literally wraps around the resort. We enjoyed the different sections of activities and the waterpark. There are beverage service around the pool but not on the beach. Lots of loungers around the pool and beach, no need to get up early and reserve chairs. Guest bus: You can easily walk and access each property using the path that runs between the beach and pools or the double decker bus that runs between lobbies from 8:30 am to 2 am. Weather: Hot and breezy. No mosquitoes or flies around the property. Rained off and on a few times but it was brief and beautiful all over again. Food, buffet and restaurants: Food was delicious and plenty of options. Main buffets are Hacienda and Mirador. It is open during these hours: Breakfast: 7 am to 10:30 am Lunch: 12 pm to 3 pm Dinner: 6 pm to 10 pm Candy buffet is on Fridays Coral Buffet Grill is open from 10:30 am to 6:30 pm. The 3 specialty restaurants in the Palace are French, Brazilian and Caribbean. We did not get to try these however the menu options looked incredible. My husband celebrated his birthday on this trip. The staff brought a decorated platter with a birthday cake and candle to our table and sang happy birthday. It was really delightful. Entertainment: The gigantic theatre is indoor and air conditioned. One of the largest we’ve seen. Beverage service and lots of seats. The shows were fun and entertaining. We enjoyed the Michael Jackson tribute, Circus, Il Divo concert and Magic show. Kids show start at 8:30 pm and main show at 9:30 pm for 1 hour. Excursions: We booked 1 excursion through the hotel with Cancun adventures. The trip included a private catamaran ride, open bar, snorkeling with lunch and 2 hour free time in Isla Mujeres. Souvenirs: We bought all our souvenirs at the Plaza Mexicana accross from the Maya Mall and paid cash with no issues. Palace gift shop was convenient but really expensive. Incident: Saw a guest cut his feet in the pool while playing water polo. Lifeguards attended to him. But left all the blood droplets poolside all over the lounger and on the floor. Lifeguards said they would send someone to take care of it, but no one came. After 40 mins, I asked the staff to please follow up again. I stuck around for a little bit more to warn guests to be mindful of the droppings in the area and then I left for lunch. I feel this was a safety concern, it should have been taken care of right away because guests are walking around and kids running around the pool area barefoot. Someone can step on it or sit on it, if they’re not aware. Overall, we were very impressed with the size of the Barcelo complex. It is massive with lots to do and see. We will definitely return to the Palace.

Barcelo Maya Palace NO MORE - MUCH decline in Standard of Care/Food/Maintenance..
Having visited Barcelo Maya Palace for the 8th time in the past 13 years, since our kids were little with many beautiful memories created we absolutely loved that place. Our last visit was in 2018 before COVID, is is very sad to say that things had changed dramatically. The Standard of Care, lack of attentiveness, lack of maintenance and cleanness, specially inside and surrounding pool area, lack of proper room service (7 out of 9 days our rooms were not cleaned, had to chase for towels), lack of experience management who know how to deal with guests, lack of security for crowd control, Lack of staff, long hours to check-in and out, especially during busy season, Definitely decline in food quality, both at the buffet and night time restaurants that required reservations. Decline in night time entertainment variety and quality, almost EVERYTHING has declined in quality, definitely not Barcelo we came to know and love. Unfortunately this was our LAST visit to Barcelo Maya Palace or any of their resorts. We love the place and the area but there are many other NEWER Resorts with much Higher Standard for the same or better pricing who’d love our business.
