    Do not stay at Colonial!

The worst customer service at any all-inclusive resort I've ever been to! Maria at guest service is horrible! None of the staff ever picks up their phone so we couldn't order room service or get more towels.

    My overview of the Colonial

The rooms at this property have a bad odor, probably a combination of the high humidity and the resort itself is surrounded by trees, making it very damp. I think the Colonial might be the oldest in the group. The food had much to be desired, oddly the best meal I had was creating my own hamburger. The beach and pool areas where amazing. This resort is one of several on the same property, the Palace or Riviera might have been a better choice. This changed my option of an all inclusive resort, I think it might be better to choose a non-inclusive resort and have more control over what you can eat, the quality of the food, and the atmosphere. There isn't anything close to the resort so you would have to travel to get to other restaurants, bars, entertainment, etc. You do have the option to go to the other resorts on the property for some things, but we found it was more of the same. TIP: the surf is a bit rocky so either find a good spot or bring water shoes.

Second visit Barcelo Maya Colonial 2024 & 2025

Overall good vacation. sun was friendly to us. Great resort area with multiple restaurants and big pool area. Few remarks that I was not so pleased. Probably due the business decision of Barcelo group. First we thank for housekeeping to change the bed completely due it's really soft springs. They also cleaned the room promptly except floor was not vacuumed or swept. Loose sand stuck our feet's and same time it travels to bed too. When traveling to Mexico you supposed see Mexican beer in AI plan refrigerator, but NO only not tasty Heineken from The Netherland Europe. Thank god pool-bars and other drinking holes had Dos Equis (last year beer was better brand Modelo ). Kyoto and Tokio Alacarte restaurants are the best. Buffet restaurant and lunchtime choices warm food was not hot kind a lukewarm. Seasoning was below par (Real Sabor was missing). I don't mean spiciness more overall taste salt and spices combined. Everyone's taste in food is personal. I hope my constructive feedback's are accepted. After all these hiccups we are returning customers to Barcelo resorts in the future.

    November 2025

My partner and I stayed here recently, over all the resort was excellent. The only issues we had were air conditioning was always on so temperature of the room could not be controlled properly. We also had some issues with sewer gases coming up through the shower drains causing an odor in the bathroom.

Great Resort for Relaxing or Having Fun

Very clean resort. Staff were very helpful and happy. Always saying hello! Beach was great, plenty of palm trees for shade, or open sandy areas for suntanning. Bring good water shoes. You can use it without water shoes, but you need to be careful where you step. The currents change the location of the sand day to day. Food was good, when you sit down for a meal, order drinks and then salt and pepper as well (unless you like bland food). They are always trying to feed you alcohol! But, they make great non-alcoholic drinks as well. The pools are great. The bars can get busy during late morning and early afternoon, you need to be patient for your drinks. Bring some good walking shoes, this resort is big! We never took the shuttles and always hit at least 10,000 steps a day.
