Not as bad as I thought

We were very hesitant about staying at Playa Blanca Resort after reading so many negative reviews. I was prepared with a ‘Plan B’ if needed. I am happy to report we did not need it. RESORT: We flew from the US to Tocumen Airport and hired round trip transportation through the hotel. After 1.5-hour ride, we arrived at Playa Blanca. The resort is made up of different sections and there are plans for expansion. There is a sales office with a mock set up. When complete, this resort will be huge with a lot of amenities. One area is homes, other buildings are for timeshare/residents, and other buildings are the hotels. The lagoon will be expanded too. We requested to stay in the Town Center section as we read this was a better, newly remodeled area. Our request was granted. We were originally dropped off at the Playa Blanca lobby, but the Town Center has a separate lobby past the Playa Blanca lobby. Neither lobby has air conditioning but there are breezes by the Town Center making it a little cooler. Plus, the Town Center bar had premium liquor and the drinks were great. The Town Center residents have access to the Lagoon. I verified with the hotel directly and confirmed we had daily access to the lagoon. It is about a 10-minute walk from the rooms and lobby. ROOM: Once checked in, we went to our room, 531A. The room was big and had a patio area with two chairs and a table with great views of the lagoon. There was a desk area, small couch with a table and two ottomans, a closet with drawers, two nightstands, a six-drawer dresser, a king size bed (we requested two beds), and a separate shower and toilet. There were two sets of shelving with drawers for toiletries and safe. Two bath and hand towels were provided but no washcloths. We brought bath sponges/shower scrunchies and that worked well for us. The bathroom area was a bit small for two people to be in there at the same time, but we managed. The kitchen had a fridge stocked with beer and pop. There was a stove too. We had water on the counter for us and was restocked daily. There was a coffee pot with two cups but no silverware or other dishes. No coffee either. You need to request coffee at the front desk. Since it was evening when we arrived, we walked down to the lobby and asked for directions to the buffet. There is a map of the property, but it is not labeled well or with very few signs, directions, etc. to get around. We got lost twice on the way but eventually found it. You will walk through the Playa Blanca lobby, past the pool with water slides and then it is on the right. FOOD: The food on Christmas Day was not very good. The pasta and fruit were the best options. Even the desserts were not great. But this is Panama and not the US. We needed to adjust ourselves to the local foods and try some different things. The buffet is not air conditioned and it does get warm. I recommend sitting in the back area, past the desserts. It is closer to towards the beach where you can get some air. We heard the dinner on Christmas Eve was great. The dinner on New Years Eve was excellent! There was lobster, shrimp, ham, turkey, lots of sides to choose from, expansive salad bar, and lots of delicious desserts. What a nice treat! We did not try the hibachi/sushi restaurant even though it was air conditioned. There is a $10 per person surcharge for sushi and the place was never full. The Italian restaurant was pretty good. Our friends recommended the sirloin but ours was not good the night we went (we are from the Midwest). The salad bar was nice and had a good selection of salads, sides and dressings. The dessert table had a much better selection than the buffet. Another night we tried the pepperoni pizza and it was pretty good. Breakfasts at the buffet are standard—eggs and an omelet station, local foods, yogurt and fruit, but no bacon. You need to request bacon from the kitchen. The breads and sweets were abundant and pretty good. The selection did not vary much but you could always find something to eat. Lunch time was spent at the lagoon. The food was great. They served fish, burgers, chicken tenders, salads and other local dishes. The was only one day we had a buffet and it was New Years Day. It was just OK. We ate at the buffet one day and were not impressed with the selection. One night we ordered pizza from a carry out two doors down from the Town Center bar. It was very good. POOL: There are a couple of pools by the buffet. One pool has water slides, one pool by a bar was in a more shaded area and the other pools are closer to the beach. This area had the swim up bar. The other side had activities such as water volleyball. This is the main area for activities and unfortunately, the announcement was only in Spanish so we missed out on a lot. BEACH: The Pacific side of Panama is not known for its beaches. The sand at the resort is naturally a blackish color with white sand trucked in. The water is not clear and as others say, it is very murky. If you walk on the beach towards the RIU Resort, you will find locals selling souvenirs. They have hats, bags, cover ups, key chains, magnets, some jewelry, etc. There are tour guides for horseback riding, diving, etc. LAGOON: The lagoon is a very large area with water pumped from the Pacific that has been treated. There are three sections—one for timeshare/residents (restricted) and two areas—one area with a water slide and one area where the lagoon restaurant and bar are located. All areas have chairs and umbrellas. The water was clear and refreshing and there was a large area for jet skis. You can pay $10 for 15 minute ride on the ‘hot dog’ or ‘couch.’ My daughter enjoyed both rides. There are lifeguards on site. Mario was the nicest lifeguard we met. The bar by the lagoon is run by Juan Carlos—he is the best bartender and works very hard and appreciates the tips. ON-SITE SHOPPING: There is a store across from the buffet. You can get suntan lotions, coverups, toys, and a few medicinal items. There are a couple of stores by the Town Center—clothing, tour company (never open when we walked by), and a mini mart. Check pricing as we found the Town Center had better prices. There is a Super 99 and a Farmacia about a mile down the road. It is a $10 round trip taxi ride. They have a lot more to offer than what is property. RECOMMENDATIONS: Level-set your expectations. This is not a 5-Star resort. If it was, you would have paid a lot more money to stay here. For the money we spent, we had a great time and it met our expectations. Only stay at the Town Center. We saw some of the other rooms by the Playa Blanca side and they were small and not nearly as nice. We met a couple from Ontario who flew down on Sun Wing. They did not stay in the Town Center and they were cramped in their room (family of 5) that was not renovated. If you go to the buffet, look for Dina and Flora. They are the best servers we met. I looked forward to seeing them during my meals. They also work at the lagoon and that was an extra treat for us. If you stay in the Town Center, spend time at the lagoon. It is nicer and quieter than the pool sections by the buffet. The water is nice and there is a restaurant and bar right there. You can also exchange towels there. Try the Italian Restaurant. You will need to make reservations at 10am that day at by the Playa Blanca lobby. The staff work hard to make your stay enjoyable and really appreciate the generosity of a tip. I tipped the bar staff, waitresses/servers, and staff who cleaned our room every day. Tipping did not go unnoticed. The local language is Spanish. Most staff could speak a little English. I do not speak fluent Spanish but tried to speak a few sentences to everyone. Again, it was appreciated. Order a pizza by the Town Center Lobby bar. It is a nice change from the buffet. A medium pizza is $18. They have a pretty expansive menu too. Leave the property and go on excursions. We did and loved every minute. I would definitely return to Panama but I would travel to a different area to see what else this beautiful country has to offer.

Only average

We have stayed at several all-inclusive resorts around the Caribbean and this one was average. Let me start by saying the room was fantastic. Lots of space, view was amazing, shower was large and beds were super comfortable. Room service was average to below average. They would take our towels and, if we were lucky, leave us half the towels they took. We tried tipping them more but the service got worse. Not sure how that was possible, but it was. Food was mediocre. It was pretty much the same thing every day with little variation. Food flavor was very good, but the daily choices did not change much. The pools were cloudy and not very clean. The beach was very nice and fairly clean. There were activities that you could do there in the ocean, but they were fairly pricey. We did do a 2-tank dive with a local shop and that experience was very good. The locals love to use this resort as a day spot, so it was pretty busy most of the time. You had to get a pool chair early or had to get to the restaurant as they opened to get a seat without a wait. Daily activities and shows were horrible. They would not give us a daily schedule of events and we were on our own. We tried to watch the shows a couple nights but we got so bored we almost fell asleep. The shows were very corny with bad jokes and music. We did not mind the walk at all, but for someone that is not able to walk very far, you may want to reconsider. From our room to the restaurant and pool area, our electronics showed 800 steps one way. There were many shops in the complex that were empty. There was one grocery type store and one souvenir/necessities shop withing the resort. If you wanted/needed anything the two shops did not have, the closest store was about 2 miles away. We needed to get a cab ride to the store, which was $10 round-trip. We were also out in the middle of pretty much nowhere. We were 2.5 hours from Panama City and over an hour away from any sight seeing adventures. Overall, the experience and our time away was good. We have stayed at better and we have stayed at worse. We did meet some really great servers at the resort, that we will never forget! Our chances of going back to this resort are slim, but we did have fun.

Great if you just want to escape

When my husband and I arrive we were very impressed, there are lots of properties some that have Pena any residents, others are like time shares and then there’s the hotel and resort. At check in they could not find our reservations so we have to give a credit card to cover us until they figured out what happened. The next day I contacted cheap Caribbean and they were able to resolve the issue. Over all, I enjoyed our stay. Our room was beautiful and spacious. The salt water pool was nice but it was divided in a way that you can only use a specific section and it was a very long walk away. We didn’t enjoy the beach at all. The waves were coming in too strong and the water was dark. We were told that at this part of the beach is where a river meets the ocean so it’s not the nicest or cleanest. The other pools were crowded and dirty. Food options were limited but there was always hot food available. Finding water was one of our main concerns. Panama is very hot and humid so naturally you tend to drink a lot of water. We had to buy water bottles because the water fountain either stopped working or was broken and at the bars they only placed a container of ice water at certain times. Other than that we enjoyed our stay since we just wanted to get away and rest for the week.

Spring Break

The Playa Blanca Resort is like two different worlds on the same property, still under construction. One is a man-made world in which the modern conveniences that some have come to expect are pristinely available on the surface, and the other is a natural world teeming with life, energy and people loving one another. My daughter and I were placed in the former, but quickly requested to be re-assigned to a room in the latter. We had a fantastic time, and I would go again...
