Great summer vacation at the Occidental

My family visited July 2nd through 8th. The resort is older, however, very clean. We picked the upgraded Royal option and this is the only way I would stay at this resort, Royal offered us unlimited speciality restaurants, upgraded drinks, our own Royal pool and a personal bar, restaurant, and concierge. Stand out service was given by Karen and Donna in the Royal lounge, Eddy in the mane bar, and Socrates at the Royal pool. Pros: All speciality restaurants, Royal Lounge, Royal pool, cleanliness, service, food quality, resort size, location, beach. Average: Main pool crowdednesses, room size, air quality in room, room noise during evening entertainment. When we travel back to Puerto Vallarta , We will return to this Barcelo property because of the Royal service and price.

Beautiful Views and Fantastic Staff, but Serious Maintenance Issues and Poor Management Response

We just returned from a 7-day, 6-night stay at Occidental Nuevo Vallarta, and while the beach, views, and some of the staff were outstanding, our overall experience was extremely disappointing due to multiple room issues, poor front desk service, and a serious lack of responsiveness from management. Room Problems – and More Room Problems: Our first room had a leaking ceiling in the bathroom, with water coming down through the light fixture—clearly a safety issue. Shockingly, no staff on duty at night had the authority to move us, so we had to wait until 10:00 AM the next day to speak with the manager, and then wait until 2:00 PM for a clean room. The second room was along the atrium, which we weren’t warned about. At 10:00 PM, loud nightly entertainment began and the sound echoed through the entire atrium—making it nearly impossible to sleep. When we asked to move again, the manager told us, “This is an entertainment hotel and you were told that in the email.” We never received such an email. The third room was again in the older section. In the middle of the night, we woke up to another ceiling leak and an inch of water on the bathroom floor. There was visible black mold in the ceiling tear. When we reported this to the front desk, they again said we’d have to wait until the day manager arrived. We had a non-refundable $240 tour scheduled that morning but had to cancel it just to be able to talk to the manager in person—because the front desk staff member said that room changes could only be done in person, not by phone even though we told her about the tour. We were finally moved to a fourth room at 3:30 PM—this time in the newer section, with a balcony. It was clean, quiet, and should have been our room after the report of the leaky ceiling in the first room. Hotel Conditions: Once we started noticing leaks, it became obvious this is a larger problem. Many hallways in the older building had spots with missing ceiling drywall, water stains, and even blue towels on the floor to soak up water from leaks. Maintenance is clearly an ongoing issue. Staff – Mixed Experience: * The maintenance staff worked hard and responded quickly—they were kind and clearly overwhelmed. * The servers and bartenders were exceptional, especially at the Royal pool, where they knew us by name and offered truly personalized service. * The restaurant staff across the board were friendly, efficient, and accommodating. * Unfortunately, many of the front desk staff were not empathetic or helpful and showed little urgency about serious guest concerns like water leaks and mold. Royal Level – Highly Recommended: The private Royal pool and cabanas were wonderful, the Royal pool service was exceptional, and the dining perks made a big difference. If you do stay here, I strongly recommend upgrading to Royal Level—it’s worth the extra cost for the amenities and superior service. Final Thoughts: This resort has gorgeous views, great food, and wonderful staff in many departments, but it’s plagued by serious maintenance issues and poor guest service at the management level. The rain during our stay wasn’t unusual, and yet the hotel couldn’t manage the leaks or move guests efficiently. Guest safety and comfort should be a priority, and at times, it simply wasn’t. With proper repairs and improved training at the front desk, this hotel could be outstanding. But as it stands, we had to change rooms three times, cancel a prepaid tour, and wade through bathroom water at night—that’s not the relaxing vacation we planned.

    Lovely nice and clean resort

I love this place . The rooms are nice, the beds are so comfortable so as the pillows( I usually find it hard to sleep outside my home but I slept like a baby in this room. The view of the beach from the window is stunning. The pool is clean and the size is medium , they have different activities at the pool like aerobics and water volleyball. The beach is clean and nice. They have kids club with lots of activities. I love all the three restaurants especially the Mexican restaurant is so delicious. Their breakfast buffet comes with a lot of varieties. The dinner buffets has themes like Italian day or sea food day. The night activities in the lobby and theatre are making . The staff are very nice and friendly including the housekeeping staff, also Francisco and Erik at the lounge bar are so curtious and nice . Rafael at the Italian restaurant is very nice. All the staff are wonderful. The manager and Gabriella at the customer help desk are wonderful and they were so cooperative and nice when I asked for things and wanted to change my room for a better view. All in all , this is a fantastic all inclusive resort. I will come next time again , not only that , I got the free membership of Barceló group and I will go to this resort in Europe and all the places that it is available in. I forgot to mention that the mall is so close to you like 2 3 minutes walking distance , so you don’t have to worry if you need anything, there is even a food and grocery store there , plenty of fast food places, cafe and gilato , souvenir shops, the prices are reasonable. There are also shops inside the resort itself , in case you don’t want to leave the resort. You can take a taxi or Uber to Puerto Vallarta, it is about 30 minutes. The hotel is next to Hard Rock Hotel , a great location.I love this resort. They have a Gray Line office inside the hotel which took care of all of our transportation to and from the airport .

    Shade for pool

We have found the staff at Occidental Nuevo Vallarta to be very friendly and welcoming, which we truly appreciate. However, we have encountered some inconsistencies with the resort’s policies that have been quite frustrating. On our second day, we were informed that umbrellas are not allowed at the pool for shade, which seems contradictory since we used them the entire previous day without any issues. It feels unfair that guests who pay for an all-inclusive experience cannot consistently access basic comfort like poolside shade, especially when we are careful to return items to their original spots and maintain respectful behavior. While other guests seem to have more freedom with their activities, we were asked to remove our umbrellas despite using them quietly and responsibly. We also make a point to tip generously, even when others around us do not. It’s disappointing that such a simple request for shade is not accommodated consistently. We hope the management can address these policy inconsistencies to improve the guest experience.

    Subpar All Inclusive

The service was average at best. We had one server who was very accommodating. The concierge wasn’t willing to help us get reservations for dinner or help us out with booking an excursion. The hotel itself is outdated, but the pool and the beach were great. The room was decent with a nice view from the balcony. I honestly wouldn’t recommend to my friends or family. Fair price but the there isn’t a wide variety of food and it wasn’t good quality.
