Amazing beach, great staff, overall great value

This was our 2nd trip back to the Viva Wyndham Maya in Playacar. We travel to the area annually with a large group ranging from ages 8-65 yrs old. We love the location, always feel safe, and its a tolerable trip from the airport. My biggest point for this resort - is the beach! Its impeccable, and always well kept (we've also stayed at resorts next door or a few doors down). The gated community of Playacar is within walking distance to Playa Del Carmen, and we've only experienced welcoming locals while out and about if we ventured off the resort in the community. For the overall value (comparing prices, beach view, restaurants, entertainment, etc) Viva Wyndham is a great choice! The resort also offers timeshare options (but they in no way push you to learn more). We love it so much that we are interested in learning more. Event Staff, wait service, cleaning staff, concierge and check in staff - all were amazing. They work so hard to make sure everything is clean, and yet have so much fun while doing so. The nightly shows are very entertaining, and their daytime fun isn't annoying by any means. If you enjoy working out on the resort, their gym is great & well furnished and monitored for safety as well. Lots of cardio, and free weights for all fitness levels! Food - their restaurants are great and have a good mixture of food options. We love late in the day on the beach, so we always made reservations for later in the evening (but I suggest you make your weekly reservations on the first day as they can fill up if you have a larger group). Size - this is a smaller resort, so you can easily walk to anywhere on the resort, which we liked with smaller children. While there is always something to do, and the beach is incredible - there isn't a fancy waterpark, etc. but there are boogie boards, catamarans, kayaks, and easy walking to shopping. We always book a private transfer to/from the airport - otherwise you may stop at several resorts to drop off other travelers, and we find it takes more than double the time to drive direct transport to the resort.

Wasn’t super impressed

I’ve never given a bad review to any of the resorts I’ve stayed at but this is this first time I’ve been to a resort and most likely wouldn’t return. It wasn’t horrible and for the price it wasn’t that bad ... but the resort’s description was a bit misleading and I just wanted to be honest with my review since that’s what I look at before booking a resort I’ve never been to. So the trip from the airport is longer than expected. It’s farther out than other resorts so instead of it taking about 30 minutes to get to we were in our shuttle for almost 1.5 hours. Also, we were required to pay for the daily taxes and for the use of the in room safe during our stay so we were billed that on checkout which I’ve never had happen. The WiFi around the resort and in the room (free) was not good enough for us to use for work purposes or even just the typical social media use so we used our own data. The buffet is not great and I’m not very picky. Also, you are limited on restaurant reservations. You get a limited amount based on your stay so we were not able to visit the nicer restaurants each night ... only 2 nights of our stay. So we had the buffet one night and snack bar the other and both didn’t have many options. The room was great but we upgraded to an ocean front view and barely could see from our balcony. It wasn’t worth the upgrade. Though the room was beautiful and very clean. One thing I did like was the pool area only had one time in the morning when it was loud (water aerobics) but other than that it was quiet with nice jazz music always playing. The bar is right there and it still was quite peaceful. We are usually beach bums but this was the only spot where the WiFi worked well. The coffee at the cafe bar was fantastic but the coffee at the buffet was instant and had an off taste to it all week. So we would get coffee at the bar prior to breakfast and after. The beach is gorgeous but very busy. The chairs are far from the water but it’s a pretty view. Though they pack so many chairs on the beach in the resort’s area that you’re on top of your neighbor and really can’t move around. One last thing ... our Amstar person was nowhere to be found at the resort to book excursions through or get our info from to get back to the airport through their transport program. I’ve only had this happen one other time out of about 20 trips I’ve booked through them. This is also a timeshare resort so you will have people at check in bugging you to go to breakfast with them to listen to their specials. Again, it wasn’t awful but I’ve stayed at other resorts that I felt were much better. It just all depends on what you like out of a resort and what you don’t care about as much.

Read Reviews Before Booking

This is the third Viva Wyndham Maya resort I have visited and mostly likely will be the last. First I’ll focus on the positive aspects of the resort. It is located on a beautiful beach which is kept clean. The specialty ala carte restaurants were very nice and the food much better than the La Terraza Buffet, however the portions in all of the restaurants were small. Unfortunately there are many more negative aspects to the resort. I am a seasoned traveler who has stayed at many all-inclusive throughout the Caribbean and I try to maintain a positive attitude realizing that other countries often do not compare to what is expected in the U.S. There were many disappointing things about the Viva Wyndham Maya but I’ll focus on a few. First, at registration I had to sign a document that I would pay a “sewage tax”, as the clerk called it, for $ 2.00 U.S. per day. I did not know about this and when I inquired at a later time it was an “environmental tax” that all guests must pay. Second, although there was a $ sign next to the in room safe icon on the website, it did not indicated that it was $2.00 U.S. There were two complimentary ½ liter bottles of water in the room when I checked in. After that guests were required to purchase there water. I have never been to a resort that did not supply drinking water. I find it amusing that you could have all the free tequila, rum, or vodka that you wanted for enjoyment but had to pay for water that sustains life. There were signs at the bars and beverage stations throughout the resort that said “it is forbidden to refill water bottles”. In fact there was an attendant at the drink stations to see that this rule was followed. While setting up a beach lounger before going to breakfast I was approached by security who wanted my room number and told me there is no reserving beach loungers. After pointing out the ten to twelve other loungers that were “reserved” with beach towels or other personal items, he shrugged and insisted I leave the loungers unclaimed. There was no hot water in my room each morning for shaving or showering. I reported this the first morning of my twelve day stay and it was never corrected. The water was hot in the late afternoon and evening. Several days my room was not cleaned until after 4:00 p.m. and I had to leave the room after returning from the day at the beach and wait outside. The food at the buffet restaurant was O.K. at best. The entrees were repetitive and often cold. I am still amazed how scrambled eggs can be that hard and dry. Some items were good and others just plain bad. There is a money exchange in the lobby which gave me pesos in large bills (500 pesos). Needing cash for taxis into town I could not get change at the money exchange, the reception desk, the gift shop, or guest relations. Needless to say the taxi driver did not have change for a 500 peso note (about $30.00 U.S.) None of these things ruined my trip but I made it uncomfortable at times and I expected more for a trip that cost $3,400. Many reviews give glowing reports and other are terrible. I suggest that you read both the good and bad ones and decided for yourself if the resort is worth the cost of your stay.

Good value for money

The resort was nice, loved the beach and pools. Rooms were adequate, comfortable beds, hard to get shower warm, was lukewarm at best. Food was plentiful but just ok. I would go back, but maybe look for something with better food.

If you really want to make your vacation memorable, go to the spa's beach cottage, where you can get a Mayan tattoo or Caribbean braids. And what's more romantic than a Couples Moonlight Massage?
