El Dorado royale: a gourmet upsell

Beach is non existent. Due to hurricane damage it is in the process of reconstruction and basically unswimable. Rocky terrain boarders the shore line in most areas and stone pylons and large sandbags barre further entrance and wreck the seascspe several yards out along entire coast. Pools are ok. There are quite a few to choose from. But quite literally only one wait staff per pool which means you're getting your own drinks. Also no food available at poolside. Gym facility is quite great offering good balance of free weights and cardio machines. Restaurants are ok. I wouldn't call it gourmet like the title of the hotel indicates. Sounds like marketing terminology. Lots of up-sells at the restaurants and bars. Kind of annoying. Very few staff understand English very well which has not been my experience elsewhere. They don't go out of their way to assist and generally are not as friendly as other places. Room service is quick and usually accurate. Room was plain and lightly outdated. Swim up rooms are over rated. Doesn't offer much space to sun bathe. Air conditioning worked well and doesn't shut off to conserve energy. Facility is nice and we'll kept. shared ability is nice. Property is spread out and immense. Golf carts will assist with travel to and fro. Restaurants appear empty but some require reservations which means extended wait times. Entertainment is nothing to write home about but worth your attention. Bars service is quick and accessible but was advised on two occasions that premium alcohol was not available at this time. Time share speech is standard operating procedure which seems to be questionably popular. But I couldn't see myself returning here ten years straight to take advantage of any of the alleged cost saving benefits offered through this style of pay-up-front marketing.

Beach was disappointing, the rest was okay

If you're considering this resort because you want beautiful beach views or good ocean swimming/snorkeling, I highly recommend staying elsewhere. Notice that there aren't many views of the actual waterline, or the beach. That's because there are large concrete structures in the water, about 50 feet from the shore. They are supposedly "artificial reefs", but they stick out of the water a couple of feet and they're a major eye-sore. If you swim past them, the water is pretty deep (6-8 feet) and it's hard to stand. They also have large black tubes of sand leading from the beaches into the water, supposedly to help with waves. They're ugly and they ruin the natural beauty of the beach. I'm pretty sure I saw several dead bird carcasses on the sand bags. The rooms aren't bad, but don't spend the extra money on a swim-up room unless it's one of the few that are located in front of the beach with an ocean view. Our "swim up" room was tucked in the back of the resort, and it felt like a large bathtub, not a swim-up pool. We hardly used it. The food is just okay. If you want anything like steak or lobster, you have to pay more. If you ask for an additional entree, the servers may look at you funny. Avoid the culinary theatre, it's not worth the extra $10 you'll have to spend to get a reservation. The show is corny and the food is average. This might be just a normal thing for all-inclusive resorts (I've only been to this one), but every opportunity they get, they will try to sell you something. Mostly excursions and packages, but they also set up booths with crappy merchandise and jewelry that they try to sell you. It can be annoying at times. With that said, we did the Isla Mujeres day trip with snorkeling and we enjoyed it. I just wish I didn't feel like I was being sold-to at every corner of the resort. What did I like about this place? Most of the staff members (with the exception of the food servers) are very nice. They do their best to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. The pools and swim-up bars are decent. The grounds are maintained well. But I think we could've stayed at a better place for the money that we spent here.

Beautiful Grounds Fantastic Staff

The grounds are beautifully kept and immaculate. Gorgeous views of the winding lazy river, pools, and palm trees abound. Not too many ocean views and the beach has been washed away in places but they are working on that. The staff is incredible, esp the entertainment staff. Jose was our favorite and Haxby and Majo also were amazing and helpful. Jose kept us as involved and active as we wanted to be. The main pool had lots of things going on, plenty of chairs and bali beds if you wanted. The food was better than average for an all inclusive with many restaurant choices. Our favorites were the two pan asian restaurants and the romantic dinner for two on the beach (albeit an upcharge for that). Also the mexican restaurant the dinner show, Fuentes, were both good. The wait staff was mostly good. The biggest negative is all the upselling that they are trying to do. The extensive wine list at every meal that is all "extra" and the additional menu the is "extra" at some restaurants. Not always explained very well. Also we attended the "vacation club" presentation and tour to get a free couples massage and there was some pressure to join and then the "free" massage was almost impossible to schedule, so that was disappointing. The rooms were decent, nice beds, nice pillows, terrible lighting, great water pressure. We were in a quiet area. Loved that. Overall a wonderful relaxing vacation

Overall, Outstanding! Few comments

We've been to 5 different resorts in Riviera Maya, this one has the best beach, far and away. The service was very good, not great. Servers and bartenders were always very busy, so they became a little short and irritable a few times. The food was EXCELENTE! Very much quality over quantity. Gourmet Inclusive is a great name for it. Our room was a little outdated, kind of dark. We will probably splurge for a room upgrade next time. HATED that you have to actually stand in a long line of people checking in/out to check out at the end of your stay. I haven't checked OUT of a hotel in like 15 years. Usually they just slip a receipt under your door the last morning of your stay, and unless there is a problem, you can just leave. This was a pretty major pain in the butt as we were trying to get to the airport for our flight. Either change this policy to how every other hotel in the world does it, or at least have a designated "CHECK OUT" line so you don't have to wait for the more time-consuming check-ins.

Overall, Outstanding! Few comments

Hotel Description

El Dorado Royale a Gourmet Inclusive Resort, by Karisma: All-Inclusive Heaven

Ignite a new flame or rekindle your romance along the sugary shores of Playa del Carmen at El Dorado Royale, a Gourmet Inclusive Resort by Karisma. Voted one of Conde Nast Traveler Readers' "Top 100 Hotels in the World," this adult-only retreat offers a gourmet all-inclusive plan that pampers your palate while you swim in AAA Four Diamond luxury.

Stroll hand in hand with your sweetheart along the resort's secluded sands or get the wedding party together for a swim in the resort's natural, saltwater pool. Looking to achieve the perfect bronze for your wedding? Surrender to the sizzling Mexican sun on a lounger or slide into one of the resort's 12 freshwater pools and make your way to a swim-up bar for a cocktail... and since there are 11 in-pool bars, chances are you won't have to float very far.

Eight gourmet restaurants and snack bars tempt your taste buds with selections like the lobster lasagna from five-star D'Italia, fondue with a view from La Fondue and the Pacific Rim cuisine of Kampai. For a unique show with your meal, head to Fuentes-Culinary Theatre, where flat-screens give guests an inside view of the work of Michelin-trained chefs. When twilight beckons, grab your honeymoon-heartthrob and nestle into a swinging chair with a drink for live music at Las Guacamayas, or sip premium martinis at the stylish Martini Bar. If you're looking for more, there's always a 20-minute cab ride to the heart of Cancun's nightlife.

Before tying the knot at the resort's stunning, beachfront wedding chapel, do away with any pre-vow jitters with a body scrub and a beachfront sky massage in a palapa overlooking the Caribbean. While you're there, take a lesson from the pros, who'll teach you how to give your spouse-to-be a massage when you get back to your Infinity Pool Swim-up Casita Suite. The suite has a private plunge pool that leads to the lazy river, a jetted tub and exclusive perks; we wouldn't blame you if you never left your room. But when you do, be assured paradise is waiting.
