Could have been better

The all inclusive aspect was very appealing, but the service and accommodations were inconsistent. The room was comfortable, but in need of updating. The bathroom smelled moldy and the toilet was unreliable. I had to fix it myself 2 times to get it to flush. The phone in our room was broken: none of the quick dial buttons to the front desk, room service, etc. worked, and the message light was broken which caused us to miss an important message (more on that later). And the screen door to our balcony was also broken. We had prearranged for special room accommodations for our wedding anniversary (wine and treats upon arrival, romantic turndown in the evening, breakfast in bed) but it took 3 days and repeated visits to the concierge for them to deliver the services we were promised. It felt like we had to beg for these services which took the fun out of it. The most disappointing thing about our stay was the food. Across the board, the restaurants were all disappointing. Sure there was plenty of it, but the quality was inferior. At each restaurant we felt like we were eating buffet quality food. The highlights were the pools and the service from staff. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. The staff were truly exceptional. The beach was a big disappointment because of excessive seaweed, but I know that this was beyond the control of the resort. But as a result, we never swam in the ocean. Honestly, I might be inclined to give this resort another chance, in the hope that we would get a better maintained room next time, and with much lowered expectations for the food. One last complaint: we prepaid for roundtrip transportation from the airport, but our 11:30am pickup from the resort was changed to 10:45am without anyone informing us, so we missed the van and had to pay out of pocket for a taxi to the airport. Amstar told us they left a phone message in our room about he changed pick-up time, but because our phone was broken, we were never aware of the message.

Was a great vacation! but if I'm honest...

Resort was good, but I have to say my bar is high due to our Punta Cana trip to Majestic Colonial. My perspectives, not a complaint list, but an honest comparison… • Kids camp did not compare. Majestic has so much more to offer with 3 different age orientated water areas and engaging staff that did so much more with the kids. Dreams was limited to 1 small water area more for little kids and only open during certain times and the leaders tried to get all the kids to do structured activities at the same time so they didn’t feel free or got frustrated they couldn’t do what they wanted. Kids only went once. • Beach didn’t compare. Water was warm and blue further out, but sand was full of seaweed and rocks. Too shallow to snorkel and see fish. At Majestic, you can float 15 feet off the shore and see coral and fish. • Restaurants/food was good, but all seemed small. Didn’t need reservations but then waited to be seated all the time. Kept running out of cups at Buffet so had to wait around. Majestic had bigger restaurants with better views and more food options. Plus I didn’t like being pushed to spend more money to upgrade to bottle service for wine. Didn’t even realize I could have gotten the house wine for free the 1st few nights. Just seemed like they were always trying to sell you something to either get access to something or for service. I did reserve the Hibachi table for my wife’s birthday but we couldn’t make the 6pm reservation and was able to get a 7:30 spot by buying a $100 bottle of wine. Was worth it! All the drinks were pretty watered down and I got into trouble when deciding to just do Tequila shots. Ouch. My bad. Even beer cans were all 3.2 beer. Really enjoyed a good beer on our layover on the way home. • Pools were good, but crowded. They only had 2 and they were close to each other so everyone seemed to come to our little area. Majestic has a long pool along the length of the resort so everyone just goes near their room. Seemed more spread out. • Landscaping/grounds, All was clean, but Majestic had better landscaping with a more tropical feel. Dreams had more convenient smoking areas which aligns well with their cigar selling efforts but exposed the rest of us to it too unfortunately. • Rooms were similar. Very comfy. Clean, and good service. TV was all in Spanish so we didn’t use it. Kids just watched stuff on their devices. Great WIFI through out resort and you didn’t need to keep logging in to something. Just connected and worked. I really liked the mini bar in Majestic, which had a bottle of Vodka and Rum with mixers in the room. Great for when you got to wait on the kids. Dreams only had some soda, water and mini coronas which were stronger than the beers at the bars by the way. Again, we still loved it and it was a dream vacation for sure. Total +'s were... + Nice to get out of Cancun crowdedness and resort is isolated in jungle + easy access to Tulum for day tripping or the Coba Mayan Ruins and Xel Ha water park which were excellent!

What's to Love

As of June 2018 you can bring your furry friend along!

Upon arrival, the festive champagne and cool towels. Not too shabby.

The resort sits on a bluff overlooking the Caribbean - dramatic blue hue views.

Beach and pool Bali beds for your Bliss Binge.

Explorer's club (kids 3-12) that is Maya-themed with a splash fountain, climbing wall & more.

Red Cross certified staff supervise the aforementioned club. A relief, right?

Core Zone Teens Club - activities that channel energy (read: teen angst) of your adolescents.

Spa has three beach cabins, two jungle cabins and a holistic cabin.

Private Vichy and Swiss shower and hydrotherapy room, for starters. More awaits.

Purification with a Temazcal sweat lodge, then cold-plunge. You'll be changed.

You can do yoga on the beach. Strike a pose.

What We'd Change

Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa is a bit of a trek from the airport. But it's worth the trip; and once you get here, you'll never want to leave!

Why You Should Go

It's 80 minutes from the airport - once you're here you won't want to leave.

Mayan ruins, Tulum and Xel-Ha, are just 30 minutes away.

Tulum is the home to the world's second largest barrier reef. Take the plunge.

Upgrade to the Preferred Club, get better rooms, personalized check-in and more.

On-site dive shop for scuba, snorkel and fishing. Jump in.

Complimentary green fees at Riviera Maya Golf Club through Dec. 23, 2017.

Spanish-style chapel providing couples with Catholic ceremonies, if desired.

Check out eco-adventure at Xel-Ha - a journey through dramatic lagoons & caves.

Tours of Cenotes - underground rivers or lakes are just five minutes away.

It was the location for ABC's "Bachelor in Paradise."
