Small Resort, Great Time

Take this for what it's worth. This is the first all inclusive resort type trip my wife and I have taken. We have usually taken cruises in the past but wanted something different. Our criteria for picking a resort was something well reviewed and not in the heart of Cancun or Playa del Carmen. We didn't really want a resort in a "city" type setting. We picked well, this resort was more "rural" if that analogy works. The front lobby was very attractive and open and the people working the desk were very pleasant to deal with. From there you walk on a bridge over a cenote (pond) and then down a stone path through the 6 building blocks where the rooms are located. Between the path and buildings are a row of trees and foliage. All 6 buildings are 3 stories high and all have a balcony facing the path. We were on the 1st floor and really people on the path would really have to be looking for the most part to see you and vice versa. It was pretty private. Our room was very nice and I have no complaints. After that you come to the pool area and then the beach. It would be a spectacular beach if not for the seaweed, not the resorts fault of course. Workers do what they can to clear it, but it's an issue all along that coast at the moment. Maybe it will clear out, workers said it was clear a few weeks before we got there. The pool area was pretty crowded, but perhaps more people were avoiding the beach because of the weeds, I don't know. A swim up bar is being constructed right now, it would have been nice. Food was plentiful and quite good. Other than dinner service on a cruise ship which is always good, buffet food was a step up from a ship. Well for Carnival anyway. I really recommend the privelaged upgrade, if only for access to BLoved bar and resteraunt on the beach, we liked that a lot. The only resteraunt I didn't care a lot for was the Italian one, but I don't like that type of food much to begin with. I really liked the steakhouse and anything from BLoved. The Mexican and Asian ones were also pretty good. Drinks were good and readily available everywhere it seemed. Can't say much for the spa as we didnt use it. Overall we had a great time. The nice thing about this resort compared to other large ones in the area came to distance. We spoke to people from big resorts on an excursion and they had complaints on walking long distances to get anywhere if a golf cart ride wasnt available. Dont have to worry about that here. My tastes in resorts may be different than yours, if you want 5 star everything maybe you'll be disappointed, but for the price this exceeded my expectations.

Our spring beach vacation

My wife and I were pleasantly surprised at the beauty of the hotel lobby after looking at the highway entrance compared to other resorts. We were met with great hospitality and it extended through our departure. We were asked if we wanted to upgrade to a romance package which gave us an upgraded room closer to the beach, two tickets to their dinner show including dinner and show, two 25 min massages and most importantly a romantic dinner on the beach. We had not done the latter so we elected to dive in for the extra $400. The restaurants were beyond our expectations, especially Beloved which we paid extra for with Cheap Caribbean by getting Privileged wrist bands. The buffet breakfast and lunch were also exceptional for buffet food. The coffee bar was great as well. We only had two complaints. There was seaweed on the beach and they clean it up weekly. Apparently it’s a problem with the whole Rivera Mya right now so there is nothing the resort can do and it is right back being swept up in sheets within only a few hours. The pool was great though, the guests were a great mix of people from all over, it was quiet but yet there were activities as well. Our yoga instructor Freida was exceptionally wonderful. Our biggest frustration was our romantic dinner on the beach which we saved for our last night. Members are considered “Exclusive” with their wrist bands and their Romantic dinner is set up nice white draperies around their station on the beach with a candle on the table and up lighting from the beach while we were out in the open under a low lying light on a pole that looked like we were going to be interrogated with nothing around us between the Exclusive members. This would have been fine if they would have pointed out the difference ahead of time. Also the meal was ok, but our least favorite and not special at all. When we complained at check out and asked for partial compensation we were told they couldn’t do it because it was part of a package prorated per day. They were kind and apologized and gave us some trinkets from the8r show we will never use, but no reimbursement. Overall, we still enjoyed the resort but wouldn’t recommend the additional Romance package.

Beach could be better

This resort was nice however they did not have a lot of beach chairs on the beach or by the pool. If u needed to be in the shade you had to get up around 7 am in order to save chairs and umbrellas at the pool or you were sol! Food- not so good. I recommend taking advantage of the fresh cooked options at breakfast or at lunchtime. Buffet food and other restaurant food was not good unfortunately. Staff on the other hand was amazing! The nicest and most accommodating. We used Amstar to book some trips later to find out that the so called shopping trip to play del carman was a scam. We were told that we would be taken to an artisan market where everything was made in Mexico by artisans. Later we found out that was a lie. A lot of the items were made in Turkey. Do not go on the “free” trip because it’s a scam! Hope this helps!

Great time at Catalonia!

Prior to going to Catalonia Royal Tulum, I read a mixture of reviews. Now that I have returned, I must say this Resort is beautiful! Check-in was a breeze. Our room was not ready yet but that was fine by us. We received a welcome drink of our choice; beer, margaritas, whatever your wanted. The front desk people were very friendly. We got our suits on, and were accompanied by Edgar, our Concierge. He gave us a tour (how to get to restaurants and beach) and gave us information about the resort without too much upgrade selling... There also wasn't many soliciting of items or timeshares on the beach either like I read in some reviews. The walk to the beach is just beautiful. We walked through the "jungle" and saw the Coatis (which are just adorable!) The beach did have some seaweed, and the men worked diligently on trying to create an opening for people to get into the water. I mean, its nature, there is going to be seaweed. There were a lot of high tides which then brought in more seaweed by the end of our stay. It really didn't bother us. We still managed to get into the water and have fun. The pool activities were fun - my husband joined in on a water polo game, and it was hilarious! The pool water was mostly like bath water but it felt cool because of the ocean breeze. They have just recently started construction - adding on a swim up bar, which is much needed! but the construction did not interfere with swimming/atmosphere. We had a short stay so we didn't get to try many restaurants for dinner. But we did go to Adelta, two times (The Mexican restaurant). It was delicious!! We also tried the Italian Restaurant, Toscana. It was tasty, but not like the Italian food we get in Chicago. The breakfast and lunch buffets were really fresh and tasty. I especially enjoyed the Ma Loo (the natural juice bar on the beach.) I highly recommend 'The Sun'. We ordered room service a couple of times as well. The food was hot and cooked to perfection! The rooms were very comfortable. I've never slept in such a comfortable bed at a hotel, ever! The over-sized shower with waterfall shower head was fantastic too! Our room was on the 3rd floor, so imagine that the A/C was comfortable but we would have liked it colder. The balcony view was overlooking the jungle. Not much to see aside of the tops of the trees. We didn't really have anything negative to say about Calatonia. We had a blast and will always remember our time with Calatonia Royal Tulum.
