Nice but in need of....

The resort is beautiful. Food was good Pools were nice. Beach was awful. Needs new sand and there is tons of seaweed and not pretty at all. Rooms need to be renovated! First building we were in was so musty and moldy we asked to be moved.

Not 5 stars resort! Not even close!

Room very old and smells really bad, my wife is asthmatic and need to be using her puffer a lot because of that AC barely works Toilet was broken when we got there. I fixed it myself. After 3 or 4 days, we returned from the beach and the apartment was inundated, they needed to replace the toilet internal pieces. Beach isn't to be considered a beach. We didn't enter the water in 10 days. Pools are amazing nothing to complain about that. New years eve party there was no food, the food finished at 11 pm and the party finished at 4 am. Snacks bar was supposed to be 24h but it never happened. Never go there during this time of the year, January 1st we went to the Steakhouse and we waited for our dinner for around 1:30h, not joking. Everyone at the restaurant was complaining about the time waiting for food. We got to the restaurant at 7 and left at 10, what a waste of time for 1 steak very small. The booking of restaurant is almost impossible, the concierge told me that if I wanted to go to the Oriental one we would need to be lining up at the main reception to schedule with the concierge over there at 7 am. But when you get to any restaurant there's not half of the space filled with people, only empty tables.

I staff is amazing. The beach is terrible... we could not get in the water the whole time. They are building over the water bungalows.

Outstanding Service

I am a 32 yr old female. I work as a manager at a fine dining restaurant. I am sober. My fiance and I just returned home from our stay at BlueBay. We both commented numerous times at how impressed we were with the service and hospitality at BlueBay. Any question we had was immediately and efficiently answered, and with a smile! Every staff you come into contact with from entering to leaving seems genuinely excited to meet you! As someone who works in the industry, I was overjoyed to receive such exceptional attention from the staff, always. 10 stars easily. It is so clean. We got up early every morning to find the staff even power washing and leaf blowing the paths! Our room was cleaned every day, the beach was clean, the pool was clean, the bathrooms were clean. Even a new white table cloth with each table turn. Impressive, and appreciated! The food at BlueBay is just edible. I wanted at least one option to be WOWed by the food, I would even pay extra for it. You can make reservations at their restaurants, Mexican and Italian are YES. Stay away from the seafood if you're a seafood person. I was woefully disappointed. We ordered a Rib Eye at the Italian restaurant for an extra $26 USD and it was meh. The buffet has a great variety of food. The bread, salads & fresh fruit options were always great. But again, the food was just meh. This is a party place. There is constant drinking. I am sober, it got pretty old really quick. You can't drink the water in Mexico, so I found it pretty difficult to drink anything at all. Hot coffee int he morning and Diet Coke with no ice at day. I wish they had cold bottled water readily available. I wanted to relax during my vacation, and I didn't really find it possible. Between the windy weather (which I know can't be controlled) but there wasn't much peace and quiet. On my last day, I did find that the smaller pool by the lobby was somewhat quieter than the larger pool that was by our room and next to the beach. We did two excursions through Amstar. High recommend! They are located right on the resort, and the staff there was amazing. Helpful and knowledgeable. We went to Chichen Itza on our first excursion and it was amazing. It was a very long day. 13hours. Chichen Itza is 3 hours away, so 6 hours of travel time, not including picking up people from other resorts. To me, it was worth it though. We enjoyed the excursion so much we booked a second to Tulum and a cenote and lagoon tour, with lunch at a private beach club. It was absolutely fabulous! GO GO GO. Go and see Mexico's beautiful and rich history! BlueBay @ night is a pick your own adventure. There is always entertainment at the 24hr Black & White Bar. It starts with something for kids (there are a lot of kids at this resort) and then a circus or dancing style show for adults. There's a beach bar that's more low key, a lot of people bring cards to play with their group which is a really great idea, whether it was a drinking game or not. To sum it up, I was blown away and the excellent level of service, and how clean this resort was. I felt like they wanted me to be there. The food needs work, and if you're not a partier, maybe this isn't for you. I would return, if only for how great the staff made me feel.

If you want luxury, this hotel is the answer. From a personal Jacuzzi on your private terrace, to an over-sized canopy bed on the beach, you'll relish every moment at this resort.

What We'd Change

Hotel Description

Bluebay Grand Esmeralda: Luxury Abounds at this All-Inclusive Retreat

Warm, frothy water spills over and around you. You're stretched out in a private Jacuzzi, on the terrace of your suite, at the all inclusive Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda on the Mayan Riviera. Just 10 minutes from Playa del Carmen, this award-winning resort is the perfect escape from everyday cares. It's also a great base for exploring Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

As you stroll along the private beach, cast an eye toward the thatched Mayan roofs in this 180-acre, tropical paradise. When you're ready to challenge wind and water, grab a windsurfing rig from the beach, in front of the resort, and embark on an adventure. Or if you prefer the undersea world, you'll find snorkeling and diving opportunities nearby.

Two, huge, free-form pools occupy more than 30,000 sq ft between the main buildings of Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda and the beach. Designer chaise lounges, deck-side and within the pools, invite guests to take it easy. But you'll also find plenty of activity in the pools, from aquatic spinning to pool volleyball. When you prefer to stay dry, catch a beach volleyball game, or try the two tennis courts.

After an active day, consider pampering yourself with the "Labyrinth of Sensations," at the hotel's state-of-the-art spa. This thermal-bath circuit awakens your body with a footbath, sauna and vapor therapy. The spa offers special packages for couples, as well as for pregnant women.

A dining dilemma awaits you. Should you choose salmon fillet with gorgonzola cheese, accompanied by red-pepper, mashed potatoes and Mediterranean vegetables, at Il Cuore Di Rossi? Or will it be beef medallions in Roquefort sauce, at L'Atelier?

After a great night in one of the rooms or suites at Bluebay Grand Esmeralda, you're ready to start exploring the fascinating, and even haunting, Mayan pyramids at Chichen Itza, about three hours away. Another fun outing near the hotel is Xcaret Park. Snorkel in one of two underground rivers at the park, or swim with dolphins. From its butterfly pavilion to the bat cave and turtle farm, Xcaret Park is as special as this Blue Bay Resort.
