Barcelo Maya Palace
Great experience, the resort activities and food were outstanding.
We just returned from a week of perfect weather from Rivera Maya. This is our annual relax getaway. We try to stay at different places south of Cancun so we get to experience the different stuff the numerous resorts have to offer in Rivera Maya. This time we stayed at Barcelo Maya Palace. You stay here and have access to 5 other resorts in the complex.
First the Positives-
1. The property is clean and well maintained
2. Staff is good and attentive
3. Beach is great- its an inlet so waves break out in the ocean so water is calm, good for young children. Excellent for Snorkeling with plenty of fishes & turtles. They love bananas.
4. Adequate food options (for Palace at least) and food was not bad at all. The French & Mexican were good. Impressive Wine list for this area with real decent selection. As a enophile I always find good wines hard to come by in Mexico. The wines are 25% off list, so make sure you ask for that if you order something from the list. We had a bottle of Chateau Montelena which is again difficult to find down there.
Cons-
1. There is no service by the pools or the beach. This is one thing I absolutely love in these resorts and the lack of service was a big turn off.
2. There was none to minimal entertainment. Not that resort entertainment is that great but still nothing at all is really unacceptable
3. Beach is rocky and the sandy patches might get crowded during peak seasons. We did not have that issue but first week of November is really off peak.
4. Generally the place seemed understaffed
5. The decor and options at the one or two down resorts from Palace seemed better than for Palace where you are paying up.
6. The place is huge and the shuttle service is inadequate. Budget 20mns walk time if your restaurant is at the mall or in far flung resorts down the strip.
7. No WiFi
Overall liked the place but will not go back. I found Iberiostar resorts much better values in terms of location, beach, food, service & entertainment

Overall loved the experience. I wasn’t sure about the resort at first, but I saw so many positive reviews and decided to take the plunge. I Was not disappointed. I picked this spot because you can stay at one resort but visit and enjoy the amenities at the other Barcelo resorts.
The first night was a bit rocky, the room had a musty dated smell that was pretty intense (I’m told it’s from the humidity) after a room change and some air freshener things improved. Great staff. Always accommodating. The rooms however were beautiful. The food and drinks kept coming.. the bars, the nightclub - everything was top notch.
The beaches were clean, not a lot of seaweed as I read in other reviews. They also had many pools, some busy, others quiet almost like your own private oasis.. absolutely amazing.
I highly recommend this resort. They are opening a new adult only section in December. I really want to go back.
Great value for the money!! Don’t hesitate, book it!!

Do any of the 4 Barcelo hotels in the complex have a party/buffet on the beach night?3 answers
8 years, 102 months ago
Kika
Many resorts have parties/buffets on the beach for guests. These resorts do not list a weekly beach party, but they may do them for special occasions and for theme nights.
KristinCC
Didn't see anything like that offered, but it's a great idea. It seemed like the beach got pretty empty at night...everyone went inside for dinner at either the buffet or the restaurants and then nobody went outside again. Most of the entertainment was indoors at night, either eating and drinking at one of the many bars or enjoying the show or dancing. There were very few people outside in the pools or on the beach at night.
lovetoswim
Not sure. Phone them and you can find out
BlueFoot
I do not believe they do....We stayed for a week and there was none.

Is there family friendly entertainment after dinner?

Yes the theater is amazing the whole family will love it its at 930 eveynight and is extremly entertaining every night the feature something different
jackson730
The resort does offer day and nighttime entertainment programs for of all ages.
MariaCC
There are shows every evening in the airconditioned theater. Everything from dance, singing, impersonators, circus and many others.
dolphingirls
You bet. Many activities and places for family and for kids.
BlueFoot
yes - but we only stayed a little while for the shows - we were tired from being busy all day and the shows wre not the greatest - some were bilingual but mostly in spanish - go figure we were in mexiico
fdoyle20
Yes, there is family friendly entertainment. They have an international dance and singing show almost every night at the resort. They were very good. Some of their outfits were very racy, but that is the traditional garb from thos nationalities they were representing.
astricne
The resort, as beautiful and perfect in every other aspect, does lack in this department. The mini disco is every other day at the theater and the rest, at the kiddie club, but the staff is not much into it and my daughter, who usually really wants to participate, opted out each time.
aniak
Barcelo Maya is very family friendly. I saw a kid-friendly movie being shown one night in the Colonial and on another night there was an activity for kids in the evening - they were dancing on stage and playing a game. Again I think that was in the Colonial, but it was easy to get there from the Palace.
SMpacificnw
There are 3 clubs throughout the resort complex that have different shows every night. Some are geared to families and others are not. Depending on the age of your children, there is a kid's club that does activities up until 9 or 10 and there are also activities for teens.
Ridgeview
what activities are there for teenagers?2 answers
Is the disco open to teenagers under 18? do they have an animation group that encourages teenagers to participate in group activities? Is there a club for teenagers?
8 years, 99 months ago
edmund924
This resort does not appear to have a teen club. The resort does offer day and nighttime entertainment programs for of all ages in addition to many sports and other activities. According to one of our customers who stayed here, the theater is amazing and the whole family will love it as everynight is extremly entertaining and features something different.
MariaCC
We had 2 teens in our group that LOVED it. There are nightly activities for them and there is so much to do during the day they will not be bored at all! Just keep in mind drinking age is 18 so if your teen is not used to that then be sure to talk to them before...we saw LOTS of teens that had really had WAY too much to drink especially at the Jaguar Club!!
The Jaguar club is 18+ but the teen club is 13-17. Some of the things that our kids did at the club at night was retro night, kareoke night, ping pong party, there were tons of things, mexican cooking night, dance party, pj and "new movie" night, etc
katiehemt
i do not think they can go into disco but didnt see anyone checking.we had no teenagers but i thought i read they have a teen disco or club

According to several recent reviews on Trip Advisor, the beach is beautiful at Barcelo Maya Palace Deluxe.
MariaCC
Yes, the beach at the Palace is rather rocky, but very beautiful and if you are willing to walk for a few minutes, you can also enjoy the soft sand beach at the next resort. You get the best of both!
aniak
TONS!!! Bring water shoes!!! It makes it really nice to snorkle and see all the fish around them though. Just walk with caution.

There are alot of rocks but it's not terrible. They seem to be grouped together with plenty of nice sand between the groupings

The area is safe and many travelers choose to venture off-property to go shopping, eat, and see the local sights. As with anywhere, it is always wise to be aware of your surroundings and exercise caution at all times.
KristinCC
We only left the resort to go on an excursion. The rest of the time we stayed within the resort complex. Only sign of trouble was when we were leaving Cancun - several police stops but we were never stopped.

Do guests of the Barcelo Maya Palace Deluxe receive meal vouchers?4 answers
Hello,
I have heard that guests staying in Barcelo Maya Tropical and Barcelo Maya Caribe receive meal vouchers for the specialty restaurants. I was wondering if this is true for guests staying at the Maya Palace as well?
7 years, 94 months ago
South Dakota
For guests staying at the Barcelo Maya Palace Deluxe for every night of your stay you are entitled to a dinner in one of the specialty restaurants, including the specialty restaurants of the four other hotels of the complex subject to availability. Kyoto Restaurant is NOT included.
MeganCC
No, the Maya Palace Deluxe is all-inclusive. We were given bracelets to wear that got us into everything. We ate at specialty restaurants all but one night, with ease.
travelmidwife
We did not receive meal vouchers for specialty restaurants.
Ridgeview
It depends on how long your stay is. We were able to reserve up to 3 nights at restaurants when we arrived, but could book the 4th night the next day. The advantage to Palace is you can reserve at any of the restaurants on all 4 resort properties, which can't be done at the other Barceló Maya resorts.

7 years, 94 months ago

The Junior Suite Deluxe room category willl accomodate 5 adults in two double beds and a sofa bed. If you would like to add your daughter to the reservation you will need to call an agent in Existing Reservations who will price that change out for you.
ccsusan1
I think it would be allowed, but I wouldn't recommend. With the all inclusive pricing, I found little/no difference as our family of 5 just went and had 2 rooms (mom and twin 13 year old daughters in one room, dad (me) and 15 year old son in other room)
farndog
You could easily have fit 5 people in the room that my children were in. It had 2 beds and 2 sleeper sofas. We had a king bed and 2 sleeper sofas.

I think you can. we had a king bed and 2 sofas. some rooms have 2 beds and 2 sofas

I've heard it's hard to get into some of the specialty restaurants. when is the best time to make a reservation?
7 years, 93 months ago
twiggy
Reservations can be made in the morning daily.
KellyCC
We went the first day and made reservations for each night of our trip. We were told that one of the restaurants only had a late slot but we asked for a different restaurant and got the time we wanted, did the other restaurant a different day. Another restaurant only opened later but we slept in that day, spent the day in the pool so had lunch at 3:00 and later dinner time was perfect!
travelmidwife
We were only able to make reservations two nights out of the 4 that we were there. Youneed to be flexible in where you want to go and also the time that you want to eat.
Ridgeview
make your reservations when you check in that day for all restaurants you want to eat at . they give you a receipt with your time for each one so you can remember and plan your day.

The times do, in fact, get booked up fast. I strongly recommend making the reservations the day you arrive.

CheapCaribbean.com only sells the Junior Suite Deluxe room category, which comes with one king or two double beds. We do not sell the Family Suite.
KristinCC
I don't know, but I think you should know that we stayed at this beautiful hotel, but would not go again. The rooms are a long way from the dining and lobby. We were in one of the closer buildings and it was more than 1/4 mile from our room to dining. Other than that this is a very beautiful place and the food is great.

The regular rooms were huge. We had two queen beds and two day beds. We were a family of 4, with older children (15 & 23) and had more than enough room for another adult, in a regular room!

The beaches in the Riviera Maya have been known to have some of the best beaches. The beach at this Barcelo overlooks two kilometers of white sand beach with clear blue waters and a natural coral reef. The beach is one of Mexico's most beautiful and is a haven for snorkeling, sailing and windsurfing.
MariaCC
I would go with Cancun. The water at Riveira Maya was very calm. Cancun had great waves that my husband actually got in. We were in the water for at least an hour.

The water is clear. You dont have to walk anywhere. Theres rocks but several clearings inbetween. Very safe for kids.

Why stay at Palace Deluxe over the Colonial and Tropical Beach?2 answers

I don't think you will have any problems if everyone is 18+. and when you check in you just show them your passport and any reservation print outs you have. If you already have the reservations made, they will just look you up. If you want to be able to charge stuff to your room, make sure to give them a ctedit card to keep on file. The only food that is free is the food at the buffets, the food at the poolside bars get charged to your room and the purchases at the shops inside the palace also get charged to your room. Also wines get charged to your room. You only have to be 18 to purchase and consume alcohol.

Prices/Penalties for single occupancy2 answers
Is there pricing or penalties for single occupancy? I noticed that even if I put search for one adult, the fine print says pricing is based on double occupancy.
5 years, 70 months ago
Phoenix, AZ
Prices are based on double occupancy, however you can change the occupancy by changing the amount of people traveling on the right side of the webpage where it says choose your options. There is a drop down box "room one details" that you can change to 1 adult. If you have any questions about the pricing or how to do this please call our Beach Experts at 1-800-915-2322 and they will be happy to assist you!
LizCC
I asked about this and it seems that it would only matter if you brought more than 2 people. If you go alone they don't seem to care.

4 years, 52 months ago
Denver
We left tips at the restaurants and we would tip the staff that helped us with our luggage. I don't think you have to at an all-inclusive resort but we felt the staff did a great job and wanted to leave a little extra for them.
Jordan19
Taxes and tip are included in your package, however, many have reported receiving superior service from staff when they tip. For more information, please call us at 1.800.915.2322.

Tips and taxes are included but you can still leave a tip if the service deserved it.

Is the beach sandy or rocky?5 answers

TimCC
It's very sandy with a few partial rocky areas that you can steer clear of. It does not make swimming difficult at all.
Jinnxx
I would say both. It was not rocky enough to bother with water shoes. If you are careful where you step you are ok. Actually the fish liked to swim close to the rocks.
Mandi3
YES! The beach was solid rocks. We all had to buy water shoes in order to go out in the water...which was FULL of seaweed. Awful. The sand was only about an inch thick before it was hard as a rock. Sand castles were impossible for the kids.
LaurieM
Yes, lots of rocks. A quick walk down the beach offers a more sandy beach at the other end of the resort. Despite the rocks, the ocean is gorgeous.

What specifically does the fully fitted bathroom with luxury amenities include?
Shampoo?
Conditioner?
Body wash?
Others?
2 years, 29 months ago
Mandi
Bathrooms will include shampoo, conditioner, body gel, and hand soap. Sometimes they will include bug spray and moisturizer, although not every resort does this.
CCGreg
I asked this original question because I wanted to know how to pack and had a limited amount of space for toiletries.
After visiting, I was pleased that the bathroom had a dispenser with shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel (all were refilled during our stay). Also there was 2 facial bars of soap, 1 massaging bar of soap, container of bath salts. They had a shave kit (razor and shave cream), comb, sewing kit, moisturizing lotion, shower cap, dental kit (toothbrush and toothpaste), and shoe polisher.
They did not have bug spray (however that was never needed during our stay).
Mandi2
shampoo, conditioner & body wash in a dispenser in the shower. Note: the conditioner isn't great. If your hair tangles, bring a little bottle from home - or treat yourself to a little bottle from Bloomish (think mini Lush if you're familiar) in the mall.
On the vanity - a sewing kit, a toothbrush & tooth paste, a shower cap... a few bars of soap... can't remember what else, but there were a few little boxes of stuff I honestly never even opened. Not sure what was in them.
george4975
Shampoo, Conditioner, body wash, comb, toothbrush, razor. I packed these things and quickly regretted having wasted the space in the luggage once we arrived and realized everything we needed was pretty much there.
weber1432
Hi Mandi!
I just got back from Barcelo Maya Palace in the Junior Suite and they had shampoo, conditioner and bath gel in pumps attached to the shower wall. There was a hair dryer and shower cap provided as well as a shaving kit, lotion (small hotel sample bottle) and a dental kit that had a toothbrush and toothpaste. There were double sinks and the bathroom had a walk in shower to the left as well as a tub with a sprayer shower. The toilet was to the right with a glass door for privacy. Any other questions, let me know!
