Beach Bliss

This was our second time to Barcelo Maya Palace and it was wonderful. The grounds are so clean and the rooms are very clean and comfortable. There was so much good food to eat it. The Barcey kids club is a fun and safe place to take your kiddos. I would recommend this resort to people who want luxury with a relaxed feel. The water was calm and the beach is raked daily.

BEACH PARADISE

Let's start with the cons (they are very few): #1 - check in. I don't understand how we booked 9 months earlier and they put us in a room that seemed to be a mile from the beach. Humberto was very helpful in getting us moved to a much closer room - but it took an hour of our vacation time and that's TOO MUCH. I wish we could book the room we want when we booked originally. I also would like to make dinner reservations before we arrive. That said - every person behind the desk was patient and kind. I can't understand the reviews I've read otherwise. We've been there 6 times and have NEVER encountered anyone behind the desk that wasn't very kind and helpful. #2 - the resort is huge. They have done a fab job of making everything accessible - but don't get in a hurry. Nothing is close to anything. The buses are a life saver for those in our family with limited walking abilities. Now for the PROS: #1 - the beach is amazing. We saw maybe 15-20 varieites of fish, sea turtles, sting rays, an eel, star fish - probably more I'm forgetting. If you enjoy the beach - this is the place. The water was crystal clear. My daughter and husband did the water trike for the first time (no charge) and really enjoyed it. Swimming at the pier was lots of fun. Great memories and great pictures. #2 - the staff is wonderful. I wish I could remember all the names - because everyone we encountered (except one bartender at the adult pool) was exceptional. Lucio Chi - our favorite - is a waiter at the buffet. He has a gift of making our family (12 of us - 8 adults, 4 kids) feel like we were his priority. He remembered details and saw that every need was taken care of. Always smiling - such a great guy - we've decided he's an honorary member of our family. All of the staff at the restaurants were really great. I never saw anyone that wasn't seeing to something/someone. They earn every dollar. The activities staff was a ton of fun this year. The staff had a different feel - more dancers/party vibe --- in the past it's had more of a athletic/games feel. Both are fun and our girls (10-16) loved them!!! I left 1 note for housekeeping - asking for 4 washcloths (rather than the 2 a day they usually leave). A note must have been made because there were 4 left every day after that. Our room was always clean, well kept and well stocked. #3 - the grounds are beautiful and manicured perfectly. It seems no details are unchecked. The beach is raked every day. No trash, no sea weed, few rocks. TONS of chairs. We never had trouble finding chairs at the beach or the pool - even though the resort was at 85% capacity. #4 - the spa. 4 of the adults had at least one massage. Everyone raved about it and the prices weren't far off from what we would pay at our local spa. Our 4 girls had a kids massage and I'm afraid we've created divas. They loved them. There was a little confusion at the spa about reservations, but they were quickly fixed and the atmosphere is really nice. Very relaxing and upscale. #5 - the Mexican market/ mall - fun place to spend an evening. Lots of repetitiveness - but the vendors are friendly if you stop to talk to them - and something for everyone. We found souvenirs for a few people and negotiated a price that was good enough. I'm leaving out a lot. We have been to the Palace 6 times - and I'm ready to plan next years trip.

Very nice resort

This resort has ample space and can comfortably accommodate just about everyone at all times. We went 11/15 so a bit before the Thanksgiving rush and loved having a bit less of the crowds but even as the weekend started to amp up and the crowds starting arriving, there was never a lack of service or space. Plenty of beach chairs, pool space and restaurant space. The buffets offer lots of options and restaurants are good. I do feel with the restaurants they want you in and out as quickly as possible but I suppose its the only way to accommodate so many people. But with that said there are plenty of places to hang out comfortably and have a drink after. The staff was very nice and did their best to serve or assist you. There were some language barriers to contend with but I think its to be somewhat expected. We had a junior suite for 3 people. 2 double beds that I wished were queens but we did ok. The room itself is a little on the loud side and I don't think the bathrooms are set up for much privacy, although it looks very nice. I loved that you could be totally engaged in activities here or find quieter areas too. I would love to go back again!

2nd trip but not as good as the 1st

This was our second vacation to the Barcelo Maya palace. The service was excellent and the beach is always wonderful. However, the food was definitely substandard. At the grill, I was served muscles that were still frozen inside and my daughter was served a raw hamburger. The food tasted of poor quality from what I remember on our first visit. Even my husband's creme brûlée, from one of the nicer restaurants, was the consistency of soup. In talking with other guests who have stayed at this resort multiple times, they also felt the quality had declined over the years. We will probably search for a new place to stay on our next visit to Mexico.

The anxiety-ousting spa with the flotation tank, Swiss shower & reflexology.

What We'd Change

It's 47 miles south of the airport - just enough time to unwind before you hit Beach Eden.

Don't miss the Dolphinarium, where you can shake fins with these friendly, smiling critters.

For splashy fun, there's windsurfing & water trikes. For less water, try mini-golf.

There's tennis, beach volleyball & a fitness center - or a pool table if you just want to hang.
