Amazing hotel very huge so many options

This hotel has something for everyone. It literally has a mall inside of it. Only negatives you have to pay for wifi and the buffet food is pretty average

Good experience

We have just arrived home from our vacation at the Barcelo Maya Colonial and Tropical . We stayed at the Tropical for five nights. We are a family of five ( kids are 15,13 and 9). We had a great time . It is a very nice resort. There are five hotels in the whole resort( soon to be 6), and no matter where you are staying, you have access to the amenities in all the hotels. The beach is beautiful and big. There are plenty of palm trees for shade and even though the place was very crowded during the weekend, we didn’t have trouble finding a spot every morning . It is a sand beach, but there are many rocks in the water, so water shoes are a must. That’s said, the rocks make it more interesting. Also there are areas with no rocks at all. And if you swim a little far, there are no rocks either. The water is clean and crystal clear with lots of fish. We saw stingrays and my kids swam with the turtles almost every day. So bring your snorkeling gear! Also, you can get snorkeling gear at the diving center at the hotel. It is situated next to the dolphinarium. You can borrow the gear for a $50 deposit. I’m not sure how long you can have it for, but I believe is a hour a day. It might be even longer. In the diving center they offer trips and activities at a cost. We did the snorkeling trip. I really recommend it. They take you to a reef half hour away from the hotel. It was beautiful. The pools are huge and clean. My boys enjoyed the nets and basketball hoops in the pool. They also have a basketball court and a beautiful soccer field. There are two small playing areas near the pools with water slides , fountains and so on . These are great for little kids and up to 10/11 years old. My 9 year old daughter had a blast in them. There is a bigger water park for big kids . That one you have to pay for. It is situated by the Maya Mall (yes, there is a shopping mall . Not much to say about it because I don’t like malls) . It costs $20 per kid per day. My kids didn’t use it, so I don’t have much information about it. The food is ok. As it is my husband and my older son didn’t feel well the last day. We had the right to go to two a l’cart restaurants ( it depends on how many days you are staying) . We went to La Fuente ( Spanish) and Capri ( Italian) and we liked both. Make sure you make the reservations for all the a l’cart restaurants as soon as possible. Some of them are very popular and they get full very quickly. Also be aware that the reservations close at 3pm every day . The reservations are made at the guest service office. The main office is at the lobby, but also there is a guest service lady in the first floor of each building ( I mean the buildings where the rooms are) . That is very convenient and they are very nice and always ready to help. The rest of the time we ate at the buffets. Breakfast is served at the main buffet. It was very good. A lot of different things and good quality. Lunch, we had at the buffet near the beach and pools. It was very convenient, but there was not much selection and sometimes they could not keep up with the demand. We didn’t try lunch at the main buffet. Dinner was ok at the main buffet ( beach one closes at 6) . There was a lot to choose from, but I wasn’t very impressed by the quality. In general we were surprised at the level of cleanses at the resort, even though it was very crowded at days. Also, since it seems it’s a big problem in the area, we didn’t have any problem with sea weeds . I don’t know if this is because of the time of the year . The rooms were simple, but nice and clean. The people working at the hotel were very nice and polite. We didn’t attend to the night shows, but it seems they have one every night. Overall it was a nice experience. It is a big resort, but the lay out makes it easy to handle.

Barcelo Tropical in Novemeber

Beautiful resort with walk-able beach. Food was fresh, could have been hotter at the buffet. Liked walking all the resorts. Maya Beach was most interesting design wise. Could us Palapas on the beach...tough to find shade. Water crystal clear. Stayed in building closest to the beach which is close to pool also. Our sliding door screen was ripped upon arrival, took a couple of persistent days of requests before it was replaced. One day they forgot to clean our room. All in all a very good place and time for a reasonable cost No Yoga classes but a stretch class in the morning. Would be nice to have coffee available at the pool in AM so don't have to walk all the way to buffet for cup.

Loved this resort!

If you love BIG resorts then look no further. This is 6 Barcelo resorts side-by-side with 1 mile of beach! Stay at 1 play at all - the Adults only (which opens next month) & the Palace would be the only restrictions unless you're staying in one of those. We stayed at Barcelo Tropical which was perfect. Barcelo has excellent water "toys" available to just sign out with your room #. Hoby Cats, clear bottom canoes, 1 & 2 person kyaks, paddle boards, wind surfers and these paddle "bikes" with 3 huge wheels that float on the water...so cool! Excellent service of course...it's a Mexican resort, they all have great service! I chose this resort to check out for my daughters wedding in 2021. There were Beautiful weddings every day while we were there. It's perfect - price is right and they're so big they can accommodate everyone! I'm excited to go back!

What's to Love

A tropical rainforest surrounds the resort with over a mile of a private, white sandy beach.

Resort is mega-sized of fun - you have access to Barcelo Maya Beach and Barcelo Maya Caribe.

The swim-up bars at the pools will likely be your favorite go-to bars during the day.

Lively entertainment at night - theatrical shows and live music keep the party going.

Activities like an 18-hole mini golf, 4-lane bowling alley and video games at Strikers.

What We'd Change

The 45 mile trek from the airport is a bit much, but the pools, kid's club and water park for kids up to age 12 more than make up for it.

Why You Should Go

Located in Riviera Maya, you're just forty miles from the airport. A fruity cocktail awaits you.

Pack your water shoes - so many bright colored fish and turtles to see in the ocean.

The fitness center is modern and updated with the latest equipment.

The Dolphinarium is just off the beach and includes acrobatics + dolphins.

You can take a public shuttle to Tulum, Akumal or Playa del Carmen - it's cheap & fun exploring.
