We will come back!
I would definitely recommend this resort! The staff are very friendly and helpful. It would be nice if there were more gluten free options and better labels on some of the foods available. I would also be sure to request at least a queen size bed. The room we were in had two double size which we found too small for two people but the room and view were wonderful.

Not the Place To Go For a Quiet Family Holiday
Our extended family of 10 (including 6 adult children, 2 grandchildren and my wife and I) did a “bucket list” family holiday to Barcelo Maya Colonial in early February. We had 4 rooms between the 4 families. I should mention that we are all tolerant people and not ones who complain… ever. We expect some noise and the usual kinds of things one would deal with at a resort. The Colonial is an open concept building with all 3 floors being open to the outside and one another. Any noise on any floor is amplified throughout the part of the building it was initiated in. Since the alcohol flows freely nearly 24/7, people will return at all hours throughout the night speaking loudly and in many cases, yelling, which can wake one up many times during their sleep. The resort entertainment (in the open air theatre) while somewhat “entertaining”, continues until 11:00pm which means that trying to find a quiet place to sit in the evening and listen the ocean and wind blowing through the palms is impossible. The music blankets all areas of the resort. (And good luck if you try to get to sleep before 11:00pm.) Finally, if you happen to have loud, rude, inconsiderate neighbours who decide to play their own music through the night after returning from the bars (which we did) the resort does very little to deal with the issue. We made a face to face, calm request to the neighbours to keep the noise down which didn’t work. Multiple phone calls were made to the front desk on successive nights, by two of our party and only on the last call on the night before we departed did security knock on their door to quiet them down. It didn’t change anything very much at all. Our initial call was met with indifference and we were told that we could be moved (why should WE move?) but that it might not make any difference. That should tell you all you need to know. So, if you are looking for a quiet, peaceful, relaxing getaway, find another place. However, if you enjoy a constant buzz, noise and a party atmosphere, this could be your place.

Good stay but worse room maintenance
Please provide toiletries and basic room essentials everyday. You do not provide any basic amenities: No dental kit, no shaving kit, no shoe cleaner, no extra slippers, I did not receive any of these items even for one single day during my 5 day stay. You do not replenish anything, not even 1 soap. Even you do not replenish the coffee pouches. Twice i had to call front desk to get coffee pouch. This is cheap and absurd considering Barcelo being a premium property. No one answers the housekeeping number, even if they do they cannot speak or understand English. You have to call front desk / reception in case you need anything. This looks like a cheap $100 dollar per night motel. Even they provide the basic amenities. Too bad housekeeping experience!

will not return
cleanliness, service and food was our biggest concern. We left the towels on the floor in the bathroom as per their request that if we want clean towels leave them there.. 5 days they stayed there. no gluten options. service at the bar in the evening was lacking and they were busy chatting with each other rather than assisting the guests. Grounds are lovely, but huge!

Worst hotel experience ever
If you want to enjoy your vacation, avoid this hotel at all costs. Half of the hotel was taken over by agencies – in our case Wasting Time – which fill the hotel with 15+ year-old teenagers who cause constant chaos. They run drunk through the accommodation blocks until early morning, scream, bang on other guests doors, and behave extremely disrespectfully. Despite several complaints from us and many other guests, the hotel did absolutely nothing. We even spoke personally with the hotel manager, who was completely incompetent and unwilling to resolve the situation. If you want to get at least some sleep at night and enjoy a peaceful vacation, stay far away from this hotel.
