Great Experience

Everyone has a different idea of the perfect vacation, and this was mine. Facilities; the hotel was outstanding, looks to be brand new, very well maintained with a great layout. Room; was comparable to a Hampton Inn, with a very nice bathroom and balcony. Buffets; there was 4 available with a wide variety of food, including freshly made to order options. Restaurants; plenty of high end options. Bar's; served name brand liquor with generous pours. Pools; everywhere you looked was water. Beach; 2 miles of white sand, calm waters, and you can walk 5 mins towards the ocean and still be in 4 foot of water which was very relaxing. Water Sports; plenty of free options as well as motorized sports, and classes available. This is my personal time share for now on.

Meh...

The grounds are nice. Check in staff was mediocre at best. Provided very little information about the facilities etc. our first room was awful. Musty and dirty and not in the actual section of the resort we paid for. We requested to be moved and our second room was much nicer and clean. The food was okay, but even “hot” dishes were cold. Make sure to make dinner reservations for your entire stay right after check in, they have the best food, but prime time slots and availability fill up fast! The beach is nice and there are plenty of chairs. the pools are cold (which is obvious by the lack of people in them), but you get waaaaay better service at the swim up bar. There’s an attempt to offer “excursions” on site, but your money and time would be better spent leaving the resort for a richer experience. We did the Quad/cenote one and it was fun and our guide was very knowledgeable, but the places outside the resort provide a much more authentic experience. We rode on the beach for about one minute and then through the streets of the resort (yuck) and finally the “jungle” (they’ve created a round about way to go the 15 feet just to make you feel like you have done something). The cenote is tiny, but cool. The snorkeling at the resort is dumb. There’s just no other way to put it. If you want to snorkel, do the trip to Cozumel. Or better yet, go stay in Cozumel. We had an okay time. I wouldn’t come back, but it was what it was. Also, we would probably not use cheap Caribbean again. This is our second time and the first was fine, but this time they booked flights that didn’t have luggage or seat assignments included. Neither of these things did we learn about until we were at the airport. Spending a surprise $150 on luggage and not sitting together was not cool! Furthermore, when we landed, the company they use for transfers didn’t have us on both lists so we had to wait for a van with available room to show up. If you book your travel with them, be aware that you will need to find the transfer companies booth on the property and check in the following morning only for them to tell you you have to come back on a different morning to get the new paper (yes, you actually have to go both times, /and no they aren’t on time and sometimes they just don’t show up). Kinda annoying to have to keep dealing with arrangements you thought were already handled... especially if you have activities planned during the 3 hours they might be there.

Barcelo

The beach is the best part of this resort. Absolutely the best in the area. Food in the buffet was always tepid or cool. you would think they could find the technology that they have here stateside to keep a buffet hot. I was pretty disappointed in that. Your best bet is to have fresh eggs made, or fresh meat grilled at dinner. Lots of selection of cold foods, breads, but not a potatoe chip in sight lol. Our room was located close to the pool and beach which I liked and close to the buffet. One thing is our room did have a worn out coverlet with holes. Also It was nice they provided soft drinks and beer in the room although the fridge didn't keep things very cold. Service staff with the exception of the front desk and workers who arrange your ala cart meals were wonderful. They gave us super early dinners at 5:30 or 5:45 so it really interrupted our schedule. We flew in from the west coast and our normal dinner hour is 7:30. Eating at 5:30 every eve was like eating in the afternoon. We asked for later dinner times but were told they were already to full. We really loved all the service staff. They were really wonderful. We found that rather than buying trinkets or spending our money purchasing mementos we loved giving tips and gratuities. The service staff were warm and welcoming and treated us like family. We found that they made our trip so wonderful. If we ever decide to return, it will be for the beach and the service staff. We will probably book excursions to eat outside the hotel to get a hot meal. But, all in all it was a pleasant trip and we enjoyed the opportunity to check the Barcelo out.

Best Beach from Cancun to Tulum

Pros: Beach Beach Beach...snorkeling off the hook. Kindness of servers. Rooms comfortable but average. Buffet better than average. Cons: when you check in your they say you get to eat 3 nites at there restaurants but when you go to make a reservation they are booked all week. That was a big disappointment because the eating at the buffet all week gets old.
