A great two weeks at Sunscape

Just returned from our first stay at the Sunscape. We were pleased with the overall resort. Room had a great view , good A/C, water was replenished daily, kept spotless by Guadalupe. She always had a pleasant “ good morning” for us. We had purchased the Sunclub and really appreciated the covered beach area and the beachside restaurant where we had breakfast and lunch most days. Special thanks to the great service from Tomas, Alicia, Ignacio (Nacho) and Emmanuel. We didn’t spend any time in the Sunclub lobby lounge, other than to get a great margarita or martini from Marcel. On our first day Reme was very helpful in getting our room sorted out. Our favourite restaurant was the DeMario (Italian). Viridiano, , Miguel, and Roger took good care of us. We liked the fact that we didn’t need to make reservations. Only issue was that pool area was very crowded and it was difficult to get a chair in the shade.

Worst hotel i have ever stayed at

Firstly, the condition of our room severely impacted our safety and enjoyment. The door had a significant crack around the frame and would not close properly, causing us constant anxiety about our security. Furthermore, the sliding door to the patio did not lock, leading to a balcony that appeared to be in a state of disrepair, with cracks and crumbling stucco. I felt particularly anxious about my 2-year-old son accessing the balcony, prompting us to move furniture to block his access. The glass railing surrounding the balcony was especially concerning. It appeared flimsy and unstable, with visible cracks and signs of wear. At various points, the glass seemed to be wobbly, raising alarms about its structural integrity. Some sections appeared to be glued in place, which only heightened my anxiety about the safety of the balcony. I couldn't shake the feeling that it was a serious risk, especially with a young child. This constant worry overshadowed our trip, leading to stress rather than the relaxation we sought. Additionally, the elevator posed a serious safety hazard. As we approached the elevator, I noticed it was malfunctioning; the doors seemed to be operating unpredictably. While entering, the doors suddenly shut abruptly and forcefully, nearly trapping my son. If another guest hadn't quickly slammed his arms against the doors to prevent them from closing on my child, the outcome could have been disastrous. I was alarmed by the lack of warning and the sheer force with which the doors closed. After the incident, I immediately reported the malfunction to the front desk, where the staff member assured me he would report it and shut down that elevator for safety. However, throughout the day, I observed that no such action was taken. In fact, another guest approached me later to share that they had encountered a similar issue with the elevator days prior and had also reported it, yet nothing had been done. This lack of responsiveness to a critical safety concern is deeply troubling and unacceptable. My son also experienced a skin reaction shortly after using the pool, which appeared dirty during our visit. The staff's explanations for the pool's condition were unsatisfactory, especially as my son's health was affected. Finding treatment for his hives was an ordeal; the hotel’s lack of available supplies forced me to seek medication off-site. I went to a nearby pharmacy hoping to find Benadryl, only to discover that I was charged an outrageous price of 670 pesos (approximately $42) for a bottle that would typically cost around $10 in the U.S. This significant markup was not only frustrating but added to my stress during an already difficult situation. The food quality was another area of concern. The first two days, the meals were subpar, leading us to seek dining outside the hotel due to hunger. It was alarming to see such discrepancies in service quality based on our appearance, especially when we observed different treatment towards other guests. On multiple occasions, I noticed that staff were more attentive and accommodating to guests who appeared to be of European descent, while we frequently felt overlooked and dismissed. For instance, when I asked for an outdoor table at breakfast, I was denied despite seeing a large group of blonde-haired, blue-eyed guests being seated outside without hesitation. This consistent pattern of preferential treatment based on appearance was not only disappointing but also hurtful, making us feel unwelcome and undervalued during our stay. Lastly, I was offended when hotel staff questioned my right to take a towel from the beach while my husband, who is white, faced no such scrutiny. This inconsistency felt discriminatory and added to our discomfort during our stay. This trip was supposed to be a restful getaway for my family, but instead, it was the complete opposite. The experience we received was far from what was advertised for a 4-star resort. We expected a serene and enjoyable environment, but what we encountered was a rundown facility with significant safety concerns and inadequate service. In conclusion, the combination of safety issues, inadequate service, and perceived discriminatory treatment made our experience at Sunscape Dorado far from enjoyable.

    Trip with my Family

I really enjoyed the bike trip with Jessica. She was really nice and easy to talk to, even as a tourist.

    We really enjoyed our stay!

The resort was very clean, food was very good (first time we didn't get sick in Mexico, despite eating lots of salads, fruit, and other uncooked items). The beachwas nice (waves were a bit high sometimes, not great for swimming, but great for walking and watching life go by. Views from the rooms are great (all rooms are ocean facing). Beach was very nice, pool was quite crowded. This is a family resort, with tons of kids around the pool, so don't expect an adult oriented experience. The ratio of guests was about 75-80% young Mexican families, and about 20-25% older North American couples. Accessibility was very good compared to some resorts we have visited. There are two Palapas (four lounge chairs each) by the pool dedicated for handicapped only use. Security would remove towels placed by others if they noticed them being placed. Otherwise they would ask people to move when we showed up and asked to use it. Wheelchair ramps were in most places (including to the beach), with the exception of the Lobby Bar and a couple of shops. For the Buffet (Windows), they have three steps up to the food area, so self-service is difficult (staff will bring you items if you ask, or have a travelling companion get it for you). The buffet patio has steps down from the main area, but you can check in at the entrance, and then use ramps to enter the patio by the pool/garden area. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Download the resort app (there's a QR code on your room key envelope) for restaurant hours and menus. The buffet (Windows) was great for breakfast, including an omelette station, a crepe station, and a Mexican (quesadillas, gorditas, etc) station . They do a themed dinner buffet pretty much every night, including 3-4 nights/week in the garden with a corresponding entertainment event. Food for dinner in the buffet was okay (good, but not outstanding). Blue Water Grill was very good for lunch and dinner (open 2 nights for International, 2 nights for Mexican (under the name Tamarindo). They are also open 2 days a week for breakfast, which was good, although it is all buffet style, and I thought the Windows buffet breakfast was better. Da Mario (Italian) was okay. Reasonable variety, but one or two meat dishes were overcooked. They are open every night for dinner. Overall, I thought the resort was very good.
