HORRIBLE!!!! STAY AWAY PLEASEEEEEEEEEEE
THE WORST EXPERIENCE I EVER HAD!!!!! I booked this vacation as a birthday gift for my boyfriend. Check-in was a breeze, I got us the Suite-Jacuzzi room which was nice but had its cons.
CONS IN THE SUITE:
1. The TV had a Netflix option which we thought was pretty cool since 90% of their channels were in Spanish. When we went to set it up and sign in, we had many difficulties, so we call the front desk. He told us the TV wasn't compatible.. basically saying it was just for show.
2. Housekeeping only gave us 1 ROBE and it was never a complete cleaning done, some days they would leave the food we put outside our room to be thrown away sitting in front of our door still just moved to a different spot, they would forget to give us clean robes if one of them was dirty, and didn't restock our fridge
3. Our next-door neighbor had a crying baby that just kept crying!!
PROS IN THE SUITE:
1. THE VIEW WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!!!
2. The jacuzzi on the balcony and the hot tub in the room gave the room such a romantic setting.
CONS FOR THE RESORT:
1. THIS IS NOT AN ADULTS ONLY RESORT!!!!!!! KIDS EVERYWHEREEEEEEEEE!!!!!! IN THE POOL, IN THE LOBBY, STAYING IN THE HOTEL, AT THE RESTAURANTS... EVERYWHERE!!!!!
2. This resort doesn't take any USD must convert your money into pesos
3. Restaurants such as the Mexican restaurant and Japanese restaurant was closed every day I was there. The steakhouse was HORRIBLE. The only good restaurant they had was an Italian restaurant and a buffet.
4. Pool closes at 6/7
5. Customer service SUCKS!!!! I requested a birthday decor set-up in our suite on the day of my boyfriend's birthday and requested dinner on the beach. I called multiple times and spoke to a representative at the resort to make sure everything was in place and each time they confirmed I had nothing to worry about. We checked on 10/30/19, his birthday was 10/31. On 10/31 we had left the resort to do an excursion when we came back from the excursion I asked the front desk if the room was set-up they looked at me confused and said they had no clue what I was talking about. After a few minutes of going back and forth, they looked into the notes and saw my request and told me that it was done. I then asked about the dinner on the beach, what time do we come down and where do we go. He responded by saying that was not set up how I had discussed that with customer service which I told him I did and he responded by saying its nothing he can do because nothing was set up... I ignored the fact that they ruined my boyfriends surprise dinner and took him upstairs to surprise him with the room decor
WHEN WE GOT UPSTAIRS AROUND 7/8 PM THERE were NO DECORATIONS AT ALLLLLLL!!!!!!! $3000 I SPENT ON THIS ROOM WITH DETAILED REQUEST WAISTED!!!!!! I WOULD NEVER GO BACK TO THIS RESORT.
Japanese restaurant foods: I would not recommend this food to any Asians who actually eat Japanese foods.I will give 30 points out of 100.
Counter personnel could be more friendly. Many had no facial expressions, I felt like talking to robots.
Buffet food quality: little better than Golden Coral.
Pools and beaches are well maintained.
My refrigerator was not even plugged in when I arrived.
Taxi fair to the airport is $40.
Massage facility's jacuzzi & steam room needs some maintenance. Steam room was not even in operation. Jacuzzi water was not warm, and massage was not so relaxing. $75 per an hour was not worth it.
Let me just say we went to another highly rated resort this past summer and truly confirmed how good the Riu Palace Peninsula is. The Riu is head and shoulders above the rest. Love Alex the door man what a great first impression. Service is fabulous from bartenders to waiter/waitress to the lady’s who clean the rooms Food is always great and love the lunch service by the pools Lobby bar music is so nice and the coffee bar is great. Will he back in March.
riu peninsula was a good value but, three people made it great .Dianah in the activities department was too kind to give us sun screen which we forgot, Nina the server was so friendly and took care of all our needs that I wanted to adopt her,and Ivonne at the front desk every time I had a problem she immediately took care of it. With these three people the Riu will always be my first choice.

Could the offer be extended to August?1 answer
Looking for a nice, new resort, all inclusive for myself and my family (5 adults and one 8 yr. old) to spend for my 60th birthday! Interested in this package, but birthday isn't til Aug. 16th. Could the offer be extended til then?
7 years, 95 months ago
Linda
Hi Linda,
We are, unfortunately, unable to extend this particular offer as the resort has extended this package only through June. I suggest checking the website periodically to see if the resort is offering any new deals available for the dates you are expecting to travel. Our properties are always offering new specials and since August is the "slow" season I expect that you will be seeing some wonderful specials offered for the summer months.

Could I stay the 3 nights at your hotel but schedule my return flight for a later date?1 answer
7 years, 93 months ago
Bay area
Yes, you may schedule your return for a later date however you must book that trip with an agent. You will not be able to book that trip online. Please keep in mind that there is no additional charge to book with one of our experienced Beach Experts. Also, if the resort has availability for additional days, you are able to book more than the three day minimum requirement at the special rate, by simply clicking on the desired date of return

Is the beach sandy or rocky7 answers
7 years, 92 months ago
pconovalciuc
Riu Palace Peninsula is located in Cancun's resort area and sits along a beautiful stretch of white sand beach.
MariaCC
Both, there is plenty of sand, but there are some rocky areas also, which are very pretty. Plenty of pretty powdery white sand though. We played out in the water several times, the sand was very clean.
teterbug
Sandy cove.... and on other side is sand a top rocks but has cut out to walk sand below.... actually we really liked it.....
FooxynRooster
Both. But it's really nice.
Pappy
The beach here is very sandy. There are some rocks on the point for some great pictures, but everywhere else is sandy. They have many chairs and umbrellas so you may sit right on the beach, and drinks are brought to you. :)
OsBeevo
They actually have two different types of beach areas which are separated by a corner rock peninsula area. The one side is mostly sand with a rock "drop off" that is can be easily walked down to get to the water at which point the water is free of rocks, stones and seaweed (we preferred this side). The other side seemed a bit rockier while also having a bit of seaweed build up.
mcatsam
Fairly rocky but lots of pockets of sand. If you want to "walk" on a sandy beach then this is not the place to go. If you simply want a sandy spot to sun and sandy water then you're fine

Can you visit the other three Riu hotels while staying at this one?6 answers
Are you allowed free entrance to the other Riu hotels located in the hotel zone?
7 years, 92 months ago
Gal from Indy
Yes, you have access to all the riu hotels and their amenities.
teterbug
According to Riu's website, when staying at Riu Palace Peninsula, you have access to the facilities of the neighbouring Riu Caribe during the day.
MariaCC
Yes... The Riu next door is closed and under full remodel...
FooxynRooster
Yes. The Riu Penisula is a 5 star rated resort. Therefore that grants you access to all the other Riu's in Cancun. The one that sits next door to the penisula isn't really worth visiting. They have a nice pool but that's about it. It's pretty old. The Palace which is near the "downtown" area is very nice I've heard and there's the Riu Cancun which is pretty massive but we did not visit either.
Pappy
Yes! You can visit any of the Riu Hotels while in Cancun at no charge. You may even eat and drink at no extra charge... we did it!
OsBeevo
Yes. There are a total of 4 RIU hotels in Cancun and you are allowed to visit 3 of the 4 while enjoying the same benefits if staying in the RUIPP. The front desk will be able to explain to you better which of the 4 you cannot visit when you check in but I believe it is one of the ones closer to the party area.

what is the best time of the year to visit Cancun?3 answers
7 years, 90 months ago
Suz
Cancun is lovely any time of the year, however most people prefer to travel during the months of January through the end of April. This is considered the "dry" season so the threat of rain is reduced. Keep in mind, that because the weather is nicer during that time prices generally tend to be higher. You may find cheaper packages available during the summer months, which also begins the Hurricane Season.
ccsusan1
If you go around November, this is the slow season for Cancun, and it's after Hurricane season. Prices will be lower, the staff will be more attentive, and it won't be as crowded or hot. The temperature stays in the high 70's to low 80's. Very nice.

It is always good to be precautious and drink bottled water.
MariaCC
I honestly did not take a chance. The Riu Plaza Peninsula, where I stayed, provides you with many bottles of water to use for brushing your teeth and to drink as a beverage. I never drank the water at the restaurants but I guess I did dabble a bit when my mix drinks were made with ice.
EricScott
Drink only bottled water; they give you as much as you need. The local tour guide told us the locals only drink bottled water.
Family2039
Yes. Drink bottled water only. The RIU Palace Penisula daily stocks rooms with bottled water, soft drinks, beer, and liquor.

What type of activities are there to do with older kids?4 answers
We aren't interested in putting our kids in the "kids' program" that is mentioned because we are on a family vacation and want to do things with them. That said, are there a lot of activities geared toward families with kids at the resort?
What types of activities - mini-golf, volleyball, etc. are there to do other than just swim? Plus, are there any "fast-food or snack" places around the pools or at the beach?
7 years, 85 months ago
ELLEKID
The resort does offer daily and nightly entertainment, however, the entertainment schedule changes so would not be available until arrival at the resort. Also offered at the resort, are catamaran sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and snorkeling. You can also purchase daily excursions off property with a tour company located on site at the resort.
MariaCC
Got back on Sunday. Volleyball in the pool, ping pong table, use snorkeling gear for an hour each day - fish near rocky shore, sea kayaks you can borrow. The almost nightly show at 9:30pm changes and was kid appropriate; they had beach party on Saturday night instead. Dual waverunners are extra $65 for half hour. If you know how to sail, you can take a cat out. If you want more than this along with the pool (closes at 7pm) and waveless beach, it would not be a good fit. My 14 and 16 year olds were a bit bored, but would have not liked the teen clubs either.
Lunch was available poolside - theme changed but not a lot of choices. Buffet lunch was good, not far from poolside, and you can go in your coverup and eat on the outdoor area. The Sports Bar snacks available 24/7 were good for fruit, stadium nachos/cheese, so-so premade sandwiches, and hot dogs we did not try. Sports Bar is close to pools also. They served buffet lunch 12:30-4 and then snacks 4-6. We never did hit the buffet during snack time.
DeannainVa
There is volleyball, kayaks, snorkelling, 5 pools, 2 beach areas, one food place is always open, drinks/snacks poolside, snack and bar open 24/7 in lobby, and tons of excursions you can do.
Family2039
Our kids are grown, but there is a volleyball area, jet skis to be rented, different water sports available. At the pool during lunch areas, hamburgers and hot dogs are grilled. The sports bar has video games, premade sandwiches, burgers, chips, etc available 24 hours. The ferry to Isla Mujeres is a 2 minute walk from the hotel and is very cheap. You don't' have to do a tour there, just take the ferry. There is a turtle farm and other things to do.

Are the other RIU's close enough for a bus ride? We stayed at the Cancun Palace before and loved this option! We took a bus to both hotels and had a great day getaway!

Yes, there are several Riu properties right down the road!
KellyCC
yes, one is right next door
muppy
Riu Palace Peninsula is right next to the Riu Las Americanas, we walked over there and used their pools as well.
BeachSandGuy
There is actually another RIU located right next door to the Palace Peninsula and the others are less than 5 minutes away via bus. Also, there are bus stops located within 3-5 minutes walking from the front of the RUIPP.
mcatsam
One is next door; the others are probably 10 min via bus which stops every 5-10 min and is suppose to cost $1

There is one next to Riu palace peninsula, you can even walk to by the beach to it. The other resorts are still close by using the bus about 5 or 10 min depending which one you are traveling to.

is topless sunbathing permitted?7 answers
I've read that topless sunbathing is ok for some places and others it not.
6 years, 83 months ago
michigan, US
As this resort is family-friendly, the resort most likely does not recommend topless sunbathing.
MariaCC
Not here. My wife and I walked up and down for a few miles, did not see any topless beaches.
BeachSandGuy
We did see several older women sunbathing topless, but only in the beach areas which are further away from the more crowded pool areas.
mcatsam
We saw two women topless at the adult pool and then again on isle mujeres which is a small island across from the hotel
Altv695
I don't know if it is "permitted" or not; I do know there were a half dozen ladies bathing that way both by the pool and on the beach and nobody cared; the staff brought them drinks and did not say anything.
Family2039
Yes, outside some of the resorts, especially by the RIU, topless sunbathing was acceptable. You just have to call the resort you may be interested in before booking and ask if it is allowed on their beaches.
CStroh01
Topless is permitted here. Pools and beach !!

delray
For any special dietary needs, we do suggest contacting the resort directly as they will be best to assist you. The email address found directly on their website is palace.peninsula@riu.com.
MariaCC
I highly doubt it. The staff had difficulty understanding English for anything other than standard menu questions. We heard another family trying to explain a shell fish allergy and they seemed to have trouble understanding. There was a great variety of fresh vegetables and fruits though, so you should have plenty of options.
ncrush
I rather doubt it. The food was good and the speciality restaurants were very good but it is mass produced--not cooked to order. The had a few "stations" like stir fry stations where you tell them what you want. My son-in-law has bean allergy and was careful but still had one meal where something got him and we are pretty sure it was cross contamination.
Family2039
I would say yes. At breakfast, they event had a Gluten free option.

Is there a jetted jacuzzi in every room?6 answers
The junior suite has a photo of a Jacuzzi but the descriptions are the same about a hydro massage tub for each room type. I only want to upgrade rooms if one offers a jaccuzzi in the room.
6 years, 82 months ago
Alissa
The Jacuzzi's you see in the photos are the hydro massage tubs. The premise for both are the same, but Jacuzzi is the popular brand name.
LaurenCC
The Junior suites have a hydro tub in the middle of the room between the bed and the bathroom. Its fine for one person but not really big enough for 2 adults. It not a bathtub in the shower , thats what i thought by the description
penguin4ever82
We were located on the 15th floor in the center of the hotel facing the ocean. Though there is a smaller one person jacuzzi in the room (jets and all) it appeared the corner rooms with larger balconies were the only rooms that had larger outdoor hot tubs.
mcatsam
Pretty sure the tubs in all the rooms are the same. They are all jetted tubs. The villas have a big spa pool on the balcony and from our room I could also see some rooms in the main hotel that had spas on their balconies. Those rooms didn't appear to be on offer through this site, but it could also be they were just booked out when we booked.
I upgraded rooms and I would do the same again if for nothing else but the view from the top floors! I wouldn't upgrade to a villa as they had almost no view at all, but I would consider getting one of those other rooms I saw at the far end of the main hotel. They went up as high as about 14 floors and the view from the spa would have been the best in the whole place.
nzlockie
All rooms have jacuzzi...but the villas have an outdoor one. The hotel is fabulous I would strongly recommend you go. I just came back and when I go back to Cancun this is where I will always stay. I am 22 years old so I can relate to you.

Many resorts require you to wait until checking in to make your reservations but you can contact the resort for more information. Their email address is: palace.peninsula@riu.com. Thank you!
LizCC
No and good luck making one once you get there. They have one person making reservations for 400 rooms.

We recently went at the end of July and they were no longer doing reservations. It was open dining from 6:30-9:30 and you just have to show up. There may be a little bit of a wait but they hand out the restaurant buzzer things to notify your when your table is ready. I'm not sure if they were only doing this due to peak time and lots of guests but it was pretty cool to not have to be down at the lobby at 8am to make a reservation several days in advance.

what brands of liqour are provided? how old do the rooms seem, how close to senor frogs or other clubs, is this mainly for older 35+ or 21+3 answers

This resort is located 13 miles from Cancun International Airport (CUN) and just minutes from downtown Cancun. Unfortunately, we do not receive information as far as the ages of guests staying at a particular resort. In regards to the brands of liquor resorts offer, as amenities such as this are subject to change, we do suggest contacting the resort directly as they would be best to assist with this inquiry. The email address for the resort to contact them directly is palace.peninsula@riu.com.
MariaCC
The age groups included 21+ as well as people into their 50's. The mix seemed half and half (under 40 and over 40).
The liqueor is name brands (Smirnoff, Jose Cuervo). For beer, they had Dos XX (no Corona).
Senor Frogs was approximately 7 minutes away by bus. Buses run very frequently and cost $1 (if paying in US currency) each way.
LongIslanders
Great liquor choices: Jose Cuervo, Don Julio, Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, Canadian Club, Bacardi, Captain Morgan, Southern Comfort, Early Times, Absolut, Smirnoff, Kaluha, Baileys, Gordons, Ballantine, and others. Rooms are very updated and extremely clean -- in fact the entire hotel is extremely clean. Wouldn't likely walk to Sr. Frogs and the other nightclubs, but could. However, buses run very regularly and only cost $1 US each way, just outside hotel. Other Riu properties near Sr. Frogs is Riu Palace Las Americas and Riu Cancun (just finished remodel a few days ago -- beginning of August).

However, the resort's website does not include any information regarding babysitting services. For further information regarding this added amenity, we do suggest contacting the resort directly as they would be best to assist with this inquiry. What is the difficulty of transporation into downtown via bus/taxi?
Which might be best?

As far as payment...which is best US currency or MX peso?
5 years, 69 months ago

Riu Palace Peninsula is located just minutes from downtown Cancun. For information on local public transportation, we do suggest contacting the resort directly as they would be best to assist. The email address to the resort's website to contact them directly is palace.peninsula@riu.com.
MariaCC
We used only the bus line. It was sometimes crowded and we had to stand, but for only ten pesos (one dollar) we could go just about anywhere. The busses come by in front of the hotel every few minutes and most of the drivers speak English, at least enough that you can tell them where you want to get off and they'll stop there. We didn't use the taxi service. We paid in either pesos or dollars and never had a problem.
Copperhead43
The bus is the way to go, its $1 US dollar a day for a pass, taxi's are more expensive.
CityofChamps
transportation is best by bus. The bus you can get on for a dollar a person and it is fast. Taxis are expensive. We were there in July 2014 and a taxi is about $60-$80 from hotel to XelHa. $30 up and down the strip there.
From the airport, schedule a group pick up with your travel company. We paid $20 a person and it was for round trip from and to the hotel. Taxi I heard was no less than $30 each way.
Keep 1 dollar bills if you want to tip. DONT take large bills. If you plan to do any shopping - change to peso before you get to the hotel. The shops do not exchange at the current rate. When we went, it was suppose to be $13.10 to $1 and the shops were changing it for 10.00 to $1. Rip off.
MindaAnn
If you're in the hotel zone, you'll likely want to go to the shopping/nightclub area in the hotel zone area -- this is not the same as downtown Cancun, which is mostly residential and not where many people venture. The easiest and cheapest way to get to the shopping/nightclub area is by public bus. It only costs $1 US each way and stops just outside the hotel. Buses come regularly all day and night. If you wanted to take a taxi, it might be $5 or $10 US -- not sure, but since they don't use meters you can likely negotiate before you drive. I found that just using US currency works best. Exchange rates at most places are between 11 -13 pesos per dollar. Bear in mind that hotels don't exchange US currency, but they do have ATMs. You can use a credit card for larger purchases, like excursions, but I'd avoid that in small establishments. Bring singles for tips.
Foodsavant
easy to get to downtown with the bus. cost about 10 peso or just under $1. dollar.

We saw them in each one we went to. We visited 4 of them. Even saw them at most of the bars.

It is our experience that the kids can go to some of the restaurants. The steak restaurant and the Italian one. Not sure about the others. Please note that if you are traveling with children that the buffet is different every night and they have an extensive amount of choices. We found that the families went more to the buffets as did we. You really cannot beat it. Some nights they even have lobster on the buffet. They always have steak, chicken, Mexican, pasta, etc.

3 years, 46 months ago
Michigan
You may use USD, there is a foreign exchange in some resorts, but there should be a kiosk within the airport. You may book excursions with us before travel or directly with the excursion company when you arrive. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
TimCC
Michigan,
Tipping in USD is quite acceptable. Bring some singles with you as the hotel does not make change in USD...sometimes the bartenders can.
Booking excursions can be done with the CheapCaribbean reps (AmStar) that are located in the hotel every morning. They do take credit cards. Try the Isla Mujeres excursion with Cancun Adventures and see if you can get Roberto for a guide! Depending on weather, you will get to snorkel, paddleboard and visit the island for a few hours. If you do get to the island, rent a golf cart and drive around for a bit! It's a blast! Note that we needed to have our licenses to do that!
As for bringing Pesos, you can get buy with USD and a credit card if you stay on the resort. If you venture into Cancun you may need pesos, but most places take both. Just be aware of the current exchange rate to make sure its a fair trade!
Seahawks
Yes, Mexico accepts dollars such as when using the public transportation as well. The only thing is that you spend more - bus fare is 18 pesos; exchange is currently $1 to 18n pesos. The you pay the bus in dollars; you pay $1.
