Clean, friendly and good for the whole family with a great beach
We visited mid November with a large family group. We were all pleased with the cleanliness of the hotel and the beach location. overall we had a positive experience with the staff and the shows kept the kids entertained every night. The buffets were great and had plenty of variety, the a la carte restaurants lacked unfortunately, the steaks were the same as the buffet at the steak house and the Italian lacked with its menu, but at least the staff was good!. Drinks were pretty good but at this price point of hotel you're not getting top shelf drinks, the bartenders do a great job at mixing drinks and are super friendly. Lots of pools to choose from and a water park for little kids. Overall the Riu Dunamar is an excellent family hotel with plenty of entertainment and if you are able to get a good deal I don't see how you'll be disappointed, the location and beach are a standout.

Thanksgiving at RIU Dunamar
We just returned from a 5 night stay at the RIU Dunamar over the Thanksgiving holiday. We were a family of 7 ages 9 years old to 70. We had the time of our life! First and foremost, the beach was amazing. The 9 year old could not get enough of the boogie boards with the nice rolling waves. The pools were amazing as well. You didn't even have to leave the pool to get a drink as they would come around with a cart to serve you. The grounds were beautiful. They were setting up for Christmas during our last days there and I bet it will look spectacular once everything is set up. Everyone enjoyed the food and the drinks. We ate at every specialty restaurant. I liked that we did not have to setup a reservation for dinner. If there was a wait, they would give you a beeper like restaurants do to know your table was ready. The 9-year-old loved the activities at the kid's club. The 20-year-olds enjoyed the water slides. The older adults enjoyed the afternoon bingo games. Everyone enjoyed the nightly entertainment. Our room was nice and clean every day. The RIU app made it very easy if you needed anything extra. One time we needed our mini bar refilled and you just submit a request on the app. Another time we had some extra sand from the beach and we needed a broom and I submitted a request on the app and they were there in minutes to clean it up. We did not request any special room, and we could still see the ocean from our balcony. Before leaving for the trip I was worried that the resort would be really packed since it was sold out over the holiday. It did not seem busy at all. There were enough chairs every day to be had. Would highly recommend the RIU Dunamar for a family vacation destination.

A 4-star resort
Definitely not a 5-star resort, however we appreciated the location, rooms and cleanliness (in the room and balcony, not in the shower). Restaurants (a-la-carte) options are very limited, with the buffet being the "most popular" The beach chairs should be more spaced-out, as beach goers, sitting on the chairs, looked like sardines in a can. Security personnel shall be present on-site, especially around the bar-pool, where we saw few instances of inappropriate behaviour The room-cleaning personnel shall ensure the showers are de-clogged on a regular basis and also the mold on the grout between tiles should be removed (a checklist perhaps would help) Do not ask for a wine-list as it is inexistent; customers do not have option to purchase wine, as the "house" wine was not great. Overall, in our opinion, a 4-star hotel

RIU 🤩Experience
A family friendly hotel. If you want adults only there’s nearby RIU hotels too. The staff are very professional polite and friendly which makes you holiday experience more enjoyable. The hotel itself is superb, the layout and facilities are excellent. The beach is practically at the hotel. You literally walk through RIU’s pools location into the beach. Everything my family and I experienced was 🤩wow. We will definitely be coming back here!!

Very Solid Resort
I went with my family on the week of November 15-22, 2025. Rooms - Overall, they were very basic but very clean and cleanliness is obviously the most important thing. I liked the showers, they were much nicer than the showers I have experienced in Mexico. The bottom sheet on the bed is not fitted which isn't surprising. Our room was kind of close to the stage and you could definitely hear the music at night when trying to sleep, especially during the Wednesday party. Food - The food was average. The buffet had a good selection but it was the same everyday for dinner and lunch. Two of the restaurants are mini buffets (Italian and Asian). The Italian you can order a main as the only menu item, the Asian restaurant is full buffet. The poolside fries were pretty good, the fries always seem to be good in Mexico. Pools - The pools were pretty nice but very packed. The Dunamar is definitely a family resort and I would assume that there are quite a few people packed into the rooms. The resort always felt very busy, especially the pools in the afternoon. I didn't spend a lot of time at the pools, only the kids pool and the beach. The kids pool is great, my daughter had a blast. The adult slides were pretty cool as well, make sure to try those out. Beach - The beach is the best part of this resort, hence why resorts in this area are generally more expensive than resorts on the way to Tulum. The water is beautiful, the sand is very fine but there isn't a lot of shade. The palm trees on the beach are quite young and do not provide a lot of shade. You won't have an issue finding a chair, but that isn't to say that the beach is not absolutely packed. The beach is definitely nicer in the afternoon to early evening. The waves can be quite big so don't wear your sunglasses into the water or you might lose them, I lost mine. Service - I thought the service was great. The guys on the beach, like Johnny, work their butts off and it is really easy to get a drink without leaving your seat. The people cleaning the rooms also did a great job. The service was consistently very good. Entertainment - I was in bed so I wasn't able to see any of the nightly entertainment but I think it was pretty standard fare. There was a night where they had the Mexican Michael Jackson performance and a night of Mexican culture featuring singing and dancing. Before the shows at 9PM, there were sometimes some kids activities. Overall - I would come back to this hotel but I would try to get into the Palace first. The Dunamar is one of the cheaper places in this area and the capacity reflects this, it was very full. It is a very solid resort, it doesn't do anything bad but it doesn't really do anything amazingly well. I have been to Mexico many times and this report is definitely on the top end of the middle of the pack resorts in Mexico.
