November trip

First of all let me start with the resort is beautiful the grounds and the beach are lovely the pools were also very nice. As far as the rooms go they were nice my only complaint was that the beds were awful when i say awful i mean as hard as a rock it was like sleeping on plywood no lie. we went with two other couples and they said the same thing. they are supposed to give you water and refill your fridge in room every other day. We arrived on a Sunday and and by Tuesday they still have not come and filled the fridge. and don't tip the fridge boy we did and he never came back to stock it.. the food well it was ok nothing special we found out that if they ran out of something which they always did it would take them forever to fill it back up and that was in every restaurant. we went to the steak restaurant and the waiter took our order and we waited over an hour and a half for our food and then it came out all wrong and cold and we ended up going to the buffet. the liqueur was horrible the only thing they had that was top shelf was Smirnoff vodka and that is it.. and you were lucky to find it but we did have the dispenser in our room (thank God).. and try and have that filled forget it.. the service that was another thing whenever you asked someone to a question or to do something for you they would look at you as if you were joking. they were not very nice at all.. we went to the Riu in Ocho Rios because we thought that the Riu is supposed to be a very nice place. the recreation staff was fantastic we loved Birdman he rocked.. he made the week fun that is for sure. just be prepared for a lovely place but food drinks not up to Parr at all. bring a Yetti for your drinks so they stay cold. we were very disappointment and won't go to another Riu again for a long time. Dunn's River falls was nice we booked it with the rep from cheap Caribbean and made it for 6 for a wed and then wed night we received a letter stating that they had to change it to Thursday at a later time and for more money.. so be aware of this and make sure you get what you want. it worked out in the long run but was a long day on Thursday.. I guess you get what you pay for.. not my top choice and don't stay on the luxury side only difference is you get champagne and two other restaurants. not worth the money in my opinion.. this was just an honest review and take it for what it is worth..

Unhappy beach lover

Cheap Caribbean came through for problems there. Was very disappointed in this resort. We had been there 3 years ago and it was great so we were expecting great again. No. What our big issues were we felt very unwelcome (maybe because we're Americans?). Employees were not very friendly, acted like serving us a drink was a chore, and we are tippers!! Food was good not great but we knew that already. Beach is very beautiful but you can't walk on it at night because you will be mobbed by locals trying to sell you drugs. It was not like that last time we were there.Resort was full of locals that were smoking pot in the family pool and it didn't seem to surprise the employees at all. Not alot of English spoken by the employees, seemed they went out of their way to speak their language around us ,which makes it feel like they are talking about you! This resort has gone down hill in 3 years and I would not recommend. This was our 3rd trip to Jamaica and this trip made it so I will probably never go back.

Longer the stay, Better the experience

Resort was great. Specialty restaurants were average. Shows were exceptional. No top shelf liquor on the blue side. Excursions at the hotel pool were better than the travel agent packages. The multi-stop bus to and from airport was 2.5 hours where a cab is 45 minutes. So stay long enough to make the trip worth while. Check your flight times. We had a 6 hr layover in Miami. My brother booked a 2hr layover.

Had better experiences

The grounds, pools and beach we’re beautiful. Needed to call and remind for restocking of refrigerator and bar. Bed was very hard. Your personal housekeeper kept the room very clean and was very accommodating. If you dared to ask a random housekeeping staff member a question or a favor watch out. Got met with rolling eyes or dirty looks. Not very friendly. Bartenders had great disposition. One pool bar ran out of the good vodka twice in one week. Why could they not call for replenishments? Entertainment staff was great yet entertainment was not all that great.I longed for American ham and American hotdogs. The Jamaican hotdogs and meet we’re just not what I was used to.

What's to Love

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

There's Red Stripe Beer in the fridge. Every. Day.

The stress-ousting massages and treatments at the Renova Spa. Swoon.

The Jerk Chicken Hut on the beach. You'll be jammin' here ofter. Probably daily.

The phrase you hear everywhere, "No problem, Mon." Go ahead and start practicing.

The epic snorkeling that's right on the beach. Brightly colored fish will make your underwater pics dazzle.

Dunn's River Falls and swimming with the dolphins - close by and always touristy fun.

What We'd Change

The drive to the resort will take about an hour, but once you step foot onto the resort grounds, you'll be in love.

Why You Should Go

It's so worth it to upgrade to the Deluxe Wing - concierge service 24/7.

You can get a free introductory to scuba lesson in the pool. Dive in!

There are water sports out the wazoo - windsurfing, kayaking and snorkeling.

On land, you can play tennis, volleyball and take an aerobics class.

The entertainment team blows it out, starting with the nightly reggae, steel drums & chill beats.

The botanical gardens of Canbrook aren't your average "flower forest." It's uber lush.
