We loved it!

We visited Riu Ocho Rios in January 2020 as a group of 8 (4 couples). We have traveled together on cruises and to Punta Cana in the past. This was, by far, our favorite trip. We are already planning a return for next year. The trip to the resort will take just under 2 hours by bus. We booked our transportation when we booked our flight and resort. There was one stop at a rest stop and 4-5 stops at other resorts, dropping off other vacationers. The driver was very entertaining and made the trip feel less daunting. Our resort was the last stop, but totally worth the wait. Check in was easy and we were all able to get rooms close to each other. We all booked ocean front rooms. In order to be close to our friends, our room was upgraded to a family suit, which I would call ocean view rather than ocean front, although the view was still great, no complaints there. Our room had two king-sized beds that are rather firm, but we didn't have a problem with that. The pillows were fine but the bedding was only a sheet and a "blanket" that was no thicker than another sheet. Since it was just the two of us, I just pulled the other "blanket" from the extra bed and was more comfortable. The toilet is separate from the rest of the bathroom, as a true water closet, which is nice. The bathroom area doesn't have a door though, which means that when you're showering, there is no privacy, other than the fact that the shower is tucked around the corner, but shower door is glass. Also, when the main door to the room is open, you can see directly into the shower from the mirrors of the bathroom. For a family, I wouldn't have been happy about this, but since it was just my husband and I, no problem. Water pressure was great, double sinks were great, hair dryer worked, towels were nice. The beverage in the rooms comes every other day, refilling the fridge with coke, diet coke, orange soda, red stripe and 3 large water bottles. We reused these water bottles by refilling them in the buffet when empty (there is a sign in the bathroom that you should not drink the tap water, but I did, on occasion with no problems). There is a coffee maker in the room, but we never used it. There is also an alcohol dispenser in the room, which we used once with no issues. The doors of our friends room required an extra pull to fully shut, but ours shut on its own without a tug. The beach is fantastic! The water is calm and turquoise and there isn't a lot of wind (like in Punta Cana). We put our towels on chairs around 8 every morning and never had an issue finding 8 available chairs right on the beach. There are palm trees throughout the beach so that you can find shade when you want it. The swimming area is roped off so that boats do not interfere with swimming. Lots of people snorkeling right along the rope line of the swimming area. There was a boy on the beach with us that was stung by a jellyfish, so that is something to watch out for. It looked like a plastic bag along the shore. We checked out pedal boats and kayaks with no problem (first come first served). The pools were nice but we didn't spend much time there. The swim up bars/pool has a lot of wasps, but they weren't too much of a problem. The entertainment was good, when we saw it. The steel drums were really fun! The beach clears out around dusk. At night, the beach is still open, but there are men lurking in the shadows to sell Mary Jane. They generally left us alone after first checking in with us. They did not go beyond the beach and weren't aggressive unless they felt some interest. While this is all-inclusive, we learned on previous trips, that tipping goes a long way. We brought 100 $1 just for tipping. We tipped everyone, including the beverage service, room service, buffet servers, etc. We never had any bad service, probably as a result of or tipping, but who knows? The ladies at the sports bar make a great Bloody Mary, so check that out! They do not have servers on the beach, but from past experience, it's just better/quicker to get it yourself anyway. There are plenty of bars around where you don't have to walk very far to get a refill. The restaurants were great! We didn't know this, but Saturday is lobster night at the buffet, and we heard it was phenomenal! We did the steak house, Asian (twice), Italian and the jerk hut. We loved the Asian the first time and it wasn't as good the second night. I think it's because we got in right at 6:30 the first time and went a bit later the second time. We loved not having to make reservations. Just hopping in line by 6:15 was a guarantee to be seated (as an 8-person table!) right at opening. The Asian is a buffet, Italian is buffet-style apps and served main course, steakhouse is all server-based. All of the restaurants had wine and would get you any other drinks you requested. The omelet bar is definitely worth the short wait in the mornings at the buffet. The jerk hut was good, and you can get it with no sauce if spicy isn't your thing. The buffet was great for all meals. There was always a full section of vegetarian options like salad bar, pasta salads, fruit, etc, if that is important to you. The cold items at the buffet are in a cooler with a sneeze guard, for food safety, and hot items were under warmers. We did an excursion, which we booked right at the resort. We took a catamaran to Dunn's River Falls and loved it! It starts with a snorkeling stop on the way, which was just ok, nothing too exciting. The coral wasn't very bright but we did see some fish and a sting ray. We then went to the falls. Definitely get water shoes (despite what they told us, they're the same price at the gift shop as the little excursion store). You can just take the stairs and remain dry, if you just want to observe, but climbing the falls is definitely a fun experience. I'd say older kids can do it, but probably not younger than 10ish. You do hold hands at the start, but then climb as a group without holding hands once you're confident. There are lots of places to take pictures. I wished I had one of those clear necklace pouches for my phone. I had a waterproof fanny pack, but didn't like having to take my phone out to take a picture. The boat ride back to the resort was basically a dance party, with loud music and drinks. They make sure you have a great time on the boat! If you would like to partake in the local marijuana, you will have no trouble finding it, even at the airport. Tipping is expected everywhere and some will even ask you to "show your appreciation." You also have the opportunity to bargain with anyone selling anything (even the excursions), but the expectation is I help you, you help me, i.e. give me a tip. The clientele at this resort includes some families with children, couples, retirees, etc, but everyone we met was fun and loving their stay. The vacationers were mostly from Canada, some Brits and the rest mostly from colder states in the US. Everyone spoke English, so that was never an issue and everyone was happy to be there. The resort was always clean and well maintained too. All in all, this place was fantastic! We loved every minute of it and we're looking forward to returning.

Great Hotel, Poor Booking Service(Cheap Caribbean)

The Good: The hotel was great, especially for the price. Pools and beach were great, however, some of the bartenders can come off unfriendly at times. Outdoor water sports were great, highly recommend doing the catamaran cruise. Restaurants were good overall, but get there early or you might not be seated. They may say “we are full” even if there is plenty of room, as the restaurants aren’t staffed enough to cover all the tables. The Bad: Check in was awful. Still not sure if it was Cheap Caribbean’s fault or Riu, but we spent 2 hours getting into a room after we were told that our original reservation had been “canceled”. After several phone calls back and forth to Cheap Caribbean and Riu (neither entity would own up to who was at fault) we were able to be “upgraded”. Since this was the second issue we ran into through Cheap Caribbean, we are thinking it is on them. Not happy about their responsiveness or professionalism in helping to resolve this issue. Overall, we had a great time!

Amazing

We have traveled to multiple Riu locations. This one by far had the most activities to do. I had visited this hotel in 2015 and since then it has been renovated. It is beautiful. The staff keeps the hotel immaculately clean!! Everyone was so friendly and asking if we needed anything. During the day, they have group volleyball, pool group exercise, and activities for kids. Once a week they do a foam pool party (so much fun!). At night there are multiple activities going on main stage has entertainment, also dj at the beach, neon beach party, another dj from 11-12a. My only complaint would be no Mimosas at breakfast (we tried multiple different places). The dinning options are not as great as the other Riu's we have been to but the day activities and nightlife make this hotel much better!! The buffet would allow you to take food to your room, a pot of coffee to your room, or dessert. Everyone was very accommodating which made for an amazing vacation!

The stress-ousting massages and treatments at the Renova Spa. Swoon.

The Jerk Chicken Hut on the beach. You'll be jammin' here ofter. Probably daily.

Unlimited access to Splash Water World.

The epic snorkeling that's right on the beach. Brightly colored fish will make your underwater pics dazzle.

Dunn's River Falls and swimming with the dolphins - close by and always touristy fun.

What We'd Change

The drive to the resort will take about an hour, but once you step foot onto the resort grounds, you'll be in love.

Why You Should Go

You can get a free introductory to scuba lesson in the pool. Dive in!

There are water sports out the wazoo - windsurfing, kayaking and snorkeling.

On land, you can play volleyball or take an aerobics class.

The entertainment team blows it out, starting with the nightly reggae, steel drums & chill beats.

The botanical gardens of Canbrook aren't your average "flower forest." It's uber lush.
