Disappointed

My husband, kids, and I have been to several all-inclusive resorts throughout the DR and Mexico over the past 15 years so we have lots of comparisons. We were very excited about going to Breathless in Punta Cana from December 28-January 4, 2018 based on the great reviews. Here is what we liked and what we feel needs improvement: LIKES: -Room Service: Room service was fast and top notch; food was great. We ordered coffee for two around 7:00AM every morning and it came in a flash. -Beach: The beach is really nice with very little seaweed and the beach bar service was outstanding in comparison to other resorts. We were happy with our drinks and drink service throughout the resort. Plenty of chairs on the beach for everyone, but you still need to reserve them early in the morning to get the spot you want. -Towel Service: Exceptional. -Restaurants: The French restaurant was our favorite, but they were all pretty good, except the Mexican restaurant, which we left and went to the main buffet as our backup. I didn't say anything to my family, but I found hair in my food three times at the main buffet (twice from the spaghetti station--I think it's in the pot of water where they reheat the noodles). I was extremely grossed out and was paranoid to enjoy my food without picking through it after that. Thought it was best not to gross out my whole family. Did find that restaurants would be closed for private events, but when you look in the windows, it was dark and no activity whatsoever. -Restaurant Service: Very good the majority of the time. -Entertainment: We enjoyed the entertainment in the main lobby areas a lot. It was a great evening gathering place with great music, drink stations and live entertainment. Servers were excellent. We didn't go to the casino. -Xhale Club: Recommend upgrading to the Xhale Club, but do it before you get there. We upgraded when we got there and the process took FOREVER. Not sure why it was such a hassle. The Xhale buffet at the Strip restaurant was good and the restaurant location was close to the beach and open air, which we enjoyed. Xhale club offered nice top shelf beverage options, but there is only one Xhale bar location and not centrally located or convenient. WHAT NEEDS TO BE IMPROVED: -Check-In Process: We did not enjoy the special check-in process for Cheap Carribean/Apple Vacation customers. We were told to wait for a shuttle to take us to a special location where we sat for nearly two hours to upgrade to the Xhale club and claim our two rooms. Not sure why the process was so painfully slow. Streamlining is definitely needed. -Rooms: Our kids traveled with us so we had two rooms, which were both disappointing: cabinets were shabby and falling apart; door fell off one of them. The bathroom fan did not work in one room, phone didn't work in one room, missing one chair on balcony, both rooms very damp. We were part of the Xhale club, but we could not get anything fixed, but we did finally get a balcony chair after two days (shake my head). My husband and I get up early in the morning so we enjoy ordering room service coffee for two and having coffee over looking the grounds, so the second chair was important to us. When we asked for help, it was promised with no follow through. Overall, I would say that the rooms were equivalent to a 3 star Days Inn. -Resort Bathrooms: The resort bathrooms were dirty and often out of toilet paper. They were run down just like the guest rooms. My husband and son did not like the men's bathrooms because there was no privacy between urinals. -Resort Furniture/Decor: Looks good n pictures, but get an in-person look and it needs a major upgrade. We felt that the resort felt very old. Owners need to incorporate materials and finishes that can better withstand the volume of people who stay there every year. OVERALL: We would not recommend this resort. Feel it's overrated for the cost and undeserving of high ratings.

Second time still not the charm

We stayed here 4 years ago right after it had opened. The style of the resort originally caught our attention. The resort has a great vibe to it. It has a modern feel with a tilt towards the culture of the Island. There is a new sister resort next door which allows you to check out some really cool pool areas and pool bars. HOWEVER, this is family resort. Most of the original problems are still pervasive in the facility today dealing with Language, Food and Service. There is some communication challenges amongst a majority of servers. (YES, we were visiting another country and should master their language much better then we currently can.) Hearing from the Resort that 90% of the guests are American, I find it hard to understand why, (knowing their demographic) they wouldn’t make sure comprehension wouldn’t take away from the guest experience. Breathless is owned by a huge Resort Holding Company so this seems like a no brainer. The food quality is worthy of a 3 star resort, not even close to 5 stars. They simply don’t have anyone who knows what a traditional Italian or French dish should taste like. All were way off the mark. Plate/meal presentation was good. Hibachi was OK, no real talent by the chef. While dinnning at the Hibacci, my wife asked for a couple of spring rolls. A few minutes later, we recieved 2 SPRITES. We both looked at each other and then looked to people around us. They shook their heads and said yup, you ordered 2 Spring Rolls. Breakfast in the Spoon Buffet was solid. Great variety of meat, cheeses, breads, custom omelettes, fruits abound. Conversing with people who visit other all inclusives, agreed with a very low food standard being the norm here. That was an ongoing concern with everyone. Exhale Club can be worth it regarding acquiring a room closer to the beach, check-in and out, more private lounges, higher quality of branded alcohol. We definitely will continue to travel to the Dominican Republic as we love the people, beaches and culture. It just won’t be at this particular facility.

1st day and half was horrible.

When we arrived at the resort (4:00PM), we were greeted outside and was taken by a golf cart to the back side of the resort for a "Special Check-in". We were taken to an area that had a couple of desks and a couch. We waiting approx 15 minutes while the girl was checking in another couple. After check in we were escorted to our room by a nice young man who had been with us since our arrival. He insisted on a later meeting time so he could show us around. I immediately declined as the whole thing felt like a prelude to a sales pitch of some kind. He insisted so we finally agreed to 6:00pm meeting time. He was waiting for us near the restaurants and gave a much longer than needed tour of the restaurants, We decided on the buffet and he escorted us into the restaurant talking the whole time. He was again waiting or us outside the restaurant and wanted to set up a breakfast meeting time to give us gifts. I told that was not necessary and we didn't want to set up a time but again it was apparent he wasn't going to leave us alone until we agreed. In the morning we actually saw him and snuck by him and had our breakfast alone. When we left breakfast he saw us come out and sort of scolded us for having breakfast without him. He then introduced us to his manager and told the manager we didn't have the breakfast meeting. To get the gifts promised, we were finally brought into a sales room where we had to take a tour of the resort and listen to the 1 1/2 hour sales pitch. I told them I didn't want to buy anything but they insisted we had to have the tour in order to get a $50 resort credit gift. This whole courting process was to sell us a $20,000 vacation club membership. We wasted most of the first day and the second morning on this nonsense. The resort was great, but will never go to one of these places again due to all the hassle and tough sell tactic.

Beautiful Beaches and great pool staff.

Just returned from 6 nights at Breathless with a group of 7 couples. First, have to say that we spent most of our time at the pool and the wait staff were excellent. They are around every 5 minutes. We've been to all inclusive resorts where we had to go to the bar all day long as there was no one to take drink orders around the pool. Breathless got this one right!! The resort was very nice, very clean and grounds very well kept. DR is known for beautiful sand and beaches and we were not disappointed. Ocean water was warm and we had a blast in playing in the waves but you have to be careful...strong undertow. We hung out at the "large" pool most of the time because the "party pool" music was way too loud to even talk to each other but we were glad to have the choice of pools. And the large pool is very nice!! Rooms were clean and beds pretty comfy for a hotel. Rooms never really get as cool as I would've liked at night because of the humidity so I didn't sleep great any of our nights for that reason. Otherwise rooms and room service are pretty good. Food: average at best. But I didn't come to DR thinking it was going to be fine dining. The best food the entire trip was the lunch buffet at the large pool (the indoor one, can't recall name). Japanese Hibachi was below average, French was decent and Italian was pretty good. Overall, we had a great time with our group and I would return to this resort for the pool and beach alone. If you are looking for party atmosphere it can be found here but resort is big enough that you can also escape from it as well if you want to.

What's to Love

A Las-Vegas-meets-South-Beach mash-up, Breathless Punta Cana is an adults-only playground for elite, discerning travelers.

Here, you can either frolic or lounge, (or toggle between the two states), in an escape zone of unhinged revelry and bliss.

Rockin' suites (the size of the Grand Canyon) with stress-busting Jacuzzis on your private terrace.

Baths have Jack and Jill vessel sinks in hip, bright colors (orange, yellow), which will bring a little happy to your sleepy-eyed morning.

You can pamper yourself with Zero % Gilchrist & Soames luxury bath products.

A transcendent, lush spa offers a bevy of tantalizing, worry-smashing, soul-transporting treatments. (Defies description, actually.)

The Bachelorette Party Package - the last fling before the ring. Boom.

Shimmering, sparkling beaches with glistening sand have perch-worthy cabanas.

There's an expansive main pool, swim-up bar, a multi-level Freestyle pool and four other pools all waiting for you.

What We'd Change

The drive from the airport might seem like it's far, but once you arrive, you're going to be swept away. And, be prepared to receive a cocktail upon arriving because the staff at Breathless knows you're ready to party!

Why You Should Go

The pheromone-raising monthly fetes like Menage a Deux a Trois and weekly bashes like Dirty Dancing Night.

Water sports galore: Kayaking, windsurfing, catamaran, paddle boating, and more.

Pool aerobics for those who want to burn calories to keep that beach bod.

There's a coral reef 1.5 miles from the main land - dreamy perfect for snorkeling or scuba.

Check out the nearby historic sites - 16th century Mediterranean village on a dramatic cliff, or the south-east tip of the island for turquoise water.

The dolphins are near for a fun day trip. But you might be too busy making history of your own.

A casino that is the very definition of world-class. You have to see to understand.
