Long Awaited Family Vacation
I recently spent 7 days at the Grand Bavaro Princess property in Punta Cana with 22 other family members ranging in age from 8 months to 75 years old. Five of us had rooms in Platinum villas and the rest of our group, with children, had rooms on the family side of the resort. Please find following my comments and observations (and those of our group) that should be heeded by resort management as well as future guests. PRO'S *Property grounds are well maintained *Fairly large range of dining options - something to suit everyone from sit-down restaurants to food trucks at the beach *Spa facilities and personnel were wonderful. Seven of us had massages and each were quite happy with treatment *Beds at beach were plentiful and comfortable offering both sun and shade *Although seaweed has become an issue for most ocean front properties, a good job of constantly dredging the sand in an attempt to control, was appreciated *Signage around the resort is plentiful and easy to read CON'S *Check-in personnel for Platinum were not friendly and provided no indication that they were happy to help or to welcome us to the resort *One member of our group was unhappy with the room accommodations given and when going back to the arrival area was advised in order to move her room, the other room with 2 guests, next door to her, would have to relocate as well. These rooms happened to be adjoining rooms (that were NOT requested) and made no sense *Telephones in rooms primarily never worked and if they by chance did - no one ever answered any call *If steps are an issue, and are staying in a Platinum villa, you MUST request first floor accommodations as there are absolutely NO HANDRAILS (anywhere on property). With approximately 12 steps up and down to/from the room this presents a very dangerous possibility of a fall. There are also steps in the room leading from bedroom area to rest of room that are easy to fall down, especially at night in order to get to bathroom. *Safes in 2 of our villa rooms were either never working or only working sporadically, resulting in tracking down Security to come fix in order to lock or unlock *Free Internet is terrible and occasional at best *One of our rooms with 2 guests in a Platinum villa only had 1 bath towel, 1 hand towel and no bathrobes. After requesting numerous times with housekeeping staff, towels were finally increased but never received bathrobes *Trolleys around the resort are not frequent enough during peak hours. Many times would have to wait for the next 2-3 trolleys to arrive in order to secure a seat *Don’t even know how to begin the photo studio debacle. Prior to arrival we inquired with the resort regarding available photographers in area. We were advised “We have our own studio onsite that you would have to use. We don’t permit others to gain access to property”. We reserved time for this shoot and put down a deposit. Pictures of our group were taken on Tuesday morning and we were advised that the allotted number of package pictures we were purchasing would be processed, enhanced, etc., and be ready for pickup on Wednesday. For unknown reasons the photo studio closed and remained closed and non responsive through Friday. Only after threatening to bring legal action (through numerous voicemail and email messages) were we able to obtain resolution - just hours before departure for home on Saturday. Resort personnel that we elevated this problem to, onsite, offered no help whatsoever. From previously stating that the studio was their “own”, to disavowing ownership and anything to do with them, once again Princess Resorts fell short.

If you’re looking for a 5-star hotel, Bavaro Princess is definitely not it.
When we arrived at the hotel, they tried to assign us a room very far from the beach, since the resort is huge. I asked if there was any possibility to place our family closer, and the receptionist told us that officially it would cost $400—but if we gave him a $200 bribe, he could make it happen. The room we ended up in was okay, but I wouldn’t call it 5-star. There were only three large towels in the entire room. The fridge doesn’t actually cool—it’s just a chiller. It takes about 24 hours to cool a single bottle of water. I requested a crib for my 15-month-old baby. The crib was in terrible condition—screws were falling out and it was wobbly. It was simply unsafe. The buffet food was, to put it mildly, not tasty. Especially at dinner—the line for steak, for example, could be 10–15 minutes long. But if you speak Spanish and ask, the chef will gladly serve you ahead of everyone else. I’ve never seen such favoritism in my life. Not only were the steaks like shoe leather, but in line you might not even get served at all if you don’t speak Spanish. The Wi-Fi was awful. If you want something better, you have to pay $20 for premium Wi-Fi—which still doesn’t always work. The main pool was absolutely dirty and at times smelled like urine. At 8:30 in the morning, it was still filthy from the day before, with leftover food and trash floating around. The kids’ pool was actually very nice. The beach was completely dirty—seaweed just lies there for days, completely uncollected. On top of that, aggressive vendors pass by every two minutes trying to sell you something. You simply can’t lie down and relax in peace. There are only two air-conditioned places on the whole resort: your room and the sports bar. That’s it. We did really enjoy the Italian restaurant. The service was top-notch and the food was excellent! Overall, I absolutely do not recommend Bavaro Princess.
