Super disappointed

Upon arrival, my bags were taken from me to be placed with other guests’ so that the bellboy could take them to lunch room. Normally I wouldn’t mind, but I just had a carryon, so I wasn’t keen to tip for just that. They were pretty insistent. I was asked about upgrades, at which time I was informed that WiFi wasn’t included in the price of the room, which was frustrating. I tried to upgrade prior to my arrival because I wanted a better room, but was unable and planned on upgrading anyway. My “upgraded” room had nowhere to put my clothing and was very loud at night due to the music that played until 11pm every single night. The WiFi that wasn’t free was very slow and spotty. The temperature of the shower was very inconsistent. There were few umbrellas on the upgraded beach and the staff allows people to keep their towels overnight to save an umbrella, so I never got one. Same goes for the pool. The pool chairs are really uncomfortable and some of them have plastic pieces on them that stick up and are kind of sharp. When you lay the pool chair flat, there is a bar across your back that is very uncomfortable. I don’t eat meat, so the dining options for me were limited mostly to pizza or pasta. The beverages that they serve are awful brands of alcohol. I am also not one to do daily room cleaning because of bad experiences in the past. I received a notice two days in a row that it is essentially not allowed for a room to go more than two days without being cleaned. I felt that they were trying to manipulate me into having my room cleaned so that the maid would get a tip. WIth that being said, the maid left clean towels during my stay and I tipped her for that, especially because I ended up getting a total of 3 beach towels when they refused to give you more than one in the beginning. Would not recommend this place for somewhere to get some R&R at all, which is what I’m after for beach vacations.

Poor service, beautiful beach

The beach is beautiful , and the area well maintained. Check-in took about an hour They are constantly running out of beach towels. After 4 PM, usually no towels at all. In the morning, they open late. When I tried to complain at the reception desk, the receptionist didn't even look at me, but continued to sort out paperwork. No even "sorry" At the restaurant, the waiters are not attentive to people who are calling them. As a result, the drinks arrive by the end of the meal. We ended up going ourselves to the bar for vine and outside for tea. Beach volleyball is listed as an activity, but doesn't exist. Nobody calls for it or tries to organize the game. The net is located directly next to the sea, so even if they had a game, the ball would be constantly in the water. No other activities on the beach either. I saw aerobics twice within a week. All activities are around the pool. Since the pool is not large, there is no quiet place there. Music is very loud, and people are shouting everywhere when playing games. In the afternoon, the wind on the beach is so strong, people had to build protective walls from beach chairs to stop the sand blowing in their eyes. Because of that, we had to leave the beach after 3 PM. However, this may be only winter weather specific and not a problem other seasons

Mediocre resort

I stayed for 4 nights and 5 days at the Gran Ventana resort and found it mediocre at best. In summary, I was underwhelmed by Gran Ventana and would not return or recommend this resort to others. The location was good, the rooms were fair at best but small, the food was not good but did not make me sick, the pool was nice, the drinks were strong and plentiful, and the beach was beautiful. Resort The resort itself was about 15 minutes from the airport, which was a nice way to start the trip. When we turned into the complex the resort was in, other passengers on the shared shuttle seemed concerned about how the area looked and were grateful it wasn't their resort... As the driver said, it is in a complex with 12 other properties, but several look abandoned and run down. There is a small, rundown mall in the complex that I did not visit as well as an emergency treatment center that I thankfully did not need to visit. The Gran Ventana resort itself is fine but not extraordinary in any way. The lobby is nice but I didn't spend any time there. The stage area is minimal with some decorations stapled on and flashing lights and small tables people sit at to use the free internet during the day. The entire resort only takes a couple minutes to walk across, lobby to beach. Overall, nothing special, maybe slightly dated, but not dirty or bad. Food The food was not good, but not bad. I did not get food poisoning but I didn't particularly enjoy anything I ate and always found myself hungry. Things were tasteless or plain, average at best. The main cafeteria for buffets was just that, randomly curated college cafeteria food. There was no clear theme to the dishes or stations, items were random and didn't seem to add up to a comprehensive meal; There would be beef stew, then oily mixed vegetables, then Mexican rice, then a vaguely named layered dish, then french fries. Always plain grilled fish, pork, and chicken. There was always a long line for the choose-your-own-pasta station, which amounted to flavorless mush in my opinion. There was always a small salad bar of random items and cabbage or lettuce. The lunch snack bar was fine, the same burgers, wings, fries, nachos every day but you can't take food with you to the beach which was something I was looking forward to. The Ocean Grill restaurant was the absolute worst. I got the steak which honestly tasted like it was boiled somehow? Rubbery, did not look like the right color for steak, and honestly inedible. I had the "baked potato" which was obviously microwaved and left for second dinner at the cafeteria. The Italian Sapore di Mare was in the middle, also got steak which was extremely chewy and just tasted okay. After pasta for most meals at the cafeteria, I didn't try it there, but other people got it and seemed to like it okay. The Octopus Dominican restaurant was the best dining experience of the trip, with the mofongo the best thing I ate the entire time, some mix of chicken, plantain, and a spicy tomato sauce. The sangria at the restaurants was the best thing on the menu consistently. Dress codes were lax or not enforced as far as I could tell, men always in cargo shorts. Drinks and bars throughout the resort were fine, only busy right before lunch, and drinks were strong to my taste. Room The rooms are like hotel rooms, nothing particularly said resort to me. The buildings just have rows of rooms and no elevator. I had a room in a corner overlooking the pool. I stayed alone, and honestly don't know how two people's stuff would fit in a room like that, I thought it was small. Only a couple outlets I could find in the room, and of those, only two plugs worked consistently. Air conditioning was functional, always kept my room cool. Bedding wasn't changed every day as I found the day before's sand tucked into the bed with me. Pillows were weirdly hard and the daily yoga instructor even remarked about how many people came to the class because their neck hurt. Housekeeping seemed to take all day, starting in the late morning and towels finally being delivered close to 5pm, so when I spent dawn to 4pm on the beach, I still got a knock about returning towels after I had already showered with what was available. The bathroom fan or air conditioning was super loud so I found myself cooling the room during the day and turning off the air conditioning at night or for hours at a time to stop the noise. I overheard two people talking about how they were advised to use the safe at check in, so I always kept my suitcase closed and locked with valuables when I wasn't in there. The minibar fridge took 2 days to get things cold, so when items were restocked when I arrived, it was room temperature beer, soda, and water. I opened a can and bottle of soda and left them in the fridge to cool, but they weren't replaced the next day, so I had half a can of beer and flat soda unless I physically removed and dumped them out, so service could have been better there too. Beach, Pool, and Entertainment I was there for the beach and found it to be clean and virtually seaweed free. Chairs are stacked up at the end of the day, so to get a spot you have to pull a chair off a stack and drag it where you want to go which was hard as a petite person with a beach bag. I was usually at the beat at 8am or earlier and almost all of the umbrellas were claimed with towels and chairs but no one would be there for several hours. Chairs were basic, the last day I had the worst, sunken in chair of my stay that I eventually swapped out when someone abandoned another one. There were many vendors on the beach, so be prepared for that. A lot of people got foot massages and hair styling, I did not engage with any vendors. The pool was the party spot, people would bring their own speakers and gather lots of chairs. I honestly only dipped in the pool once because I was focused on getting all the beach time I could, but it seemed fine and clean but relatively small. Throughout the day there was scheduled entertainment and activities, but I only made it to yoga, beach zumba, and some of the evening shows. They didn't really announce activities starting and the schedule is hidden by the towel return. I enjoyed morning yoga/stretch and thought beach zumba was fun and goofy in front of everyone, the instructor was very personable. Night entertainment varied and I was usually worn out by the time the shows started, but I did stick around for Valentine's Day live music, which was really cute, a few couples dancing. Because the stage area was the only spot with free wifi, people were usually zoned out looking at their phones while people tried to entertain. Overall, cute, but not spectacular. The free wifi strength and speed depended on how many people were using it, but was surprisingly good enough for emails and basic social media use. It rained on and off one day of my trip and I thought there would be more alternative entertainment, but it seemed like people just went back to their rooms or drank.
