Good Value

Almost a 2 hour drive from the Santo Domingo Airport. Staff at checkin not very friendly. The grounds are beautiful. Room was clean and comfortable but an elevator would have been a welcome addition. The restaurant reservations process was not a problem although we were only allowed to book 3 reservations for our 5 night stay. The beach was beautiful but the water is very rocky and water shoes are a MUST. If I didn't have water shoes I wouldn't have been able to enjoy the water, SO BRING WATER SHOES!!!!! I traveled with my 2 sons and myself and we had a wonderful time. Overall we had a great time and I would/will return

Excellent place ...

I just completed my trip here and want to give an honest review of the place as some of the review here I believe are not fair to the establishment or people are not doing their homework, and are getting let down about things that matter to them, but not what this place is about. Positive: Beach here is amazing. Staff is great, and does best to accommodate. The food in my opinion is very good, but different. I can see why people would complain about food, but many of the fruits, eggs, and stuff are local and tasted phenomenal. I love the fact that the soda had no corn syrup. All the activities and accomodations were great. Again, this is subjective because great of different to different people. If your expecting a Medieval Knights, or Pirates Voyage type show, then you will be disappointed. But the shows are basic dancers, etc. It's really what you make of it,and we met some great people during our stay. Coffees were awesome, drinks were good. I would definitely plan a trip here again. There is Dreams and the Hilton nearby which I would be curious to try as I was going to book Dreams through a Costco package but we came here as a group of 20+ through a recommendation of a family friend, so I took the bad reviews with a grain of sand, and I am glad I did. This vacation was overall amazing, and my children had a blast, I recommend it. I don't smoke so they did have dedicated no smoking areas. My children loved all the birds, turtles, fish they had everywhere and loved feeding them. Negative: Although I feel there are some negatives, they didn't bother me, but I feel some people need to know what they are getting into as I see in the posts, people are being petty imo. There is a cafe on a Pier that is not inclusive, and has an amazing view however the drinks at the bar were subpar imo to the inclusive drinks all over the rest of the resort. There are a bunch of stores numbered #1-#30+ on the right side of the pier where some stores try to sell you coffee, trinkets, etc....avoid at all costs! They are crooks, and try to rob you blind, and very pushy and use pressure techniques to make you buy. I am surprised the resort didntemtion this at check-in. I come from Brooklyn, NY so I will not fall I to this hustle trap, not did I. This is not a negative, but if you want to book excursions to island of saona, or buggy rides, you need to ask around, and negotiate prices or you can be taken advantage of. There are guys by the Coral Photo area that will set these trips up for you which is by the buffet, and they gave me great prices. There are guys with brown shirts who sell timeshare type traveler club, and they hook you by saying whether you got your free intro gift of a bottle of alcohol and tee shirt......then they try to hook you on a vacation timeshare thingy. I realized I was hooked when it was too late, and immediately got out of it....don't blame them it's a business, but easy to avoid. Some people may complain about the beef, however if people are expecting top cuts at the cheapest prices, that's where you go wrong. The fish, and chicken were great. I myself thought the food was terrific however I did speak to two managers by the buffet, and people in charge about techniques like vinegar and such on the cheaper cuts of beef like acidic techniques like vinegar, or mallet that they would use to help the meat break up easy and become more tender. They stated it's something they would look into. Again I'm not saying that using bottom-of-the-barrel type cuts, but it's no prime rib. My beds in the room were a bit hard and smaller than I was used to. I was a part of a family of four, and this didn't bother me much, but I could see why people do complain. Again because of hurricane Dorian (which missed us BTW), as a precaution they moved us to higher ground in an upgraded room, and the beds, and overall rooms were much nicer. Again, you get what you pay for. I believe the rooms should have softer and comfortable beds no matter what room you stay in. Again, didn't ding them here, but bringing it up as to let you know if you want the better beds, get a better room. Mentions: I am not a drinker, but the drinks are good, and plentiful. Again no top shelf alcohols unless you go to the right bars. Very few Americans here, mostly French, German, Italian, and Argentinean. I spoke broken Spanish so it helped a lot, and yes there are English speakers salt and peppered all over. I recommend renting the large huts poolside or by the beach to pass the time for $10/day. If you want a lock for your room safe, the rental fee is $3.50 a day, and ask for it by front desk when you check in. Our Amstar drivers for pickup and drop off were great, and recommend tipping them. Coral Pictures arranges and helped takes professional photos with and without animals.....you need to negotiate with them or you can get cleaned out here. I had 150 pictures taken with monkeys, and parrots, and family photos for $300. Their initial asking was much more, and per picture price will go up if you do less pictures....just saying. They have plenty of restaurants and a snack bar that has food 24 hours a day....the snack bar comes in very handy but we never bothered with the restaurants that they have like the Brazilian Mexican or Japanese hibachi place so I can't comment on those. we were very happy with the buffet service 3 times a day during our 11 day stay. Overall I believe you're getting a very good value for your money and the beach is definitely worth it. The pool is nothing special, but it's a pool ...hope this helps.

Worst purchase ever

The resort was not what I expected. I should know better about this place. It was so unpleasant being on the beach, because everyone on there were smoking, so disgusting. The air conditioner in the room was another problem, can’t be set up to the right temperature, always sweeting in my own room. The buffet area needs to be improve :soo hot, people ever there were eating and sweetting like crazy. The safe box, we need to pay extra in order to use it, furthermore no combination, we need to carry on the safe key or hidden it in the room, something so stupid. Another thing, people from maintenance are very incompetent , the same is for service guest. I would not return to this place, and I would not recommended to anyone. This place should be called ” Smoking be Dead Canoa Resort” and not “Be live collection canoa”
