Our Awesome Trip to Iberostar Joia Montego Bay
We needed to escape a very long cold Canadian winter and we chose one of our favourite countries Jamaica. We decided to go and support the folks in Jamaica who were recovering from the recent hurricane. Joia is a five star resort in all respects. Food is incredible. The beach is a great walk. The pools offer everything. And then there are the room butlers. We had Omar and Christopher as our two remarkable butlers. These two fellows were there for us day and night assisting us with every room need we had to reservations, just everything. We will not return to Joia without booking a room with a butler again. Bottom line - come visit this very special place in Jamaica!

Mr and Mrs Blunt go to Joia
We went for 3 weeks in January. First and foremost, the staff made the trip. Every person we interacted with was friendly and kind, always asking how our visit was going, could they do anything for us... honestly, best staff we've ever come across. Hats off to Guest Services for being helpful to the beyond 24/7. Shout outs to Basiene, Rennecia, Michael (front door), Cassandra (wonderful bartender), Tashene (our housekeeper), Steffan (waiter at the French and Italian restaurants), Lushana (lovely hostess at breakfast and lunch), Devan and all the swim up bar staff, and soooooo many more! Golf course was gorgeous! A couple of notes - was difficult at times to get money. ATMs were not working and hotel provided no info about how to get some. Was tough at times to get any - which we were getting to tip staff! Almost no food was hot - meal after meal lukewarm to cold. Some exceptions were fresh made things like omelets, pasta at lunch and on occasion at a dinner restaurant. When they put a microwave in at the lunch buffet, it was behind a counter and made it hard for already busy staff. Also - the ice cream station was not cold enough. A bit of an issue about the noise. Music started at 8 am - always scratchy and too loud. Then there was music overlapping - sitting between the hotel and the beach bar were 2 completely different kinds of music playing at the same time. No way to block it out. And even at the spa where I thought I could relax in some silence, not an option to turn it off in the rooms. I don't think it was worth the money we paid - maybe 30% less would have been more fair. The hotel definitely needs upgrades and hopefully most of these issues will be addressed when they close to make those upgrades. Overall - we loved our time there. Jamiaca is such a beautiful country with wonderful people. We've been many times and will be back again for sure! Colin and Janet W

Lots of positives but also some turnoffs
9 night stay A lot of positives: The staff including all beach and pool support, bar and restaurant servers, and housekeeping. All responsive and fun to interact with. Top Notch!!! Our pool view balcony room was spacious and clean. Pool cleanliness was outstanding! The quality of meals. Outstanding restaurants with great variety! Great entertainment content and variety for the evening and lots of on site activities during the day. So why not 5 stars? First turn off…they function like a time share. Insistent at check-in that you meet with your concierge the next morning so you can be “brought up to speed on all the resort activities”. When you do so little is shared and they suggest they meet you for breakfast the following day to do so. If you agree they have you meet them at the concierge desk and the shuttle you off to a sales office for a 90 minute presentation to try and sell you a club membership. We bailed upon entering the sales office realizing what was happening. Never did get any introduction to resort activities. Second, no reservations for dinner except at the Japanese restaurant where they seat four couples at once around a grill. Other popular (and great!) restaurants are first come first serve and have a line before opening if you want assurances you can get in. If you cannot you go on a waitlist and they text you, but this makes it very difficult to plan on attending any of the entertainment (which is great). One night we tried getting on a waitlist list at around 7 for a restaurant that open at 6 and never got in. If you get in by standing in line, you have to go right away, and then you are done at 7-7:30 and left hanging around to 9-9:30 for the entertainment. Also a restaurant turnoff is that they insist you order your entire meal all at once…. App, entries, wine, desert. Only thing I can think of on this is that with no reservations they can quickly turn over tables as soon as a party finished, but restaurants were never completely full any time we ate so kind of crazy. I guess the plus is it upped our alcohol intake after dinner ……. Clearly not a 5 star relaxing process. Definitely a rise early resort to land a pool/ beach chair especially if you want some shade. At times not enough to go around. Short on hot shower water both early and before dinner. Last, a common issue that exists for most all inclusive stays. No Guidance on tipping. We opted on the appreciative side. Left $5 for Bfast and lunch buffets, tipped bar servers as we would if paying, and the same for dinner….$20-40. Wish the resort would provide up front guidance. Seemed like we were in the minority by leaving a tip. I actually asked the concierge and got an if you feel it is appropriate response.. she looked surprised like no one had ever asked before.

Grateful for an unbelievable trip
We were really blown away by our experience here at JOIA! The resort had a few spots on the roof and some palm tree damage but other than that you would have never known they went through a category 5 hurricane. The staff is amazing hands down. Shout out to Andrew at the steak house, Justine at the French restaurant, Ace in the theater and Travis at the pool Bar! The food was fantastic and each restaurant provided a different experience that met expectations I have never had at other all inclusives. The beach was amazing, clean and great service for drinks. It was nice that our section was private and did not deal with vendors harassing they were just floating by and super nice. Cannot speak more highly of this place and can’t wait to see the renovations. I highly recommend JOIA for a couples or friends getaway. Please come and support the wonderful people of Jamaica and continue to help them rebuild. We will be back!
