Wyndham Resorts – Viva Maya- Management Policy of Overcharging for Extra Guests
Wyndham Resorts – Viva Maya- Management Policy of Overcharging Extra Guests In early October, 2025, I made a single reservation for myself at Viva Maya, which cost $1,024 for 5 days, but I asked for two queen beds as my son might be joining me. When my son said he was going to join me, I attempted to change the reservation as the cost for two was the same as the cost for one on the Wyndham Website at that time, but as all rooms were booked, the agent at Wyndham said that the hotel would charge me a little extra for his food as he was staying in my already booked room. When my son arrived on November 30th, they charged him $1,252.09 as that was their “policy” for additional guests staying in the same room. After repeated calls and discussions. Viva agreed to refund $289, which they did when we checked out on December 5th. Later that day, I had some time and sent a note to Wyndham Resorts stating that when I got back to the US, I would take them to court for the remainder. Within 5 minutes, I got an email from the management at Viva Maya that they would refund another $727, essentially charging my son $236 for 5 days of meals which is reasonable. My son said the food wasn't all that good, but that is another matter. On January 9th-over a month later, the $727 was credited to my son's credit card after more "prodding" on our part. This is poor behavior for a 4-Star Hotel and more concerning, the staff and local management enforced this fraudulent policy. I am sure I wasn't the first or the last victim of this policy. The corporate office did update their website, so the room charges are now based on the number of occupants in their room rather than one price for 1-4 occupants as was the case when I made reservations and later on December 3, 2025. So, I made some positive financial impact at least for Wyndham Resorts as they can now collect more money from guests. It is regrettably that there are so many honest, hardworking personnel throughout Viva Maya who are required to enforce this policy to overcharge guests. The management's response to this issue failed to mention that they would eliminate that policy to just charge extra guests for extra meals, etc., so buyer beware. It is regrettable that Viva Maya has this policy to overcharge folks when they are on vacation and trying to relax. You would think that Viva or Wyndham would offer me a free stay since I found this issue with their establishment, but no commendation for my efforts to correct this. That tells me a lot about Wyndham!! Steven Donatiello

New Years trip with Family & Friends
We were at the Viva Maya by Wyndham from December 28 - January 4th. We went as a family of 4 (aged 21 and 16) and with friends. We were a group of 8 travelling together. This is our second time at this resort; the first being 6 years ago. PROS: We LOVE the location of this resort in Playacar. It is in a gated community, very safe and we love to have the freedom to leave the resort and walk, ride bikes or go to the small market across the street. The resort has a good number of bikes available, and we never had an issue getting the number we needed. There are many things to do at this resort (especially for kids) such as the trapeze, archery, and water activities (catamaran, paddle boards, and kayaks) We enjoy being active so this was great to have access to. The beach has soft sand, and there was very little seaweed - if any was there, they did a great job cleaning it up. We had two rooms: one being in building 3 (further from the beach) and one in building 2 (closer). They were clean, however, it would have been nice to have drinks in the fridge as there never was any. I did appreciate the water bottle refilling stations in the room blocks. The grounds crew are amazing - they were constantly making the resort look amazing. The cafe was new from our first visit so we enjoyed getting our morning fix there everyday. CONS: We had to deal with many line-ups during our stay. The buffet grilling stations always had a long line as did the bars. I understand that we were traveling at very high season, however, it became tiresome as the week went on. The resort has 4 restaurants and if you stay a week, you can book three. Although we booked within 12 hours of landing, we were only able to get reservations at 8 pm which would not be our first choice. We feel that there should be some reservations held back to ensure those who are arriving throughout the week have a little more choice in times. During our stay, there was no space at the Mexican restaurants which we found disappointing. Overall we did notice the food in all places (buffet and restaurants) not as good as our first visit. There was always a pasta station at lunch, but not at dinner, and we did find the lunch selection the best. The other issue was at the snack bar. They couldn't get out pizza and fries fast enough before everything was all gone. This caused more of a line and people getting frustrated waiting. I would also add that the staff were not replenishing food at the pace it was needed so there were times you would find empty containers. We came to this hotel with Air Canada vacations and did not have a good experience with the rep Laura. We were trying to get a piece of luggage back to us which was left on the plane, and she made it clear that this was not her job to assist with these kinds of issues. She seemed to only want to sell excursions, but not do anything to help the travelers beyond this. I understand that asking her to call the airport (because she speaks Spanish and we don't) above and beyond her job description, however, we would hope that there would have been a little more empathy to our situation and she would have done more. In addition, there was no posting of bus departure times which is something we have always had accessed to with it either being posted or in a binder for travelers to check on their time. I am not sure if Laura is hired by the resort, but good feedback if she is working there, representing the hotel.

Trapeze at Viva Maya
I was at the hotel for 13 days and i went to the trapeze almost every day. The team was very nice and they taught everything from the basics so even absolute beginners could take part at the activity. I felt very safe and everything was perfect, i really felt like I was learning to fly! After learning the basics you could also learn fun tricks. Anyone can go and try, even usually not-so-sporty people like myself were having a blast! 10/10 experience, would go again!!! <3
