Wonderful Resort for a great price

This was my fourth time to stay at an all-inclusive resort and this resort was one of my favorites. The beach was beautiful! The staff was kind and attentive. The resort was clean and well kept. We especially enjoyed the Zumba classes with Jorge! The food at the restaurants was really good; however, the pool side buffet and main buffet had limited options. The evening shows were family friendly which we appreciated. There were a variety of activities every day to choose from (beach volleyball, beach yoga, dance lessons, Bingo, kayaks, catamarans). Overall, I would highly reccomend the resort!

Fun Vacation

This resort was overall a great experience. I read a lot of reviews ahead of time and will make comments regarding the things that I had questions on from reading through reviews. First, it is very helpful to bring a cup (Tervis Tumbler or likewise) for easy access to unlimited self serve (water, lemonade, soda machine). This is especially a favorite for me since I love to drink soda all day and at this resort I didn't have to wait in a long line with people getting fancy drinks. Again, you can get the soda, water, lemonade all the time at the bar simply by getting it yourself. They do have cups, but they are smaller than I would like, so it was helpful to have a larger cup. This is really a great set-up because it keeps the line for specialty drinks really short, rarely wait more than 5 minutes. It seems like people were happy with the specialty drinks as well and it was easy access. If you want a straw, be sure to ask. The food at the beach area is also easy to get all day long...it has a variety, but the best stuff is pizza, burgers, and fries. My wife loves the chips and guacamole. This food was essentially available all day from about 11 am - 5 pm and then again from 8 pm till the middle of the night. The specialty restaurants were really great and the staff was friendly in the reservations process for the meals. Each one has its own unique feel and the food is much better than any of the Buffett's. You should make sure to sign up for these right away The resort sits literally inside a resort area that has several other hotels. The resort area makes it very safe to walk around a 6K loop that surrounds a golf course and walks by the entrance of a half a dozen other resorts. The 6k course is used by a lot of people to run/walk and bike. There is a market with little shops within an easy walk of the entrance, takes less than 5 minutes to walk. They provide free rental of bikes and we took these into town a couple of times, by bike its about 10-15 minutes with more shops than you could imagine. They have archery for free, a great weight room with fitness equipment of all kinds, the only complaint is that it opens at 8 am - 8 pm, I would rather it be open from 6 am - 6 pm. The staff for activities are friendly and a surprising number of people participate in volleyball, crazy games, beach soccer, aqua gym, etc. Sometimes the staff can be a bit pushy, but easy enough to say that you don't want to participate. The evening shows are definitely a bit cheesy, but much better than raunchy that is normal for these kinds of resorts. I put the dancing at a level of an okay college dance club, but they have clearly put a lot of effort into it. Surprisingly the internet works fairly well all over the resort. Rooms were comfortable, but walls were in fact paper thin. We were frustrated the first night about the noise of our neighbors and their children, but then after that night we simply started laughing about all of the funny things they said...surely they knew we could hear them? The music is also very loud at night, so don't plan to go to bed till 11 pm and you will be all set. This is the music from the show. Pillows were hard in my opinion, but its not a big deal. The beach is filled with a lot of Europeans, so be prepared for bathing suits that are in style for that part of the world. I have found the key to having a great time on these kind of vacations is to appreciate each moment, not get too picky about the small stuff and to laugh a lot. It makes for a great time.

Got what we paid for

What can I say, we got what we paid for. The beach was awesome, very busy but we still got chairs together on the beach every day. There was no swim up bar and I saw a waiter once that asked if we needed anything while on the beach. The buffet food was horrible but the restaurants were very very good. We did not get reservations for the Italian but I heard that was excellent as well. The rooms were nothing special but served their purpose and were not bad. No brand name alcohol. I was not disappointed with the resort but I have been to much nicer resorts before. I would spend the extra money and have an option of name brand alcohol and better service (waiters/swim up bar/better food).

Hotel Description

Viva Wyndham Maya in Playa del Carmen: Your Inner Island Child Awaits

When playtime calls you south of the border, make your way to Viva Wyndham Maya in Playa del Carmen, where you'll party all night and play all day for an amazing all-inclusive price.

Viva Wyndham Maya sits on a beautiful, Mexican, alabaster-sand beach, where the blue stretches so far it's hard to tell where the water ends and the sky begins. The oceanfront pool, with a bubbling Jacuzzi is magnetizing as well. Your kids will love having their own children's pool nearby. Viva Wyndham Maya doesn't make you play alone, offering organized beach games or water polo. Sailing and windsurfing lessons will challenge the land-lubber in you. If your interest involves deeper water, check out the PADI-certified Viva Wyndham Diving Center where, for an additional fee, dive pros can take you to the Maya Reef, the second longest barrier reef in the world. Here a colorful world of creatures is just waiting for you and your underwater camera.

Are you one of those stressed-out souls needing a little more than warm sun and cool water to untie your knots? Then the Renova Spa with its sauna and steam bath is just the thing. If you really want to make your vacation memorable, go to the spa's beach cottage, where you can get a Mayan tattoo or Caribbean braids. And what's more romantic than a Couples Moonlight Massage?

After you've built up an appetite with all these activities, you can choose from six restaurants to satisfy your hunger. Portofino offers Mediterranean dinners, while Hacienda Don Diego is the place to get authentic Mexican fare. The all-inclusive rate also includes dining privileges at two restaurants at Viva Wyndham Maya's sister property, Viva Wyndham Azteca.

The fun doesn't end after dinner. Nightly entertainment, themed parties and an on-site discotheque means you'll be rocking long into the evening. The resort has a covered theater that seats 600 people, so evening entertainment isn't crowded. This vacation is definitely one for your inner child.
