last minute trip

This resort was ok. I think "all inclusive" is a bit generous. We booked on a Monday afternoon for a Friday arrival so maybe our options at the resort were limited because of a short stay. We were only allowed to eat at the cafeteria style restaurant (which was ok), and the snack bar which was great because of it's location. Would have loved to see some Tacos instead of burgers, hot dogs and pizza, since I was in Mexico after all. The beach is beautiful, and convenient to the Bar. Loved sitting under palm trees as I watched the world go by. We were only at this resort for two days, and one day it was heavy rain but none the less we enjoyed our time at the resort. Painting Ceramics was a great idea as the rain poured down. And now I have a great reminder of a fun get away on my desk! Plan on about one hour shuttle ride from and to the airport. I'd consider returning for a longer stay if "All Inclusive" means you get to try any restaurant at any time during your stay. Water bottles in your room are not free, they must be purchased at the gift store.

Good for the price, if the price is low.

This was a good stay for the price. We got a fantastic deal for a quick getaway just after Thanksgiving. Here's my bullet points: The beach area is excellent. The food, outside of Portofino, is well below average The drinks are EXTREMELY watered down. The pool closes at 8pm (way too early) and the jacuzzis are luke warm at best. The hotel grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The room is fair Overall - it was a great stay for the price. I would have been very disappointed if I would have paid more. The dining, the drink service, and the pool areas were the biggest letdowns.

OK visit - not the best & not the worst

We spent 5 nights here in late August 2017 and, for the most part, enjoyed our visit. Although, there were a couple of things that could have been better. First the good: 1) the beach itself was fantastic. Great for swimming with no undertow. The main pool area was OK, but a bit crowded with lots of kids. The adult pool is nicer, but it's quite a way from the beach. 2) The bar staff (Eron?) was friendly and remembered what you were drinking when you re-ordered, even the next day. The housekeeping and wait staff was great too. 3) Good location within a secured area (Playacar). 4) The al-a-carte restaurants ('Hacienda Don Diego' and especially 'Portofino') were nice and had really good food (and air conditioned). But, book a day before because they fill up fast. 5) the grounds where manicured and well kept. Now, the not so good: 1) This is my biggest complaint - the lack of available beach chairs because people reserve them early in the day with their towels. By 12:00-1:00, most of the good chairs are gone, even though there's no one using them for hours. By this time, the only available chairs are side-by-side and not shaded. They need a "2-hour rule" where towels are removed after 2 hours of no activity at the chair. I've seen this work at other resorts and it keeps people from reserving a chair at 9AM and then leave to go eat, shop, sleep, etc, then come back at 3PM to use the chair. 2) the La Terraza buffet food was good, but fairly typical. They say that each night is a theme night, but it's not evident in the food selection. For example, on 'French night', there was no sign of French food (unless you count French fries?). But, the absolute worst part was that the open-air dining room was sweltering and had little air flow. It was uncomfortable to eat hot food, or even enjoy hot coffee at breakfast, when you're sweating like a dog! 3) the reception upon arrival was not very welcoming. We received a "welcome drink", but no one said 'welcome to the resort', it was just handed to us! Nor did they ask about our stay during check-out, just asked for room & towel cards. Very robotic. Same with some of the "guest services" staff. 4) Fees at an all-inclusive. They charge $2/day to use the room safe, $5 for 30 minute of computer use with lousy internet reception, and $5 for lost key replacement. Ugh! 5) Room was nothing special. Very basic. One bottled water per visit. It was nice to have a refrigerator though. 6) One beach towel per guest per day. I kept one over night and was told 'no' when I went to get a fresh one the next day. Really!?!? Overall, I'm not sure I'd go back. I might recommend this resort to a friend, but let them know what to expect. If the price was right, I'd go back. But, if it wasn't, I'd try another resort. It certainly wasn't the worst, but after spending vacations at other all-inclusive resorts, I know there are better ones out there.

Hotel Description

Viva Wyndham Maya in Playa del Carmen: Your Inner Island Child Awaits

When playtime calls you south of the border, make your way to Viva Wyndham Maya in Playa del Carmen, where you'll party all night and play all day for an amazing all-inclusive price.

Viva Wyndham Maya sits on a beautiful, Mexican, alabaster-sand beach, where the blue stretches so far it's hard to tell where the water ends and the sky begins. The oceanfront pool, with a bubbling Jacuzzi is magnetizing as well. Your kids will love having their own children's pool nearby. Viva Wyndham Maya doesn't make you play alone, offering organized beach games or water polo. Sailing and windsurfing lessons will challenge the land-lubber in you. If your interest involves deeper water, check out the PADI-certified Viva Wyndham Diving Center where, for an additional fee, dive pros can take you to the Maya Reef, the second longest barrier reef in the world. Here a colorful world of creatures is just waiting for you and your underwater camera.

Are you one of those stressed-out souls needing a little more than warm sun and cool water to untie your knots? Then the Renova Spa with its sauna and steam bath is just the thing. If you really want to make your vacation memorable, go to the spa's beach cottage, where you can get a Mayan tattoo or Caribbean braids. And what's more romantic than a Couples Moonlight Massage?

After you've built up an appetite with all these activities, you can choose from six restaurants to satisfy your hunger. Portofino offers Mediterranean dinners, while Hacienda Don Diego is the place to get authentic Mexican fare. The all-inclusive rate also includes dining privileges at two restaurants at Viva Wyndham Maya's sister property, Viva Wyndham Azteca.

The fun doesn't end after dinner. Nightly entertainment, themed parties and an on-site discotheque means you'll be rocking long into the evening. The resort has a covered theater that seats 600 people, so evening entertainment isn't crowded. This vacation is definitely one for your inner child.
