Not what we expected

I made my review title not what we expected because after reading so many reviews, good and bad, I was completed floored that this resort would have any bad reviews at all! Let's start with check-in, easy breezy is all I can say! The bell hop brought us to our room and explained a lot to us at the same time. The room was bigger than most and the ac was pumping out cold air. We did a lot of traveling that day so the pool buffet was just enough to satisfy our lunch hunger. Yes it's the same food daily but it's the poolside buffet. Dont forget to make your ala carte reservations asap. As you probably read it depends on the length of stay is how many reservations you can make. But that's not true... we stayed 5 days and 4 nights, which gave us 2 reservations... that's because you can only do 2 at a time. You can go ask for a 3rd after the 2 are over. As for us, the buffet dinners were more than satisfying and always had different options. Now for the beach and pool I rated only good and here is why: yes there is seaweed and we are early goers. We would be on the beach at 9am and the workers were out the cleaning as best they could and combing the beach daily! I knew coming to Azteca there wasn't a swim up bar but I personally was ok with that! Other than that it was perfect! Finally cleanliness: my room was taken care of daily and we always came back to a stocked fridge and towel animals! They say you shouldn't tip but a few USD goes a long way. I never had to remind our bartender in the evening what we drink and a fresh one was always ready for us! I would definitely be back!

Well worth the money, maybe we should have paid fo

Remembering that this is one of the three cheapest all inclusives in Playa del Carmen, I think we got more than our money’s worth. If you’re not going to be there much, this is great choice if you know what you’re booking. Don’t pay for McDonald’s and expect five star dining Nd you should be quite pleased. Room was nice and clean. 1306 is third floor over pool so you get WiFi from pool if you’re near the “balcony “. No elevator. Don’t expect to sit on balcony, it’s just for advertisement purposes or to get fresh air. Not even a foot wide. Don’t expect fridge to be refilled but you can grab a six pack at the store cheaper than upgrading to luxury resort. Beach very nice and one small pool plenty for that size resort. They have several drink stations so you can stay safely hydrated. Seaweed that time of year. Resort can clean beach but it’s still in the water. Just do snorkeling or scuba excursion to get out past it. Or jet ski kayak stand up paddle board sailboat etc. don’t expect drink service at beach or pool unless in vip section. But you have to get up to go to bathroom next to bar anyway. Just grab couple drinks on your way back or pay extra for luxury resort The only thing that would keep me from returning was the heat in the restaurant, lobby and bar area. Al fresco dining is common at AI’s. However other resorts have it own and exposed to the ocean breezes. Whoever designed azteca apparently failed to recognize that a closed off plaza is going to be sweltering hot in the tropical summers. Then they put their Mayan a la carte restaurant next to a fake center of standing stagnant water. I was eaten alive by mosquitoes no matter how much bug spray I used. The only place to really hang out at night is the bar area even for families and it was so hot that after a few minutes, people were drenched in sweat. This is not a pleasant way to spend your vacation. By the time we got through the line to check out in the lobby, I was more than ready to leave. Thank goodness the taxi had air conditioning. If heat doesn’t bother you, this is otherwise a great resort. Food was good with great variety and always had freshly grilled fish. If you can’t find something there, you are too picky and should probably stay home. Safe is $2 a day Taxi is $7 to anywhere in playa. Get out and see the area. Alux cave restaurant is awesome but pricey. Just think of it as an excursion Go swim in the cenotes, see the ruins, walk on Fifth Avenue and take the public bus to xcaret xel ha xplore Tulum etc. it’s safer than the u.s. cities. If you have a half day to spare, do an excursion to chichen itza. Renting a car is very expensive but we do it about one day a year to get down the less developed area south of Tulum. Beautiful unspoiled beaches await. Second longest barrier reef in the world is just off shore. You are really wasting an opportunity if you don’t snorkel or scuba there. But for amazing scuba, just take the ferry over to Cozumel.

Well worth the money, maybe we should have paid fo Plenty of chairs/shade

Great Resort

We were here 5 nights, March 28 – April 2. It is a wonderful place! The resort itself is small, very walkable. This is what we liked. The grounds were always clean with little critters running around! The resort is quiet, we liked this as well!! Lots of activities going on if you want to join in. But the beach and pool area are very laid back. We were usually to the beach by 9am and had no problem getting chairs together for the 16 people in our group. There were very few chairs at the pool and were all taken early. Not a big deal for us, we prefer the beach. We would walk up and swim and go back to the beach. The rooms were spacious and SUPER clean. The staff did an amazing job. Yes, they are old and somewhat dated. But they are clean & comfortable for time you spend in them. I slept amazing every night! The food was good everywhere. We ate the buffet at both resorts, the Mexican @ Maya and the Italian @ Azteca. Service was great everywhere. The pool bar lunch was the best!! Still dreaming of the nachos! Bartenders were quick & friendly. The rare line moved very quickly. I am not a smoker, or a fan of it. I was concerned when I read reviews that this was a problem here. It was not a problem for us. Yes, there were people smoking, but it was not overwhelming anywhere. I have only one complaint. The drink policy by the pool was ridiculous! We booked this resort knowing it did not have a swim up bar. HOWEVER – the Maya is advertised as having one so we figured we’d take a walk there and visit it. That swim up bar no longer exists. We were disappointed. So, to take a drink NEAR the pool at the Azteca is a no-no. I understand you don’t want drinks spilled in the pool all day, but, we were not even allowed to sit outside with our feet in and have a drink. We were told once the closest you could get to the pool with a drink is one of the lounge chairs... No chance of that happening since I already mentioned they were all snapped up early. Despite that, I would recommend this resort and go again should the opportunity arise.

Great Beach Area!

The beach and pool area were fantastic. The rooms were decent. Fairly nice shower with good water pressure. Beds weren't real comfortable. And the A/C didn't feel like it pulled any of the humidity out of the room, which made the sheets feel gross and hard to sleep on. Everyone in our group struggled with the food options. There were plenty of choices, but none of it looked or tasted very good. Staff was friendly and did an excellent job keeping the resort well kept and the guests entertained. Other than the bathrooms being a little ways from the beach, I'd say the beach area (which had plenty of beach chairs) was the best part of the resort. Overall, we had a nice time and enjoyed the resort.
