Simple and relaxing
Overall, I had a great time there. Not overcrowded which is good, no lines at all.Good food and drinks, clean beaches, friendly stuff. There were many families and older couples in the hotel. I am 25 my friend is 26 was a little bit boring for us. There is no clubs or lounges in the resort. But there is one nice lounge 5 mins away from the resort. It’s safe though, but you have to pay there....after 12 am our resort was like a ghost town. but during the day we had a lot of fun by the pool. Or I could go and sleep to the beach. And it’s really affordable for students.
Everything was excellent but I would recommend the maid service vac. the tile floors in the rooms instead of moping due to sand seems to always be on the floor and winds up on your feet when you walk barefoot. Otherwise Top Rate resort and service..Everyone very kind and friendly.
Didn’t give it 5, only because we had a bit of a problem in our bathroom and room with mosquitoes. Lots of them, that bit us everywhere during the night. It does not seem that anyone else had the same problem. At first we did not complains, but by day 3, we needed to say something so we could sleep. They offered to change our room, but really we just just wanted them to fumigate. They did, and that seemed to help a lot.
The food was good, but I have celiac, and there not many options. But the majority of the food, even though I could not eat it looked delicious, and my friend said the same.
The staff were wonderful, very friendly, very eager to help.
I think we loved the pool the best. I have never been to an all inclusive before. The drinks seemed a little small to me, but others who were veteran guests, said that the smaller drinks made the resort better, because you could enjoy yourself longer. I saw the wisdom in that, as I never really had a weak drink.
We had a chance to drive by other resorts, and this one looked like of the best. The room looked freshly painted and it was clean. We had a junior suite, which was HUGE. But there was no furniture in which to store clothes, like a dresser.
The free areas for WiFi were not useful at all, but in the end, I was grateful for the break from the internet.
The specialty restaurants provided a nice break from the buffet. But the gluten free options were limited. They did offer gluten free bread throughout, which I thought was a plus. And staff truly did try to learn about what was gluten free and what was not. I am sure in time this will improve. And it was not so bad to keep me from returning to the resort. Everyone who stayed there that we met really seemed to be having a great time.

What an experience
I had the best time at VH Gran Ventana and I can't wait to come back. The Beach was just amazing and the employees were beyond the best. Puerto Plata is a beautiful place. The food was delicious and every night at dinner were different options. I loved the warm feel of the VH and the night atmosphere. Make sure to book an excursion as I did and had the best time. I would only suggest a club section and DJ for get down purposes. Other than that GREAT VACAY.

Upon searching on the internet, there was no information found regarding any recent renovations at the resort.
MariaCC
We jsut returned last week and they have upgraded to card keys in all the rooms and updates have begun in the building closer to hemingways ans coco bangos, we stayed in the catalina building and our room was not upgraded yet but didnt spoil our time since we are there for vacation how often are you in your room anyway?? The resorts grounds are kept very nice and rack beach every morning.
therains
This is the first time we stayed at the Gran Ventana, so we can't say if the rooms have been renovated. The rooms were small, but clean and just fine.
SusanSails
I first visited this resort 26 years ago and it has been exceptionally well maintained during that time. While the furnishings and rooms are certainly dated, they indeed have been refreshed and are clean and comfortable. The beds, unfortunately, are very hard.

No, but they were not in too bad shape.

how far from airport and puerto plata9 answers

Puerto Plata itself from the Puerto Plata Airport is about 30 minutes, however, this can be dependant upon traffic and weather. To get an idea how far this resort is from the airport, you can contact the resort directly at https://www.granventanahotel.com/. Thank you.
RobinCC
15 minutes. Very close to the airport
Pathrose
I would say 25 to 35 minutes.
Jesy
It was about a 10- 15 minute ride from the airport to the resort.
beachlovinglady
20 min by taxi- close
RonNicole
About a 20 minute drive in the shuttle from the airport at Puerto Plata to the resort. I'm not sure how far from the resort to the city of Puerto Plata, I'm pretty sure you can arrange to go there for a shopping trip while you're at the resort.
TinFoilMan
not sure about Puerto Plata as we did not go there but about 15 minutes from the airport (and someone said about 20 minutes from the city).

About 45 mins on the amstar bus

Jet ski rental cost?5 answers
Are the jet ski's on site?
4 years, 53 months ago
Brock
Most resorts throughout the Caribbean and Mexico have tour companies on site in which excursions can be purchased. For further information regarding jet ski rentals, we do suggest contacting the resort directly as they would be best to assist you. The toll free telephone number from the resort's website to contact them directly is #1-866-376-7831.
MariaCC
not on site but just down the beach where they also have parasailing, windsurfing, banana boating and water skiing. Thing the jet skis were $70 for 30 minutes.
6kids
Yes
mm70
They have one jet ski which rents for 75 for half hour. We rented it and we're told 2 people could ride together however when we got there they said too much weight and only one could ride. Between us we weigh a total 300 lbs and have always ridden together in other places.
MamaR
They are just down the beach about 300 yards. But they are EXPENSIVE, about $50 fora half hour. And there is no one to watch your valuables.

Does the all-inclusive package truly include all meals?10 answers
The description says all meals, snacks, and beverages are included, but then I've read something about only being allowed three dinner reservations. Could someone clarify? Thank you!
4 years, 51 months ago
Lauren
The all inclusive package at this resort includes drinks, meals, and alcoholic beverages, but some restrictions do apply when dining. Please contact the resort directly at 1 809-320-2111, for the most up to date information on what the restrictions are.
BethCC
There are3 specialty restuarants- make your reservations when you arrive. There is a buffet style main restaurant for all other meals- always plenty of seats and food choices.
RocknRollRick
Yes, it is all meals included. The buffet is always open. The Ala carte restaurants only allow 1 reservation per 7 week stay. They have 3 of them so the other 4 days you have to eat at the buffet.
RNAngel
There is a buffet available for three meals a day. You can always eat there. There is a grill by the beach that you could always get lunch or snacks at up until 5:00 or 6:00.
There are what they call "a la carte" restaurants on the grounds and you do need to make a reservation for these. We ate at one of the Italian places and really liked it.
RVT1000CC
Yes all meals are included and all drinks.
3musketeers
There are 3 reservations for the a la carte restaurants per week. The rest of the meals are at the buffet, which is better than most cruise ship buffets I have had!
FloridaFlyingJim
The plan does include all meals, but you may be limited to the number of reservations you can make at the specialty restaurants - you can always eat at the main restaurant (buffet) without reservations.
Voltaire42
Buffet available at all other times but not good.
MamaR
You can always eat at the buffet (which has a good selection of food including a made to order pasta station).
But yes, you can only make three reservations for the specialty restaurants per week.
Drinks and snacks are included. There is plenty to eat!
GregandKee
they are both true. The specialty restaurants only allow three reservations per week, in which the week starts on Sunday. The regular buffet restaurant has all three meals, plus there are snack areas at the specialty restaurant areas.

I'm going to be coming here for spring break with my friends and whether or not the bars are accessible is a huge deal breaker for us.
4 years, 51 months ago
Mad
The all inclusive package at this resort includes all meals, snacks, and domestic beverages, including alcohol.
BethCC
Don't come here for spring break, the crowd isn't very appealing and the one bar within the resort campus, Coco Bongo was dead empty with a few scary locals hanging outside.
MMiko
Yes, all drinks included.
RocknRollRick
Yes they have 3 bars on the property that are included (high end products cost extra). There is also a Cocobongo's Club just short walk from hotel.
Morrisx2
Yes all alcohol is included. Keep in mind- its all well alcohol. So you won't be getting Jack Daniel's!
RNAngel
YES! Remember that the employees do not make much. A tip of a dollar or so is very much appreciated!
FloridaFlyingJim
Yes domestic beer, wine, and spirits (and some international) are included, but not top shelf variety.
Voltaire42
It does include drinks, but be warned! They are all bottom shelf, in other words terrible hangovers. If you get mixed drinks they will only splash the booze, so don't be shy and ask them for half booze, half sugary mix etc...It's all inclusive so they have to do this for you, however will try to get away with as little alcohol as possible to save money.
MaryMLou
You can whatever you want from the bar at no cost. All drinks, except premium liquors are included. Be advised resort crowd is probably late 50's mid 60's.

The beach is beautiful, but lots of venders.

The beaches are okay. The water is a beautiful turquoise color. There were a lot of Sea Serpents close to shore. The sand is not white sand.
RNAngel
To meny vindors on the beach
3musketeers
The beach has a fine, soft sand with good wading and snorkeling. The close in reef keeps the surf down to almost nothing.
FloridaFlyingJim
The beach was beautiful, VH Gran Ventana has a large portion of the beach so there were plenty of umbrellas and chairs - you never felt like you were on top of anyone. The water was nice and fairly calm, there were a few small coral reefs right off shore were you could snorkel and see some fish. Water was very clear.
GBoots
I didn't care for the beach. Too many vendors.

How was the nightlife on the resort and/or nearby towns?7 answers
4 years, 48 months ago
vacagirl
This resort is located right in the middle of the Playa Dorada complex, so getting to nightclubs is fast and easy.
BethCC
I would have liked the intertainment to start at 8;30 insted of 9;30
3musketeers
The nightlife at the resort was ok, they had different games or events each night - bingo, karoke, live band. It is more of a relaxing/family type resort so there weren't any crazy parties or night time activities past 11pm. Not sure about the nearby towns as we never left the resort
GBoots
They have 1 night club. I didn't go but heard it was nice. Other than that nothing in the resort are. Not for a party seeker
Meeky
The resort had a nightly show that started at 9:30pm and ended around 10:30pm. Everything shut down by 11pm.
There is a nightclub within walking distance and only really came alive around 1am. We went around midnight and it was dead and we left after hanging around for about an hour. There is a door charge for men only.
We'd spoken to some teenagers that had gone and said they had fun there. Wasn't our experience though.
WesternNY
The nightlife on the resort is pretty non existent. There is a small club about 1 minute walk away that gets pretty packed on weekends

Can't remember the exact times but we had breakfast some days as early as 7:30am. I think it went to about 10am and lunch started at Noon - 3pm. There was the grill open between 3pm-5pm and dinner started at 630pm - 9:30pm.
Bars opened at 10am - 11pm.
We always managed to find food to eat and were never hungry but the food wasn't always the best.

besides the regular volleyball, etc. are there games or is it too quiet [ drinking games etc.]
3 years, 46 months ago
donna
I just returned from my trip and there are other activities besides volleyball. They had water aerobics, dance lessons, water balloon fight in the pool, karaoke, bingo, and a show every evening, just to mention a few. Very entertaining and friendly staff.
Meeski1
There are two pool tables, a tired gym, and a volleyball net in the pool. The event staff tried hard, but it was a huge dud.
Athletica04
They have games & shows daily. Not quiet at all.
TashaD
There are daily organized pool games arranged. We didn't participate in them as they were mainly geared or at least mainly played by teenagers (15-18 years old).
WesternNY
It was borderline too quiet. They had 1-2 drinking games during my 1 week stay. They also only seemed to really play pool side music before/during aqua aerobics
EReyes89
Not much during day hours, not even music on beach
MamaR
Shhh. Very quiet around pool and beach area. Didn't see any drinking games. They do have some activities planned but nothing real exciting.

what is the area that has the best clean beaches - no seaweed
2 years, 31 months ago
Washington DC
Seaweed is something any resort tries to keep clean of their beaches. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
TimCC
We didn't see any here when we went in March 2014.
zwimchix
There was seaweed all over there were small spots that didnt have it but most of it was all over the water.
Martyna
There is seaweed on all beaches in Puerto Plata. It is not like the beach is covered with seaweed. Generally the resorts do make an effort to clean up area. If you get up early enough in the morning, around 6:00AM, you can probably throw your towel on a beach chair under an umbrella at the pool or the beach, otherwise, got to roast in the sun. Although a lot of people put their towels on the chairs at night. Not fair but reality.

it is a natural beach but they put in rocks it seemed to keep the waves tame. There is fish and snorkeling to see, but nothing like Cozumel or other top destinations to snorkel from. I never saw any coral right off the beach either.

Not really...people do but I would book an excursion away from the hotel. The waters can be rough and there is not a reef that I saw.
Beaudry32
natural beach, I saw some snorkeling but didn't try myself.

Honestly we did a vip tour that u can sign up for that's $160 per person or u can do a speed boat for $95 its worth paying more because they give u breakfast and lunch on the boat and beach after ur done the speed boat just takes you to the island. But at the resort there was nothing to see thats worth it.
