issues with beach

The beach area was unusable due to excessive seaweed and brown water. We needed to pay for taxi services to get us to a beach we could swim in. No offer for free shuttle service was provided to us.

Great location!!

We booked for our anniversary about 3 weeks in advance for a quick 5 day / 4 night getaway. The time flew by in Barbados and we couldn't believe it was already time to leave! Turtle Beach Resort itself was nice but very small compared to all the other Caribbean island resorts we've been to. As a result, the pools were smaller, less bars and restaurants, and less shopping options on the resort. The plus side of this was that it was much less crowded and easy to find covered chairs at the beach and pools, easy to get reservations for dining, and quick service at the bars. Because there were less people at the resort when we got there, we also got a free upgrade to a full ocean view suite. It's also a very couple and family-oriented resort, so don't go there for late-night partying. There's entertainment daily but usually wraps up at 10 pm and hrs close by 12:30. The rooms are nice and clean with very comfortable beds and easy to control AC units which worked very well, were quiet, and kept the rooms nice and cool. The pools were nice and the beach was beautiful; however, the ocean was very rough and not as clear blue as we discovered on other parts of the island. The food was decent, as we found some things quite good and other things just meh. But, the service was good at all restaurants and bars and overall we found the entire staff to be quite welcoming and friendly. The location was our favorite part and of this resort. It is located close to the airport so only about 20 minutes driving time. It's just feet from St. Lawrence Gap, which is a long narrow street with several resorts on it that has numerous bars and restaurants, along with a few shops. Downtown Bridgetown is only about 20 minutes away also, but between the resort and there is the amazing Carlisle Bay beach. We read about it online and decided to take a taxi there ($30 BDS / $15 US) which is TOTALLY WORTH IT! This beach is apparently ranked #4 in the world and I wouldn't argue with that at all. It's absolutely gorgeous with sugary white sand and crystal clear turquoise water. We went to the section of the beach in front a of a small blue restaurant / bar called "Lobster Alive". Men on the beach there will set you up with 2 chairs and an umbrella for $15 US, but you'll also get 3 vouchers free coconut runs drinks or soda at the bar, access to their wi-fi which works well on the beach, and access to their bathrooms / showers for the entire day. People will come up to you on the beach and try to sell you jewelry or art but they are very friendly and not pushy about it at all. People will also offer you jet-ski rentals, snorkeling boat trips, etc. We took up an offer for a 1 hour trip on a snorkeling boat. The going rate at the time was $40 US per person for the hour, but we easily negotiated that down to $40 total for both of us! Money well spent as they took us on a short ride off the beach to a ship wreck where we snorkeled for about 20 minutes and saw loads of beautiful fish and then we hopped back on the boat and another short ride had us at a location to swim / snorkel with sea turtles for another 20 mins or so. We basically took a taxi to Carlisle, had chairs / umbrella for the day, 3 rum drinks, and took a short snorkeling excursion all for $85, which is waaayy cheaper than it would've been to book an excursion through a vendor or the hotel. Trust me, get off the resort and go do it because it's money well spent and an amazing beach. We felt safe just walking around the island during the day and taking taxis as everyone on the island is very friendly and helpful. Barbados is a beautiful place and we would definitely return.

What's to Love

The easy walk to St. Lawrence Gap is one of our favorite features of Turtle Beach Hotel. Barbados nightlife is just a hop, skip and a jump away.

What We'd Change

The dress code at Asiagos might be a little too fancy for the more casual traveler. Just be sure to pack some shoes other than flip-flops.

Why You Should Go

If you can, make your trip during turtle-nesting season, April to November. It's an amazing chance to see endangered sea life.

Hotel Description

Turtle Beach Resort: Enjoy A Premium Barbados Hotel with Ocean Wildlife on the Side

The stretch of Barbados' South Coast that is home to Turtle Beach Resort isn't called "Turtle Beach" for nothin'. It's actually a sea-turtle nesting ground from April through November, and lucky December visitors just might catch a glimpse of a hatchling as it scrambles toward the sea.

The wildlife, though, is only the first draw of Turtle Beach Resort in Barbados. All inclusive packages feature the hotel's three restaurants, two freshwater swimming pools and a boat-load of water sports. Try your hand at windsurfing, or watch for tropical fish from a kayak or canoe. When you're ready to explore the surrounding town of Dover, make the three-minute walk to St. Lawrence Gap, or "The Gap" as locals like to call it, a hub of shops and vibrant nightlife.

An island vibe in a natural setting awaits you at Turtle Beach Resort. Barbados' South Coast beach seems laid out just for your viewing pleasure from the private balcony of your artfully decorated room. When you arrive at the hotel, the open-air lobby welcomes you with fresh ocean breezes and a laid-back atmosphere. Each of the rooms is a suite, providing you with all the creature comforts of home. But you're not at home, you're on a Caribbean vacation, complete with beach-concierge service bringing you fresh fruit and afternoon tea. And when it's time for dinner, sample fine dining at Asiagos, the highest-rated Italian restaurant in all of Barbados.

Bringing a handful of kids along? Turtle Beach Resort's Flying Fish Kids' Club is the perfect place for them to hang out and play beach cricket, table tennis and Nintendo Wii. Even "too-cool-for-school" teenagers like the foosball setup and pool table. And with the crackle of Caribbean energy in the air, those who join in the Kids' Club's educational and cultural activities will be too absorbed by their island surroundings to even realize they are learning. Meanwhile, it's playtime for the grownups as they relax in the whirlpool or embark on a rum distillery tour.
