Definitely not the 4 star we signed up for

Do you like waiting in lines? Do you like screaming kids and their ambivalent parents who couldn't care less? Are you ready to spend your hard-earned free time in a place that is so kid friendly it's borderline anti-adult? Do you like to go to bed before 10pm since there's not much else to do? Are you great at reserving poolside AND beach chairs then disappearing for hours at a time without the staff doing anything about it? Then Sunscape is the perfect resort for you! This is NOT a 4* resort and would hover around a 2.5* on a good day. PROs: -Proximity to airport -Gorgeous view from the upper floors of the condo tower -Most staff very friendly -Quick cab ride to Malecon/boardwalk -VERY kid friendly, if that's your thing (it's not mine) CONs: -Lines. Everywhere. I'm pretty sure we spent 20% of our time waiting for something while on this vacation, from checking in to breakfast to the poolside grill situation to getting a drink at the bar to attempting (twice!) the Italian place but giving up after 90 minutes to trying to get some money exchanged -Operational issues a go-go in the restaurants; constantly asking for things like silverware, salt and pepper, cream for the coffee, often being ignored for stretches of time (twice including the entire time; I served myself food and finished it before anyone said hello or asked if I needed something to drink). -No free wifi to speak of -Drinks were... well, not very good. The mixers were some of the worst I've had, no matter what drink I ordered. The red wine was seriously bad. The saving grace? The 'champagne', oddly enough. Definitely not bad. -Evening entertainment was... okay. Typically started around 830pm and wrapped by 10pm. They were somewhat well attended, which was a stark contrast to the ONE night of karaoke that absolutely packed the lobby bar. Everyone was having a fantastic time and wanted to keep the night going but it was shut off promptly at 10pm (in favor of a lovely but way too chill spanish music duo) and definitely killed the vibe. If there's anything I can tell you about vacation people, it's that they LOVE their karaoke and will do it for hours and hours (and hopefully tip the bar staff) all night long. -There are definitely enough pool chairs, but the hotel doesn't enforce it's 'only leave for one hour' policy like it needs to, so all the seats will be taken by 9am even though there are not very many people out. -It's just loud, all the time. Music blaring, entertainment staff shouting, kids screaming, the frequent band on the beach with the tuba and snare drum, lifeguard whistles blowing, etc. It's not a party spot at all but it's definitely not a relaxing place. -There's no adults-only anything; they set up kids-only pool toys in the deep end of the pool, they encourage games that cater to kids, there's a kids club and kids parade that happens twice a day that apparently requires deafening music including repeats of Baby Shark, kids are running and screaming literally everywhere, kids are seated at the swim up bar and ordering complicated frozen virgin drinks (and often treating the staff like servants, which is AWFUL)... this place is so kid-friendly that it's actually anti-adult. Was this the worst all inclusive we've been to? Nope. Would we recommend this resort to others? Nope. Will we be back? Oh definitely nope. We work really hard and value our time off (and money earned) together and consider a week in Mexico a total treat, but this definitely wasn't the 4* experience we were looking forward to. I wish we could get a do-over.

Exactly what we expected and needed:)

We had a very nice time, no complains. This is not a luxury-top-of-the-line resort, but it fulfilled our expectations and then some. Food is ok, we’ll-managed, fruit, vegetables and breads were fresh. Lots of starchy and saucy options, enough healthy options too, if you’re not too picky. Don’t expect exotic fruits, lobster or really nice steaks. Poolside options could be more varied, but there were always burgers, hotdogs, potato chips and nachos with plenty of toppings. Don’t expect fancy liquor either, but you’ll see brands you know, and personally I thought the white wine and the champagne were nice. If drinking is important, won’t be disappointed, waiters and bartenders are always at hand and very friendly. The coffee place is good, well-crafted drinks and always something sweet to go with it (cookies, banana bread, fresh plain donuts). The Italian restaurant is nice too, but getting a table might be an issue; could use some kind of reservation system. Loved the kids (explorers) club! They’re nicely staffed. Fer, Dayana and Sara took great care of my little ones. Programs were fun and on time. Facilities are modern and spotless. Kiddos can have lunch and dinner with them, just need to plan to take them back for an hour or two in the afternoon (often called “bath time”). The entertainment activities for adults and families were nice too. Very friendly and high-energy. The nightly show is not to be missed. We especially enjoyed the magician and the modern dancers. Our room was always clean. Very spacious. Pillows could be better, but again this is not a luxury resort. The elevator and stairs areas could use some attention and refinishing though. Bathrooms throughout the resort were also clean and well-stocked.

Great vacation spot!

The beach was swim-able, the pool was nice! The service was what made the stay exceptional!!! They are beginning to remodel the resort so I anticipate amazing quality rooms coming!! Sad thing... no fresh fruit for drinks :( it was allllll sugar syrup. We could drink a whole lot because the sugar made us sick quickly

Old Beds lacking back support!!

This was a wonderful resort with the exception of the fact that we had asked for a King bed and were given two full size beds. We asked for them to provide the king size bed but they said they were not available. The beds were absolutely awful. Poor quality, sagging in the middle with no back support at all. Painful back each morning. However, the food was outstanding, the pool excellent and the staff were friendly.

What's to Love

Family-friendly check-in Hollywood style - red carpet stairs and yummy welcome treats.

Resort passports that send the kids on their own adventure.

With the Sierra Madres & Banderas Bay as the resort's backdrop, your selfies are going to break the Internet (hey, they might!)

Spa luxuries like a Chocolate Body Wrap or a blowout that will make your hair shine.

Golden sandy beaches where you can kayak, windsurf or kick back while the kids make sand castles.

The kids will love the waterslide at the pool!

The Marina Vallarta Golf Club is within walking distance to the resort. Hopefully you won't be yelling "Fore!" too much!

What We'd Change

Booking a Sun Club room would have given us a few more perks that we would've liked, especially room service at night. The kids were completely worn out from all the fun in the sun, and ordering in would have been a treat! Luckily, the restaurant let us take food to-go!

Why You Should Go

You'll have a drink in your hand in no time since it's only 10 minutes from the airport.

El Malecon is nearby with shops, restaurants/bars, art, & clowns performing tricks. (not the scary kind).

Surfs up at the Punta Mita surfing school where the whole family can take on the waves.

You can rent a boat and check out the famous Love Island at the Marietas.

Historical San Sebastian is a short drive away.

Swimming with the dolphins is a must and in the right season, the whale watching will blow your mind.
