Puerto Vallarta Vacation at Sunscape

I was apprehensive about this resort after reading so many negative reviews, especially about the food being so terrible. I am an avid cook, and rest assured, there are plenty of delicious food options here! Same with the drinks. The bartenders were super friendly and fun. All tips were graciously and sincerely appreciated. This resort was spotlessly clean. The beach was cleared of debris every morning. The staff absolutely bent over backwards to ensure guests were happy. It is a small resort, with fewer amenities, and definitely fewer rooms. Thus, fewer PEOPLE! Check-in and check-out were easy and efficient. The daily entertainment and activities were fun. The areas needing improvement were few, and with just a little more effort, this could be a really wonderful place to come to. Our suggestions are as follows: better liquor for the cocktails...there was NO bourbon offered, more diligence needed in restocking rooms with the refrigerator, towels and toiletries, the Italian restaurant was not "elegant". There should have been a wine menu, (even if there was an up charge), service was lacking, and the risotto was undercooked each time I ate there. We didn't understand why the waiter wanted to know what we wanted for dessert when they began to take our orders each meal. The food overall was good, with excellent grouper and divine pizza! Again, a little attention to detail would go a long way here as well. We would return to this resort. Our room was comfortable. The location is excellent. We never felt unsafe. The in-house sales people were persistent, but not pushy for the timeshare sales. As 60+ year old world travelers, we would recommend this resort!

Average trip for relaxing

Our trip was great for laying under the umbrella at the resort and relaxing; however the Ocean and beach was rocky. There is a constant stream of walking sales people all day long unfortunately. There was constantly saving of pool/beach chairs. A sun club upgrade is a must for an umbrella beach chair. The service of drinks on the beach relaxing is hit and miss. The people were very nice and do work hard; however the beach is what we go for and this one was not for us. The view from the room was nice but the elevators are small and sticky hot.

Our first time in Peurto Vallarta

Ok, so let me first start by giving you a little insight as to what kind of people we are, that will help you see where I'm coming from. We are country folks who love going to the beach for vacation. We enjoy fun in the sun, and like to relax with peace and quite. Upon arriving in PV, the vulchers at the airport trying to suck you into buying an excursion from them was our first encounter. We have traveled to many places and I think this was the worst. If you have your travel arrangements to and from the airport, ignore anyone inside and get to the curb and find your representative. Or cab. The ones inside are trying to make a buck. Enough about that. On to the resort, upon arrival we were immediately greeted by super nice bell man who took our bags and directed us to the 5th floor where we would be checked in since we upgraded to the Sun Club. Great choice!! Carmen at the check in was very helpful and friendly, she did try to talk us into a morning greeting, however, again is was a time share type meeting we were not interested in. Now, heres the beginning of our stay at Sun Scape, first off as usual, were told our room was not ready, ok no problem, we went down to the buffet and had some lunch came back to find one of our rooms was ready. Good enough. A few mins later the other room was available. Nice comfy rooms with updated bathrooms and the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in on vacation. The food was fabulous. We did not have a bad meal. All the staff was rather friendly, however, one thing we were disappointed about, our kids would sometimes eat by themselves, ages 15 and 12, the waiters would not wait on them or ask them for drinks. We had dinner a couple nights at the Italian restaurant and it was remarkable!!! The hostess was the most friendly welcoming lady we had met. She seated us, offered to take pictures and made sure we had everything we needed. I highly recommend eating there. On to the beach, not so nice...the sand was not the sugar white sand that I was expecting, but ok, it was clean. Chairs on the beach were plentiful. The pool, there is only one pool, besides the very small kiddie pool, and if you want a chair by the pool, you better be down there by 10:00 am at the latest, otherwise all the locals grab those chairs. They sell day passes to locals and this resort is very very crowded with locals. Lots of kids. I will say all the children were very well behaved. Wayyyyyy to many people for the size of this resort. For that reason, I will never go back. We did take a taxi into town one day and the shopping was great. Everyone is very friendly and I felt very safe. My daughter and I went for a massage on the beach and it was AMAZING!!! The best massage I have ever had. All the activity directors were awesome! The drinks were fine. The music around the pool starts blaring about 10 am and stays on until early afternoon, doesn't leave much for relaxing. If you want a quiet relaxing getaway, this is not your place. If you're taking children, its a ok place. Our kids seemed to enjoy it. Wi-Fi worked great. The housekeeping staff were wonderful. Always stocked our fridge with soda and beer. I hope this review helps in your decision making.

Worst purchase ever

I do not reccommend Sunscape resort to anyone. Please do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. We’ve traveled to all inclusive resorts in Mexico a lot of time and this was by far the worst experience. The food is VERY bad. We left the resort and ate out everyday which ended up costing us more money. We had upgraded to “sunclub” which provides better alcohol but they were only open till 9 pm so you were stuck with the bast stuff for the rest of the night. We were told we would be getting $200 in resort coupons but when we arrived in PV we found out that they don’t accept the coupons on sunscape, we could only use it at another resort called secrets which was about 10 min away. Everyday we were forced to go to the secrets resort to sit through a “30 minute” presentation for their unlimited vacation club which they say isn’t a timeshare but that’s a lie. We went to Puerto Vallarta to relax but we weren’t able to. The Ac in our room was leaking and was never fixed. Overall, our experience was horrible. Won’t be returning.

What's to Love

Family-friendly check-in Hollywood style - red carpet stairs and yummy welcome treats.

Resort passports that send the kids on their own adventure.

With the Sierra Madres & Banderas Bay as the resort's backdrop, your selfies are going to break the Internet (hey, they might!)

Spa luxuries like a Chocolate Body Wrap or a blowout that will make your hair shine.

Golden sandy beaches where you can kayak, windsurf or kick back while the kids make sand castles.

The kids will love the waterslide at the pool!

The Marina Vallarta Golf Club is within walking distance to the resort. Hopefully you won't be yelling "Fore!" too much!

What We'd Change

Booking a Sun Club room would have given us a few more perks that we would've liked, especially room service at night. The kids were completely worn out from all the fun in the sun, and ordering in would have been a treat! Luckily, the restaurant let us take food to-go!

Why You Should Go

You'll have a drink in your hand in no time since it's only 10 minutes from the airport.

El Malecon is nearby with shops, restaurants/bars, art, & clowns performing tricks. (not the scary kind).

Surfs up at the Punta Mita surfing school where the whole family can take on the waves.

You can rent a boat and check out the famous Love Island at the Marietas.

Historical San Sebastian is a short drive away.

Swimming with the dolphins is a must and in the right season, the whale watching will blow your mind.
